Woodland’s Trevor Hurn Along With Mark Morris’s Jake McCoy And Taylor Beck To Play In 2010 Earl Barden All-Star Football Classic This Summer

Woodland QB Trevor Hurn
This summer in Yakima 3 local players will be participating in the 16th annual Earl Barden All-Star Football Classic.
The 2009 Coaches 2A Offense Player Of Year Trevor Hurn will make the trip east and represent his Woodland Beavers. Hrun capped off his high school career with an outstanding season completing 181 of 325 passes for 2,632 yards and 27 touchdowns. Hurn was also selected as the 1st Team QB for The Daily News’s 2009 All-Area Football Team.
“In my 28 years of coaching football, Trevor Hurn is by far the best Quarterback I have ever coached,” said Mark Greenleaf Woodland’s head football coach. “What separates Trevor from the rest of the pack is his calmness while in the pocket and his accuracy in throwing the football, which is by far the most impressive ability that he possesses.”
Trevor has accepted a scholarship to play football at Southern Oregon University this fall. “Trevor has the potential to have a great transition to college football due to those abilities and his competitiveness to succeed,” Greenleaf added.
Joining Hurn will be a pair of Mark Morris Monarchs, Jake McCoy And Taylor Beck.
Both were voted as 2A All-State Honorable Mention athletes in 2009. Beck an outstanding offensive lineman, and McCoy a hard nosed middle linebacker.
“Taylor is such a smart player, he know what going on all the time” said Shawn Perkins, Mark Morris head football coach. “He also comes off the ball very fast and low, because this he gets his hands on guys and moves people.”
When asked what makes Jake McCoy such a good football player, Perkins said, “Jake is just so intense and focused when he is on the field. He does not miss much.”
“I was ecstatic when I found out that I will be getting to play with all these great players,” said McCoy.
Jake McCoy received many awards in 2009. Along with his All-State Honorable Mention, he was a member of the 2009 GSHLFootball.com All Level All-Star team, the 2009 Coaches 2A Defense Player Of Year, as well as the the Defense Player Of Year for The Daily News’s 2009 All-Area Football Team.
When asked what it felt like to be honored so many times by so many people, McCoy said, “It’s a great feeling to be honored, I am glad that I could entertain people by the way I played football.”
“The awards are great and they show that our program is improving,” said Perkins “We want our players to strive to be the best and because of Jake a lot of our younger players see all his hard work has paid off.”
Coach Perkins also added that while at Bremerton High School in 2002, Tieba Bropleh had a similar season to that of McCoys. “Jake and Tieba are a lot a like in that they both are great leaders and loved to play the great game of football.”
Last summer Mark Morris head football coach Shawn Perkins was chosen as an assistant coach for the game. When asked if making this summers game was a goal of his, McCoy said, “A goal no, but an achievement that I was glad to have.”
The Earl Barden All-Star Football Classic features seniors from the 2A, 1A, 2B and 1B classifications and will be held on Saturday June 26th at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima with a 1pm kickoff.

Here are a few pictures of the new Doc Harris Stadium. Camas will open the 2010 season with 2 road games and the first home game will be week 3, September 17 versus Columbia River.
The stadium will hold 3,000 fans on the home side and an additional 1,000 on the road side. Both sides will be covered, which is a huge imporvement to the old Doc Harris which only had about 3/4 of the home side covered.

Former Columbia River Chieftain Jordyn Jackson Signs Free Agent Contract With The San Diego Chargers
It didn’t take long after the NFL draft was over for former Columbia River Chieftain Jordyn Jackson to get a call from the San Diego Chargers.Only minutes after NFL teams were officially allowed to pursue free agent signees, Jackson received THE call. The call with an offer to sign to play professional football with the San Diego Chargers. Of course Jackson accepted the offer, signing bonus and all.
“It was simply overwhelming” said Jordyn talking about the call.
When asked what was next Jackson said “I don’t know exactly what is next, sitting down with my agent later tonight, then I expect to be down in San Diego soon.”
In 2009 Jackson completed a 3 year career at the Eastern Oregon University where he played both RB and WR. In 2009 Jackson had 60 catches for 848 yards and 10 TD, all of which led the team. He finished his career with 2087 all purpose yards and 13 TD’s. Jordyn spent his first 2 seasons at EOU as a RB then made the move to WR for his senior season.
“Often times you see even great athletes fail at making the switch. He embraced the role of a receiver and really got a chance to show off his athletic ability” said former EOU teammate Terrance Pharr. San Diego is expected to use Jackson as a slot receiver. “For a slot, they like my size and strength and that my game was so aggressive” said Jackson.
Jordyn has been working out locally with strength coach and ARP trainer Ryan Paul at New Athlete in Hazel Del to get himself ready to play in the NFL. “I’ve known Jordyn for about five years. He’s a resilient person and athlete” said Paul who has also done training with former Grant High School star Ndamukong Suh who was drafted #2 overall by the Detroit Lions Thursday night. When asked about Jackson’s size and if he thinks Jordyn is ready to play in the NFL physically, Paul said, “He’s very strong, in fact, one of the strongest athletes I’ve ever trained. With the exception of big guys like Ndamukong Suh, Myles Wade (Texas Tech), and Josh Tschirgi he’s right there with them.”
Jackson said he got ready for his Pro Day at New Athelete and that is where he met the scout from the Chargers. When the scout called him Saturday, he said Jackson had worked really hard and his hard work stands out.
Many Southwest Washington football fans will remember Jackson as the Columbia River running back who led the 2002 Chieftains to the Tacoma Dome and an 11-1 record. In 2003 Jackson again led Columbia River back to the state playoffs and another 10 win season. He finished that season with 2,225 yards rushing and 26 TD’s. Those gaudy numbers plus the success of his team helped him earn several awards, including the Coaches 3A Greater St. Helens League Co-Offensive Player Of The Year, The Columbian’s All Region Player Of The Year, and First Team All-State RB from both the AP, and WashingtonPreps.com.When asked about his days playing football at Columbia River, Jordyn said, “Those are the best days of your life, playing high school football. I would not trade those for anything.”
While Jordyn still has a long road ahead of him to make the 53 man roster of the San Diego Chargers, he is fully ready to accept the challenge. Don’t let his 5’11″ 190 lb body fool you. Jackson has been told he is too small by a lot of people, and now a lot of people know that they were wrong.

On Friday the WIAA voted down the first amendment on the docket. While that vote was overshadowed by the vote to restructure the state basketball tournament, it was still an important vote that would have had a major impact on Southwest Washington football if it had passed.
As one Greater Saint Helens League football team gains a new head coach, another one loses theirs.
The 3A GSHL has plenty of new faces for the 2010 football season. One team is gone, one is back, and one is here for the first time. Gone are the Union Titans, the 2008 and 2009 league champions. Union is now playing in the 4A. Back are the Kelso Hilanders. After a 2 year stint with the 4A, Kelso moves back down to the 3A Greater St. Helens League where they were from 2001-2007. And for the first time in Mountain View’s history, the Thunder will not be playing at the highest level of football in Southwest Washington.
