A Quick Look Ahead At Next Weekend’s Games
For the second year in a row the GSHL narrowly avoided the need for a tie breaker to determine who makes the playoffs.
Last year, had Evergreen defeated Mountain View, we would of had a 3 way tie (Skyview, Heritage, Evergreen) at the top of the 4A GSHL with only 2 spots up for grabs. This year, had Evergreen defeated Mountain View we would of had a 3 way tie (Heritage, Kelso, Evergreen) for second place in the 4A GSHL. For some reason, Mountain View is not a fan of the Kansas Plan tie breaker.
Although, none of the GSHL schools needed a tie breaker, thanks to Columbia River’s win over Prairie, there are still plenty of playoff spots not decided as of yet.
Here is what we do know.
4A
Skyview is the #1 seed and has a home game next weekend. We do not know who they play just yet. Federal Way (7-2) and Gig Harbor (4-5) will play on Tuesday to see who will be heading down to Kiggins Bowl to play the Storm. Gig Harbor is only 4-5, but played South Kitsap (9-0) very well in a 28-21 loss in week 2. Federal Way is pretty solid, they have won 6 in a row and looked pretty good doing so.
Heritage is the #2 seed and will be playing at South Kitsap (9-0). This game should be on Friday night. South Kitsap is ranked #7 in state and won by an average score of 32-13.
3A
Union is the #1 seed and has a home game next weekend vs. Olympic (6-3). Olympic lost 3 games in a row vs. the top 3 teams in the Olympic/Western Cascade Conference. They were blown out by the top seed #5 Timberline (9-0) 63-21, but played North Thurston to a close game 38-34.
Camas will host #4 Liberty (8-1) next weekend. Liberty’s only loss was last week to Bellevue 27-21.
Columbia River will play at Nathan Hale (5-4) Saturday at 7pm. Nathan Hale lost to #6 O’Dea 42-6 last night in the Metor League Championship Game. Nathan Hale did loose 38-6 to Black Hills, a 2A school who will be hosting Woodland next weekend.
2A
Mark Morris will have a home game next weekend, most likely on Saturday. The Monarchs could play either Aberdeen, Centralia, Elma, Hoquiam or River Ridge. Those teams will be playing on Tuesday to see who will play Mark Morris. None of the 5 teams have a winning record.
R.A. Long will host Tumwater (6-3) most likely on Friday since they share Longview Memorial Stadium with Mark Morris. Tumwater lost to Black Hills (7-2), W.F. West (9-0), and 3A #5 Timberline.
Woodland will travel to play Black Hills next weekend. Black Hills lost 35-14 to 3A Timberline and 14-0 to W.F. West last night. Their other 7 games they won by an average score of 35-12.
Hockinson will travel to play W.F. West next weekend. W.F. West’s closest game was their 27-19 win over Heritage. Their closest game vs. a 2A schools was their 14-0 win over Black Hills last night.

Union Rallies For 3 Late TD’s In 35-31 Comeback Win At Camas
Union rove 80 yards in 14 plays on the opening drive and RB Nathaniel Penaranda scored from 12 yards out to give Union an early 7-0 lead. Then it was all Camas… or so it seamed.
Following that Union Score, Camas added a Tyler Fisher TD run, 2 Logan Grindy to Addison Owen TD passes, and a Stuart Jergensen FG to go up 24-7.
The FG was followed by a Mitch Saylor 99 yard kick off return for a TD, the only Union life the Titans would have in nearly 3 quarters of football.
Camas took the second half kick off and drove 67 yards in 11 plays as they went up 31-14 on a Logan Grindy to Jeremy Faulkner TD pass.
Union QB Brandon Weller was intercepted by Camas OLB Brock Beall, who ran the ball back to the Titans 12. Camas looked like they would put the final nail in the coffin and wrap this game up late in the 3rd quarter. Grindy however was picked off by DB Matt Merlino at the 3 keeping the score at 31-14.
Union then scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, as RB Blake Russell scored 2 rushing TD’s and following an onside kick recovered by T.J. Boatright, Brandon Weller hit Penaranda on a swing pass from 13 yards for the game winning TD.
With the win, Union improves to 8-1 and 5-0 in league. The Titans finish as the 3A GSHL league champions and will host Olympic (6-3) Friday/Saturday in the preliminary round of the state playoffs.
Camas falls to 7-2 and 4-1 in league with the loss. The Papermakers will host #4 Liberty (8-1) Friday/Saturday in the preliminary round of the state playoffs.

Skyview Takes GSHL 4A Title With 33-7 Win At Heritage
The Skyview Storm went on the road and defeated the Heritage Timberwolves 33-7 to capture their second 4A GSHL championship in as many years. Last year Skyview was a co-champ with Heritage but finished as the #1 seed after a 55-15 win over Heritage. This year at 5-0 in league, the Storm won the league outright.
Skyview QB Austin Dodge again had a big night passing going 18-28 for 260 yards, but ended the night without a passing TD. Heritage QB Garrett Grayson was 12-31 for 131, but had 2 picks and only 1 TD.
With the win Skyview improves to 7-2 and 5-0 in league and won the 4A GSHL league title. The Storm will play the winner of a Federal Way/Gig Harbor mini play off game on Tuesday.
Heritage drops to 4-5 and 3-2 in league play. The Timberwolves still finished as the #2 team in the 4A GSHL and will travel to #7 South Kitsap (9-0).

Mountain View Shocks Evergreen In 20-14 Win
Evergreen led 14-0 with 7 minutes left in the game. The Thunder scored 20 points in the final minutes for the 20-14 win.
Since Heritage had lost to Skyview and Kelso had defeated Battle Ground, Evergreen just needed to hold their 14-0 lead and they would have created a 3 way tie for 2nd place in the 4A GSHL. However that did not happen after a 77 yard TD pass from Lucas Swanson to Rashan Williams tied the game, then following a Thunder interception, Andrew White caught a 51 yard TD pass from Swanson for the game winner with 30 seconds left in the 4th.
With the win Mountain View improves to 5-4 and 2-3 in league. The Thunder will host Fort Vancouver (2-7) on Saturday at 1pm in a week 10 non league cross over game. This is not a playoff game.
Evergreen drops to 4-5 on the season and 2-3 in league play. The Plainsmen’ season is over.
