Can’t Get Enough Of The Union Titans 28-7 3A Semifinals Win Over The Lakes Lancers?

Titans Senior #9 Tyler Code jumps high in the Tacoma Dome air following Derek Adams 47 yard fumble return in the third quarter of Union's 28-7 WIAA 3A Semifinals win over the Lakes Lancers Friday night.
For those of you who just can’t get enough of Titans football here are a few links that will make your day.
As always www.gshlfootball.com has a highlight video of the game with all the big plays from Union’s win. From powering scoring runs by Blake Russell and Zak Browning to 47 yard fumble returns for go ahead touchdowns and so many defensive stops I lost count, the video below has all the games highlights packed into 10 minutes.
If you need even more than that, you can always head over to www.carlclick.com and listen to the archive radio feed from last nights game. Carl does a wonderful job with the play-by-play and you might even find some nice coupons on his site.
Finally, for now, Michael H found the full game, without audio, only Carl Click has audio of the game, from Your Sports Network.
The game will also be available to Comcast Digital Cable subscribers in their On Demand section.
A big THANK YOU needs to go out to Michael H for his fabulous job of LIVE Twitter updates during the game.
Michael did such a great job of keeping up with every play last night. The two teams were not using much of the play clock between each play, and just keep running play after play. Michael not only keep up with every play, he captured the emotion of the entire game as well.
Look for more LIVE Twitter updates Saturday at 4pm from the Tacoma Dome as the Union Titans take on the winner of the Bellevue/Capital game Monday.

Union Titans Football Advance To 3A Championship Game With 28-7 Win Over Lakes

Titans Junior RB Blake Russell scores from 12 yards out to give Union the 7-0 lead in the second quarter.
The Union Titans are not done playing.
Union knocked off #3 Lakes 28-7 Friday night at the Tacoma Dome to advance to the Finals of the WIAA 3A.
Union Junior RB Blake Russell rushed for 128 yards and a pair of 12 yard rushing touchdowns to lead the young Titans to the finals.
Union took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter following Russell’s first touchdown. Junior QB Brandon Weller executed a perfect option play waiting until the last possible second to pitch the ball allowing Russell to just get past the Lakes defender.
With just over 1 minute in the half the speedy Lancers struck, tying the game at 7-7 when Lakes Junior QB #11 Dalton Gervais hit Junior WR #80 John Goldwire on a 62 yard pass.
Lakes took the ball to start the half, and on the opening play Gervais hit Junior WR #2 Jamaal Kearse for a 37 yard pass and a Lancers first down. The Lancers would not get another first down the rest of the night.
Two players later Gervias dropped back to pass when Union Senior LB #36 Ryan Maddox came flying off the outside and blindsided the unexpected Lakes quarterback forcing him to fumble the ball. Fellow Senior linebacker Derek Adams had also crashed in on the play and gladly picked up the bouncing football on the run ala Mitch Saylor and cruised 47 yards for the go ahead (14-7) and would be winning score.
Sophomore fullback Zak Browning put the Lancers on the ropes later in the third quarter following his 23 yard burst up the middle giving the Titans a 21-7 lead.
Russell, for good measure capped off the magical night with his second 12 yard run right up the middle of the Lakes defense breaking tackles all the way.
Union will now play the winner of Monday’s Bellevue/Capital game on Saturday at 4 pm back at the Tacoma Dome.
For those of you with Comcast digital cable, the game “should” be on Comcast Ondemand.

The votes are in, and the coaches have spoken.
While The Union Titans rolled to an undefeated 9-0 regular season and are currently 12-0 as they prepare for Friday’s WIAA 3A semifinal game vs. Lakes, Columbia River and Camas were not too far behind.
Remember entering the final week of the season Union had not clinched the 3A GSHL title yet. Both Columbia River and Camas had there shot at a split league champ. This being said, Union did win the championship as Columbia River and Cams finished 2-3 respectively.
So, you ask where I am going with this?
The 2008 3A GSHL all-league team was also let by Union, but just like in the season, Columbia River and Camas were right on their heals.
Union led the way with 11 first team players while Columbia River and Camas each had 6. The Titans had 5 more players on the second team, while the Chieftains added 4 and the Papermakesrs added 5.
Prairie, Fort Vancouver and Hudson’s Bay added their share of talent to the teams as well. The Falcons had 7 players on the two teams, while the Trappers and Eagles each added 4.
Union Head Coach Cale Piland was voted as the 2008 Coach of the Year.
Union Junior LB Taylor Nelson was voted Defensive player of the year while fellow Titan Junior WR Mitch Saylor voted Offensive player of the year.

All You NEED To Know About The Lakes Lancers
Lakes Lancers Highlights [youtube:http://www.youtube.com?v=X-Sf_rEgT-o 280 230] vs. Eastside Catholic 18-14[youtube:http://www.youtube.com?v=zOoOLJBmysg 280 230] vs O’Dea 21-16[youtube:http://www.youtube.com?v=tjWmN1_1hnQ 280 230] vs. Olympic 44-7 [youtube:http://www.youtube.com?v=h8h9cli1q20 280 230] vs Sumner 83-0 Friday evening, 7 pm at The Tacoma Dome, the 2008 3A GSHL Champion #4 Union Titans (12-0) will face the 3A South Puget Sound League Champion #3 Lakes Lancers (12-0) in the WIAA state semifinals.
So, just who are the Lakes Lancers?
Lakes High School is located in Lakewood, WA on the west side of I-5 just north of Fort Lewis.
The Lakes Lancers are coached by Dave Miller and finished as 3A South Puget Sound League Champions with an 8-0 league record and are currently 12-0 overall. Dave Miller was voted as the SPSL 3A Coach of the Year for 2008.
Lakes led the way in the SPSL All-League team this season.
- 5 first team offensive players
- 6 first team defensive players
- 2 second team offensive players
- 3 second team defensive players
- 6 Honorable Mention
Lakes qualified for the state playoffs with a 44-7 win over Olympic and then defeated #8 O’Dea 21-16 in the first round of state. The Lancers defeated #5 Eastside Catholic 18-14 Friday night to advance to Friday’s Semifinals match-up with the Titans.
“Absolutely, we knew we would be here. This junior class is amazing and the seniors have stepped up.” Lakes QB Dalton Gervais
Like Union, the Lancers are a young team. The Lakes team of ’07 was the team everyone was picking to win a state championship. They did start out 10-0, however they lost in the first round to eventual champ Skyline. This year the Lancers only returned 3 starters and were not predicted to equal last year’s team by completing an undefeated regular season. The Lancers of ’08 not only matched the ’07 Lancers but are 2 games deeper in the state playoffs.
The Lancers like to run the ball, a lot. The running back tandem of #25 Teddy Cotton (First Team All SPSL) and #20 Willis Wilson (Second Team All SPSL) have caused problems for Lakes opponents all season. Cotton rushed for 154 yards on 25 carries last week in the Lancers 18-14 win over Eastside Catholic. While each back ran for over 100 yards two weeks ago in their 44-7 win over Olympic. In the Lancers 21-16 first round win over O’Dea, Wilson rushed 20 times for 181 yards and Cotton had 92 yards on 16 carries.
“They’re so fast… We couldn’t eliminate the big plays.” Eastside Catholic Head Coach Bill Marsh
3 of the 5 Lakes offensive linemen were voted to either the first or second all-league team. Sione Potoa’e and Jordan Clark were voted first team, and Tuiasosopo Niusula was voted on the second team. Throw in TE Darius Waters as another first team selection and you can see why the Lancers have been so tough to slow down.
“That’s our bread and butter right there… It’s a simple dive play; nothing special.” Lakes Head Coach Dave Miller
Sione Potoa’e was voted as the Offensive Line Player of the Year while fellow lineman Tuiasosopo Niusula was voted as the Defensive Line Player of the Year.
Lakes WR #2 Jamaal Kearse (first team all-league) is also a talented athlete and QB #11 Dalton Gervais (Honorable Mention) has connected several times this season with Kearse for scores. They hooked up 3 times in the Lancers 44-7 preliminary round win over Olympic alone. Teams cannot stack the box and try to stop Cotton and Wilson, because if they do, Gervais will just chuck it deep to Kearse.
“They were creeping on us so we went deep.” Lakes QB Dalton Gervais
On defense, linebackers Travis Johnson and Jordan Patterson as well as DB Fudarrell Maggitt, all first team all-league selections have helped the Lancers only allow 112 points all season.

The Union Titans Booster Club is throwing another tailgate party before the big game. Also, since Union will have to leave Clark County for the first time this season, the Booster Club will lead a caravan from Union High School to the Tacoma Dome.
