Mitch Saylor Named 3A/4A All State Game MVP As GSHL Players Dominate Game In 28-9 East Victory

#94 Taylor Nelson (Union), #18 Mitch Saylor (Union), #41 Dallin Shirley (Skyview), #3 Austin Dodge (Skyview), #49 Zach Chapman (Mountain View), #42 Nathaniel Penaranda (Union), #54 Justin O'Neil (Kelso), #78 Tim Davison (Kelso) not pictured
Now, we may be a little biased… but maybe the 3A/4A All State Football Game needs to be renamed the ‘Greater St. Helens League Showcase Classic.’
Last season, GSHL players played a big part in a 13-12 East win, today they flat out dominated!
The West team led by Meadowdale QB Danny McDonald, and Olympic RB Larry Dixon, went nowhere whenever they ran to their left. Mountain View DE Zach Chapman, Skyview OLB Dallin Shirley and Union MLB Taylor Nelson shut down that half of the field the entire day. The right side was handled by UW-bound DE Sione Potoa’e of Lakes, and Lewis & Clark FS Levi Taylor. 9 points was all the West could manage which included a safety and a short field TD run following a turnover. Not sure what happened on the turnover (cough, cough).
For some reason watching McDonald and Dixon get shut down seemed very familiar…
Kelso provided some up-front beef as Tim Davison and Justin O’Neil both started on the O-Line. Davison left the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury, but we were told it was not serious and they just keep him out the rest of the game to play it safe. O’Neil played the entire game at Guard.
The fireworks Saturday afternoon were also provided thanks to GSHL players.
Following a missed West FG attempt, Skyview QB Austin Dodge led 72 yard TD drive in which he hit Union WR Mitch Saylor from 56 yards out on a 4th and inches. Dodge stepped up in the pocked and threw a laser beam which Saylor caught in stride at the 30 before out racing 2 West DB’s to the end zone.
In the second quarter, following many quick outs to Saylor, Union WR Nathaniel Penaranda ran a sucker rout and flew down the field wide-open as Mt. Spokane QB Travis Ward avoided being sacked and hit Penaranda on a 67 yard TD pass. Penaranda also returned kick-offs for the East team running back one for 25 yards, the last 5 yards of which he carried 1/2 the West team along for a ride.
Late in the 4th, up 14-9 and looking to put the game away, Dodge once again hit Saylor for a TD, this time from 10 yards out.
Saylor finished the game with 7 catches for 118 yards and the 2 TD’s earning the game MVP.
Dodge just missed a 3rd TD as a perfect pass was dropped in the end zone in the 2nd quarter. Not sure who dropped that one (cough, cough).
Lewis & Clark FS Levi Taylor capped off the games scoring in the final minutes with a short TD run.
I think changing the name of the game may be a stretch, but I am quite confident that next summer in Spokane a hand full of GSHL players will lead the East to a 4th consecutive win.

NOTE: Tim Davison was not avalible for a post game interview, and I forgot to track down Zach. Sorry about that. Zach does have a cameo in Austin Dodge’s video.

Oregon State Team Camp Day 3: Skyview v Crescent Valley
Skyview faced the Crescent Valley Raiders out on the rugby fields Thursday afternoon. The Strom took it to them with hard running from Parker Henry (#42). Both QB’s Kody Watts (#16) and Kieran McDonagh (#2) played well. WR’s Karl Graves (#6) scored on a deep ball. Both Henderson’s, Ellis (#7) and Riley (#3), broke screen passes for long gains. The defense played aggressively finishing off plays on every snap.

Oregon State Team Camp Day 3: Camas v Union
WOW!
This scrimmage was all I could have hoped it to be. Full of emotion and fire. Both the Camas and Union players wanted this one bad. The Titans defense was lights out from the get go, with Camas picking it up on offense in their second set of plays. It’s really too bad we wont get to see this game in 2010.
Oregon State Team Camp Day 2: Columbia River v Crescent Valley
Columbia River was next to take the field at Reser Stadium, and faced the Crescent Valley Raiders. Chieftain RB/LB Kingsley Nkwonta (#34) looked to be the best player on the field this afternoon.
