Poll Question: Which Doubleheader Will Have The More Competitive Games?
Fans have a pair of doubleheaders to choose from Friday night.
At McKenzie Stadium, Battle Ground will take on Evergreen followed by Union and Mountain View.
At Kiggins Bowl, Lincoln of Portland will face Skyview followed by Columbia River and Hudson’s Bay.
Our “Experts” picked the same 4 winners in each game, but that does not mean we don’t think there will be some close games.
So we ask…

Week 5 AP Poll – Camas Receives One First-Place Vote In 3A But Still Ranked #3; In 4A Skyview Falls Out And Union Not In
The Camas Papermakers land at #3 in the first 3A AP football poll of 2010. That’s not much of a surprise since the Seattle Times and Tacoma News Tribune have ranked them at #3 all season. Bellevue and Kamiakin each snagged 1 first-place vote, while overall #1 Liberty received 7.
Skyview, who was ranked #8 in the first 4A AP football poll last week, dropped out following their 28-12 road loss at Camas last week. Read below. It appears as though Skyview should have scheduled non-league games with Hanford and Pasco instead of Sherwood and Camas. Maybe than they would be ranked.
I still can’t believe that Union at 3-1 is not ranked, and did not even receive 6 or more points. Richland at #7? The Bombers finally beat a team with a winning record when they squeaked by Davis (3-1) 31-21 at home. But who has Davis played? Moses Lake (0-4) Eastmont (2-2) Sunnyside (2-2). Davis is Richland’s signature win? We know it is not Pasco (1-3), Hanford (1-3) or Evergreen (0-4). Chiawana at #10? They have wins over Hanford (1-3), Pasco (1-3), Walla Walla (1-3) and Eisenhower (3-1) only led Evergreen 21-20 in the 3rd at home last week. Good thing high school football has a playoff and teams get to prove it on the field in November.

Experts Picks – Week 5
We run the site, so in our book, that makes us experts!Week 4 was another solid outing for our panel of “experts”. Bryan and Mike each went 8-3 for a second week in a row. Cody got 7 of the 11 games. Among our armchair experts out there, 3 picked 10 of the 11 games, MeanMachine, MVHS Athlete and K-nute. 4 others went 9-2 Scotty Pride, justagymteacher, wsumj and 40. As far as us 3, we all missed on Battle Ground (second time this season we all picked the Tigers and they lost) and Clatskanie. The deciding games ended up being Bryan picking Prairie over Fort Vancouver and Mike picking Centralia over R.A. Long. Cody missed on both. Scotty Pride’s remains the overall leader following his 9-2 week at 35-11. Now we have a 2 way tie for second, 1 game back at 34-12 between wsumj and 40. Cody lost 2 games and is now 4 back at 31-15. Mike is also 4 back at 31-15. Bryan, like last week, is still waiting for league play to hit full swing before he makes his push, and is 6 back at 29-17. Bryan is getting killed by his 2A picks this season. He has missed at least 2 games each week and 10 overall.
This week we all agree on all but 1 game, only Cody’s pick of Washougal over R.A. Long keep us from all picking the same teams. Last week we again went 7-2 on games in which all 3 of us picked the same team and we are 20-6 this season when we all agree. Live by the sward, die by the sward. All 3 of us will either be quite happy or equally frustrated come late Friday night.
Bryan (29-17 63%) – Mike (31-15 67%) – Cody (31-15 67%) Battle Ground (1-3 0-0) at Evergreen (0-4 0-0)* Bryan’s pick:
Evergreen defeated Battle Ground 24-7 last season on the road. In 2008 at Evergreen, the Plainsmen beat the Tigers 20-17. Evergreen has won 8 straight over Battle Ground and 16 of the last 17. The two schools have played each other every season since 1993. Evergreen fought hard Friday night in Yakima but did not have enough to avoid the 0-4 start. The Plainsmen trailed Eisenhower 21-20 in the third quarter and had the ball at the Cadets 2 looking to take the lead before a fumble opened the floodgates and 27 4th quarter points by Ike led to the 48-26 road loss. Plainsmen QB Anthony Thomas was 13/21 for 161 yards and a pair of TD’s and Chase Lawrence had 128 yards rushing in the loss. Lawrence has 379 yards rushing on the season which is 3rd in the 4A GSHL.
Battle Ground RB Kevin Haynes scored on a 22 yard run play to tie the visiting Hudson’s Bay Eagles at 7-7 early in the 2nd quarter Friday. That’s when the wheels fell off, and Bay put up 28 unanswered in the back half of the 2nd quarter then hung on as the Tigers could not come back and fell 35-14 to drop to 1-3 on the season. Haynes leads the Tigers with 201 rushing yards on the season and 4 rushing touchdowns.
Last 5 meetings:
- 2009 Evergreen 24 at Battle Ground 7
- 2008 at Evergreen 20 Battle Ground 17
- 2007 at Evergreen 37 Battle Ground 6
- 2006 Evergreen 34 at Battle Ground 21
- 2005 at Evergreen 24 Battle Ground 0
Mike’s pick:
Cody’s pick:
Heritage (0-4 0-1) at Grant OR (2-2) Bryan’s pick:
Heritage has never played Grant of Portland in football. Grant plays in the 6A (same as WA 4A) PIL and is the defending football champions going 10-2 last season and loosing to state runner-up Jesuit 33-0 in the OSAA Quarterfinals. Heritage’s last game versus an Oregon school was in 2007, a 26-25 home win over Crater. They also had a 69-8 win over Parkrose, who went 0-10 that season. Heritage looked like last week was going to be the week to get in the win column up 17-7 at the half with Mountain View. However for the third week in a row the Timberwolves found themselves on the wrong end of a nail biter falling 30-29 to the Thunder. QB Riley O’Dell threw for 317 yards and also ran for a touchdown in the loss. Through 4 weeks, O’Dell leads all GSHL (4A/3A/2A) passers with 822 passing yards and his 105.40 QB Rating is 1st in the 4A GSHL. WR’s Ben Lyons and Nate Mitchell are 1,2 in the 4A GSHL in receiving yards with 319 (Lyons) and 210 (Mitchell).
It’s homecoming week for the Grant Generals of Portland this week. Grant improved to 2-2 on the season Friday with a 31-7 win over Beaverton (1-3). Grant RB Trevionte Riley had 163 yards rushing and a touchdown in the Generals win last week. Bryson Brown had an 80 yard touchdown run, and QB Paris Penn threw a pair of touchdowns as well last week.

Mike’s pick:
Cody’s pick:
Lincoln OR (1-3) at Skyview (2-2) Bryan’s pick:
Skyview will play the Lincoln Cardinals from Portland in football for the first time. The Cardinals finished second in the 5 team PIL in 2009 with a 3-1 league record and 6-4 overall. They still made the OSAA playoffs, however Lincoln lost a home game to Sprague 41-14 in the opening round. Storm RB Parker Henry ran for 150 yards and a touchdown Friday night but it was not enough to knock off the #3 ranked Camas Papermakers. Henry has 533 rushing yards on the season putting him at #2 in the 4A GSHL in rushing this season. QB Kody Watts is 2nd in the 4A GSHL with 482 passing yards. WR Karl Graves is 3rd in receiving yards with 204. Skyview will be playing their second school from Oregon this week, and only their second unranked opponent.
Lincoln fell to David Douglas 37-34 at home last week. Two weeks ago in the Cardinals lone win, RB Blake Kingsley had 3 rushing touchdowns to lead Lincoln to a 35-7 win at Wilson.

Mike’s pick:
Cody’s pick:
Columbia River (2-2 0-2) at Hudson’s Bay (1-3 0-1)* Bryan’s pick:
Columbia River won at Hudson’s Bay last season 28-14 to defeat the Eagles for the 7th time in the last 8 seasons. The Eagles last defeated the Chieftains in 2006, a 23-14 win at Columbia River. Hudson’s Bay picked up their first win of the season Friday night by beating the Battle Ground Tigers 35-14. Eagles QB Travis Roberts was 8/14 for 161 yards and threw 4 touchdown passes (all in the 2nd quarter) in the win. The Eagles had only scored 7 points in the first 3 games of he season. The win was Hudson’s Bay’s first win over a 4A school since a 13-9 win over Prairie in 2006.
Columbia River broke a two game skid Friday night with a 35-12 victory over Rainier of Oregon. RB Remick Kawawaki ran for 110 yards and a score in the win and QB Clayton Frank ran in 3 more touchdowns for the Chieftains. Kawawaki is 4th in the 3A GSHL with 300 rushing yards this season.

- 2001 at Hudson’s Bay 13 Columbia River 5
Mike’s pick:
Cody’s pick:
Fort Vancouver (2-2 0-1) at Kelso (3-1 2-0)* Bryan’s pick:
Kelso defeated the Trappers 55-28 at home in 2009. Kelso has defeated Fort Vancouver six seasons in a row. The last time the Trappers defeated Kelso was in 1998 at Kiggins Bowl, a 20-14 Trappers win. Kelso struggled last week at Union falling to the Titans 36-0. FB Jared O’Neil had 34 yards rushing on 11 carries and RB Riley Miller added another 23 on 4 carries. O’Neil is 6th in the 3A GSHL in rushing this season with 244 yards. Prior to the Union game Kelso had only allowed 9 points all season and shutout Hudson’s Bay the week before 25-0 at home.
Fort Vancouver had no answer for Prairie’s passing attack Friday night. The Trappers trailed Prairie 34-7 heading into the 4th quarter and lost 47-23 at home. Fort QB Richard Vansiclen threw for 91 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Vansiclen is 3rd in the 3A GSHL in passing with 535 passing yards. RB Jordan Vela is 2nd in the 3A GSHL in rushing yards with 403.
Last 5 meetings:
- 2009 at Kelso 55 Fort Vancouver 28
- 2008 Kelso 28 at Fort Vancouver 14
- 2007 Kelso 35 at Fort Vancouver 14
- 2006 at Kelso 32 Fort Vancouver 12
- 2005 Kelso 59 at Fort Vancouver 6
Mike’s pick:
Cody’s pick:
Camas (4-0 2-0) at Prairie (2-2 1-1)* Bryan’s pick:
Since the Prairie dropped to the 3A GSHL in 2008 Camas has gone 2-0 versus the Falcons, winning 35-18 at home in 2008 and 52-14 at Prairie last season. Prairie evened their league record at 1-1 with an impressive 47-23 win at Fort Vancouver Friday night. Falcons QB Colin Seitz passed for 260 yards and 3 touchdowns and WR Jesse Zalk had 91 yards receiving a pair of touchdowns as well as 58 rushing yards and a score on the ground. Seitz leads all of the GSHL (4A/3A/2A) in both passing yards (841) and QB rating (116.22). The Falcons also have the top 3 statistical leaders in receiving yards in the 3A GSHL, Avi Slifer (17-330 4TD), Ansel Cecil (9-235 1 TD), and Zalk (11-224 4TD).
Camas is coming off an impressive home win over the #8 ranked 4A school in Washington, the Skyview Storm. Camas QB Logan Grindy threw 3 touchdown passes (8 yards to Addison Owen, 39 yards to Brent Hill and 11 yards to Ikaika Gunderson) in the 2nd quarter to lead Camas to the 28-12 win. Owen added a 63 yard interception return for a touchdown early in the 4th quarter to snuff out Skyview’s last shot at a comeback. Grindy is 2nd in the 3A GSHL to Seitz in both passing yards (634) and QB rating (94.20). Zack Marshall’s running has still been huge for the Papermakers. Marshall’s 364 rushing yards is 3rd in the 3A GSHL and his 7 rushing touchdowns are 1st in the 3A.

- 1990 at Prairie 34 Camas 19
Mike’s pick:
Cody’s pick:
Tumwater (3-1) at Hockinson (0-4 0-1) Bryan’s pick:
Hockinson has never played Tumwater in football. Tumwater is 3-1 and ranked #3 in the 2A by the Tacoma News Tribune. The T-Birds went 6-4 in 2009 and finished 3rd in the 2A Evergreen League. The T-Birds lost at R.A. Long in last seasons play-in game. Hockinson’s young football team continued to struggle Friday as they visited the defending 2A GSHL Champs. The Hawks fell 47-7 on the road to drop to 0-4 on the season. QB Jess Krahn did hit Connor Perry on a 65 yard touchdown in the 4th quarter to avoid the shutout. RB Cameron Flemming’s 230 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns are among the top 2A GSHL running backs.
Tumwater improved to 3-1 on the season following their 46-14 home win over North Thurston Friday. RB Ronnie Hastie had 199 yards rushing and a touchdown in the win. Christian Bush added 112 rushing yards and a score. In total the T-Birds racked up 419 rushing yards and 6 rushing touchdowns in the win. Tumwater’s only loss was in week 1 at 4A Olympia 27-21.
Last 5 meetings:

Mike’s pick:
Cody’s pick:
Mark Morris (2-2 1-0) at Woodland (0-4 0-1)* Bryan’s pick:
Mark Morris defeated Woodland 41-7 on the road last season. In 2008 the Beavers lost to Mark Morris on the road 34-27. Woodland defeated the Monarchs at home in 2007 25-20. Since Mark Morris dropped to 2A in 2006 the two have split the 4 games 2-2. Mark Morris took out a little frustration Friday night on the visiting Hockinson Hawks. Entering the game Mark Morris was 1-2 with a pair of road losses (at Kelso (22-6) and at River Ridge (31-6). Back at home where they had already knocked off 4A Heritage (24-21) the Monarchs rolled to a 47-7 league win. Senior Jeremy Wolf was moved from RB to QB and preformed quite well. Wolf was 3/6 for 129 yards with touchdowns on all 3 completions. Nikko Asbell added 106 rushing yards and a score as well. FB Dan Feeney’s 289 rushing yards leads the Monarchs and is among the best in the 2A GSHL.
Woodland hosted one of Oregon’s small school powers Friday night and lost to the defending state champion Scio Loggers 54-13. WR Nick Fuller again found the end zone a few times. Fuller had 74 receiving yards on 5 catches in the loss. Nick has now caught a touchdown pass in each of the Beavers 4 games this season and leads the 2A GSHL with 313 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns. QB Adam Shoup’s 601 passing yards also leads the 2A GSHL. WR Tyler VonDracek’s 198 receiving yards is 2nd in the 2A GSHL.

Mike’s pick:
Cody’s pick:
Washougal (3-1 0-0) at R.A. Long (3-1 0-0)* Bryan’s pick:
R.A. Long defeated the Panthers 14-0 on the road last season. In 2008 the Lumberjacks defeated Washougal 42-12 at home. Washougal however defeated the Lumberjacks in 2007 at home 30-28 and in 2006 in Longview 36-0. R.A. Long has won 11 of the last 15 meetings with the Panthers. R.A. Long could not stop Centralia early on the road Friday as the Lumberjacks fell to the #10 2A Tigers 46-14. QB Austin Wegdahl did throw a pair of touchdowns in the loss. Wegdahl is 2nd in the 2A GSHL with 491 passing yards and has a QB rating of 99.15 which leads the 2A GSHL.
Washougal improved to 3-1 on the season with their 24-8 road win at Clatskanie of Oregon Friday. Washougal last won 3 games in a season back in 2007 and their last 3-1 start was in 2004. RB Sam O’Hara had 2 rushing touchdowns in the win. O’Hara has scored in each game this season and has 8 total touchdowns on the season.

Mike’s pick:
Cody’s pick:
Union (3-1 0-0) at Mountain View (3-1 1-1) Bryan’s pick:
Union and Mountain View have never played each other in football. The two are both in the Evergreen School District. Mountain View improved to 3-1 on the season with their 30-29 non-league win over Heritage Friday. RB P.J. Jones had 219 rushing yards on 18 carries and a pair of touchdowns in the win, good enough to win the week 4 GSHLFootball.com Player of the Week award. Fellow Thunder RB Jeff Carmondy also ran for 100 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Jones leads all GSHL (4A/3A/2A) running backs so far this season with 625 rushing yards.
Union shut down Kelso Friday in a 36-0 hom win for the Titans. Kelso was held to only 24 yards of total offense and had -3 yards passing. RB Zak Browning had his second straight game with 4 rushing touchdowns. Browning had 170 yards rushing on 17 carries. Browning leads the 4A GSHL in rushing yards with 535. QB Kaben Humphrey-Buttler had 102 passing yards in the win, his second 100+ passing yard game this season. RB Brandon Brody-Heim left the Westview game early last week when he hit his head hard on the ground. He returned this week and added 58 yards of total offense and a rushing touchdown.

Tuesday it was announced that both the 4A and 3A Greater St. Helens League would receive 3 week 10 preliminary round spots in 2010 & 2011.

Week 4 Power Rankings – No Changes This Week
Week 4 of Greater St. Helens League football gave us 2 games with teams both ranked in the top 5 of the GSHL Power Rankings. #1 Camas hosted #3 Skyview, and #2 Union hosted #4 Kelso. After all was said and done the week 4 rankings are the same as the week 3 rankings. #1 Camas looked pretty good in their 28-12 win over #3 Skyview. The Papermakers QB Logan Grindy threw 3 touchdowns in the second quarter and took a 21-3 lead into the half. The Storm got a touchdown and safety in the third quarter but could not come back. #2 Union flexed their defensive muscle Friday night in their 36-0 win over #4 Kelso. The Hilanders could only manage 24 yards of offense in the entire game, and had negative 3 yards in the second half. Meanwhile Union RB Zak Browning had 4 rushing touchdowns for the second week in a row. Browning had 170 yards on 17 carries in the win. #5 Mountain View fell behind early to a winless Heritage team 17-7 before a wild second half of back and forth lead changes ended with the Thunder on top 30-29. Thunder RB P.J. Jones had 219 rushing yards on 18 carries and a pair of rushing touchdowns in the win. R.A. Long is still on the radar despite being blown out on the road at Centralia Friday. Cross-town rival Mark Morris joins the Lumbarjacks on the radar following their 47-7 home league win over Hockinson.GSHL Power Rankings
1 - Camas (4-0)
2 – Union (3-1)
3 - Skyview (2-2)
4 – Kelso (3-1)
5 - Mountain View (3-1)On the radar: R.A. Long (3-1), Mark Morris (2-2)
The Week 4 GSHL Power Rankings sees no change from week 3.
NOTE: If we believed in “co-” anythings, Camas and Union might have been co-#1′s this week. But we believe that you have to make a pick and that’s that. Just keep in mind, Camas and Union are both that good!
1. Camas holds on to the top spot after the knocked off AP #8 Skyview 28-12 at home Friday. Camas QB Logan Grindy threw 3 touchdowns in the win and was 15/24 for 172 yards. Grindy has passed for 100+ yards in all 4 games and has 634 passing yards on the season (2nd in the 3A GSHL and 4th among all GSHL 4A/3A/2A passers). RB Zack Marshall had 70 rushing yards in the win, and now has 364 on the season (3rd in the 3A GSHL) and his 7 rushing touchdowns still lead the 3A GSHL. Defensively Camas held Skyview to 12 points, the lowest for the Storm since week 1 of last year, a 14-9 loss at Union. The Papermakers are only allowing an average of 11.75 points per game, and have not allowed more than 15 in any single game this season. Camas has only allowed 1 passing touchdown this season (Hanson to Jones in Mountain View game) and has only allowed 7 4th quarter points all season when Mountain View scored in the final seconds while trailing 27-7. Camas will travel to Prairie (2-2) for a league game at District Stadium, Friday night, 7:00 p.m.
2. Union stays at #2 for now following their 36-0 home win over #4 Kelso. RB Zak Browning is getting used to scoring a whole lot of touchdowns. Browning has scored 9 in the last 3 games, and 4 in each of the last 2. With his 170 rushing yards Friday, Browning now has 535 on the season, enough to lead the 4A GSHL. Not bad for being the full back the first 2+ weeks of the season. Brandon Brody-Heim is still 4th in the 4A GSHL in rushing this season with 273 yards despite missing most of last weeks game. QB Kaben Humphrey-Butler threw for 102 yards in the game, his second 100+ yard game of the season. Defensively Union simply shut 4down the Kelso offense. Hilander QB Makaio Mobbs completed 3 passes for -3 yards and was sacked 5 times, losing 30 more yards. Union has only allowed 21 points in their last 3 games, and 0 rushing touchdowns. The Titans have also not allowed any scoring in either the 1st or 4th quarters in the past 3 weeks. Union will play #5 Mountain View (3-1) as the road team at McKenzie Stadium, Friday night, 8:00 p.m.
3. Skyview stays at #3 despite their 28-12 road loss at #1 Camas. Skyview was able to move the all on Camas during the game but failed to score on a couple of long drives. The Storm took the opening drive 60 yards down the the Camas 20 before missing a field goal. On the last drive of the half, Skyview drove 67 yards down to the Papermakers 5 before throwing a pick in the end zone. RB Parker Henry ran for 100+ yards for the forth time this season. Henry’s 150 rushing yards on 19 carries give him 533 on the season, just 2 yards behind Browning for the 4A GSHL lead. Karl Graves had 4 catches for 73 yards in the loss, enough to move him up to 3rd in the 4A GSHL with 204 receiving yards. Ellis Henderson did sit out the Camas game with a sore knee, but should be back this week. Skyview will host Lincoln of Portland (2-2), Friday 5:00 pm at Kiggins Bowl.
4. Kelso became the first team to have a shutout win one week, followed up by a shutout loss the next, and remain in the same spot in the GHSL Power Rankings each week. There is not a whole lot positive to to say about the 36-0 loss at #2 Union Friday. FB Jared O’Neil did have 34 yards rushing on 11 carries and Riley Miller added another 23 on 4 carries. They are the first team ever to have been shutout by Union and not allow 45+ points. It is a good thing that Union moved up to 4A and Kelso dropped down to 3A. Kelso still has only allowed 9 points to teams not named Union. The Hilanders at 2-0 in league play are still well on their way to securing one of the 3 3A GSHL post season spots. Kelso will host Fort Vancouver (2-2) , Friday 7:00 pm at Schroeder Field.
5. Mountain View needed a 4th quarter comeback for the second week in a row as the Thunder rallied (multiple times) to beat Heritage 30-29 Friday night. On the surface, a 30-29 come-from-behind win over a 0-3 football team might not look so good. However, keep in mind that Heritage is a 4A school who lost to the #2 ranked 4A team in the AP poll (Issaquah) in week 1, then lost by 3 at the defending 2A GSHL Champions (Mark Morris) and lost in overtime 28-21 to the 2 time defending 4A GSHL Champions (Skyview). Heritage is one of the better 0-4 football teams you will ever run across. As far as the Thunder, they just keep running the football, and it’s working. Despite going 0-3 in the passing game, Mountain View ran for 354 yards Friday night. RB P.J. Jones again led the way with 219 rushing yards on 18 carries and had a pair of rushing touchdowns. Jeff Carmody also ran for 100 yards on 10 carries and had a rushing touchdown, marking the second week in a row that 2 Thunder backs have ran for 100+ yards in the same game. Jones leads the entire GSHL (4A/3A/2A) with his 625 rushing yards and was selected as the week 4 GSHL Football Player of the Week. Mountain View host #2 Union, Friday night, 8:00 pm at McKenzie Stadium.

Greater St. Helens League Week 10 Football Playoff Allocations Announced

Heritage WR Ben Lyons and his Timberwolves may be 0-4 but that doesn't mean the post season is out of reach as 3 4A Greater St. Helens League teams will make the post season in 2010 & 2011. Photo by Dave Scott
As strange as it is, the playoff seeding was just announced today, 4+ weeks into the season.
There is good news. Both the 4A Greater St. Helens League and 3A Greater St. Helens League will get 3 teams in the round of 32 for the next 2 seasons.
In the 4A, the GSHL Champions will host the South Puget Sound League South #4 on the weekend of November 5/6 (all week 10 games will be either on Friday the 5th or Saturday the 6th). The runner-up will travel up to Seattle and face the KingCo #2. The third place GSHL team will also hit the road, and take on the South Puget Sound League North #1.
In the 3A, the GSHL Champions will host the Metro #4. The runner-up will travel up north to face the Narrows #2. The third place GSHL team will play at the Metro #3.
It is odd that last season the 4A GSHL had 6 teams and only 2 teams made it to week 10, while they now have only 5 teams, but get a third team in. But hey, lets just be happy we got it.
You might be thinking, “Wow! That means the 4A GSHL could have a team with a losing record in the playoffs?” If so, don’t let the WIAA hear you think that. Remember that according to them, week 10 is NOT the playoffs, just a preliminary round to see who makes it to the “playoffs” the next week. So, there will be a playoff to see who makes the playoffs, but it is NOT a playoff game.
So, now you are thinking, “Wow! That means the 4A GSHL could have a team with a losing record in the post season?” Yep. Battle Ground (1-3) Heritage (0-4) Evergreen (0-4) are all still alive for the post season. Evergreen and Heritage will need to win out to avoid a losing regular season. If that happens it will not be the first time a 4A GSHL team has gone sub-500 and made the post season. In 2005 two GSHL teams (Skyview 3-6 3-3 in league and Battle Ground 2-7 2-5 in league) finished with losing records and represented the GSHL in week 10 as the 3rd and 4th seeds. It did not work out so well as Skyview lost at Gig Harbor 31-6 and Battle Ground lost at Edmonds-Woodway 28-0.
Unless something is changed next year the 4A GSHL #2 will host KingCo #2 and the 3A GSHL #2 will host the Narrows #2.
If the playoffs started today and we used non-league records instead of league records… Meaning it wont be this way, but it is fun to guess.

Seattle Times Has Camas #3, Union #10 While Tacoma News Tribune Has Camas #3 And Snubs Union; Skyview Drops Out Of Both Polls

Skyview's Albert Chon (#54 white) puts pressure on Camas QB Logan Grindy Friday night. The Papermakers won 28-12 and remain #3 in both polls, while the Storm fell out of both after the loss. Photo by Dave Scott
Camas (4-0) remains ranked #3 in both the 3A Seattle Times and Tacoma News Tribune polls following their 28-12 home win over then #8 Skyview (2-2) . That does not come as any surprise that the Papermakers remain at #3. They are still behind Bellevue (3-1) and Liberty (3-1) in both polls. Bellevue’s lone loss was to 4A #1 Skyline, while Liberty’s lone loss was to 4A #6 Issaquah (3-1) who’s lone loss was to 4A #1 Skyline. The Papermakers best shot to move up in the rankings will be to run the table, keep winning big, then wait for the Bellevue at Liberty game week 9 and hope to jump ahead of the loser. Unless Juanita can knock one of them off.
In the 4A polls, Skyview dropped out of both after their above mentioned loss at Camas. Skyview is now 2-2 with a pair of losses to ranked teams, #3 Camas (28-12) and #1 Sherwood of Oregon (42-28). The Strom also have a win over a ranked team, #5 Coeur d’Alene of Idaho (36-34) but at 2-2 did not make the cut. The Storm are still listed as teams just on the outside looking in by both papers.
The Union Titans improved to 3-1 Friday with their 36-0 win over then undefeated Kelso. The win, combined with Skyview’s loss, was enough to get the Titans in at #10 in the Seattle Times poll, but for some reason, it was not enough to crack the top 10 in the Tacoma News Tribune poll. All 4 Titans opponents have either been ranked or undefeated when they met on the field. Week 1 in Seattle Union trailed #1 Bellevue 7-6 at the half before losing 20-6. Week 2 they hammered then #6 Enumclaw 38-7. Week 3 they went on the road and physically manhandled Oregon’s then #8 Westview 34-14. And Friday, shut out a 3-0 Kelso team 36-0, only allowing the Hilanders just over 20 yards of total offense. The Times does have Bellevue still ranked #1 in 3A while the Tribune only has them #2. Maybe that’s why Chiawana (4-0) who has wins over Hanford (1-3), Pasco (1-3), Eisenhower (3-1) and Walla Walla (1-3) is in, but the Titans are not.
The R.A. Long Lumberjacks (3-1) are no longer on the Tacoma News Tribune “next” list after their 46-14 raod loss to then #10 Centralia (4-0). This marks the first TNT poll to not have at least one 2A Greater St. Helens League school either ranked or listed as next since before the 2008 season, our first year covering GHSL Football.
The Seattle Times only ranks 4A and 3A schools.
No other GSHL schools were ranked by either paper.
