Poll Question: Which 0,1 or 2 Win Team Do You Expect The Biggest Bounce Back From In 2011?
2010 saw 6 of the 17 Greater St. Helens League football teams win 2 or less games. While 4 of those had 1 or 0 wins. In contrast, only Camas at 9-0 had 1 or 0 losses.
Some if not all of the 6 are bound to bounce back in 2011.

Skyview Remains 4A GSHL Champs With 37-34 Win At Union
NBLC
Nothing But League Champs!
That is what the Skyview football program lives by, and Friday night, for a third year in a row, that is just what they accomplished, the 4A Greater St. Helens League Championship.
To do so, the Storm had to go into McKenzie Stadium and take on the 2x defending 3A GSHL Champions, the #8 ranked Union Titans.
Skyview struck early and often to jump out to a 17-0 lead after 1 quarter of play.
Storm DL William Lopez picked off a Kaben Humphry-Butler screen pass and ran it in 19 yards for the score on the 3rd play of the game. On the Titans next drive, Skyview DL Albert Chon recovered a fumble at the Titans 14, setting up Nick Phillips 1st of 3 field goals on the night, form 22 yards out. Union again fumbled the ball on their next possession, which Alex Mangin recovered at the Storm 48. Just 3 plays later Skyview QB Kieran McDonagh threw the ball out to WR Ellis Henderson who scooted down the sideline for a 33 yard touchdown and the early 17-0 lead with 2:50 to go in the 1st quarter.
Early in the 2nd quarter, Union started to claw their way back into the game. Humphrey-Butler capped off a 6 play 70 yard drive with a 5 yard touchdown run. Union DB Zach Nelson picked off McDonagh on Skyview’s next play setting up the Titans at the Storm 31. 4 plays later, on 4th and 9, Humphry-Butler found Tanner Nelson in the end zone for a 30 yard touchdown pass, cutting the Skyview lead to 4, at 17-13.
Over the next 4 minutes only 8 plays were ran, but each team scored another touchdown.
Skyview went 71 yards in just 5 plays following the Titnas score, and McDonagh hit Mo Morrison on a 17 yard touchdown pass to push the lead back up to 24-13.
Union only needed 3 plays to answer. Humphry-Butler went deep to Ray Burney on the first play, a 41 yard hookup. 2 plays later Zak Browning powered his way into the end zone from 13 yards out, and just like that it was 24-20.
Skyview struck first again in the 2nd half. On the Storm’s second possession they drove 43 yards in 11 plays down to the 8 before backing up and kicking another field goal. Phillips second on the night, form 37 yards out put Skyview up 27-20.
Union only needed 3 plays to go 80 yards and tie the game up at 27-27 when Brandon Bordy-Heim broke loose on a 35 yard touchdown run.
Then the fog really settled in and made things very difficult to see.
Skyview answered again, the theme of the night, with another Nick Phillips field gaol, this one from 31 yards put the Storm up 30-27 with 9:39 remaining in the game.
The Titans then drove 38 yards in 8 plays, including a fake punt that picked up 22 yards, down to the Storm 38 taking 5:03 off the clock but stalled and turned the ball over on downs.
Skyview now up 3 with 4:39 to go in the game was looking to run off some clock with Parker Henry runs. Henry moved the Storm down to the Titans 43 in just a few plays. Then McDonagh hit Reiley Henderson on a screen pass to the left and looked as though he was bout to go out of bounds. However, Henderson just hit the sidelines and was gone, sprinting the rest of the way untouched for the 43 yard touchdown to put Skyview up 37-27 with just 2:14 to go in the game.
The excitement was not done however. Union drove 78 yards in just 6 plays to cut the lead to 37-34. On first and goal from the 5, Humphry-Butler appeared to be sacked, but managed to keep his balance and got the pass off to Zak Browning, who did the rest and scored from 5 yards out with 1:15 in the game.
While my mind flashed back to the old Doc Harris Stadium last season when Jed Barnett’s onside kick was recovered by T.J. Boatright to set up the Titans game winning drive against Camas, this year’s onside kick was uneventful and went about 15 yards right to a waiting Storm player who fell on the ball at their 46, sealing the victory. NBLC!
Overall this was the most exciting GHSL game since last years Union/Camas game and had the same feel as the 2007 Evergreen at Mountain View game when the Plainsmen won 28-27.
With the win Skyview improves to 7-2 on the season and 4-0 in league play. The Storm will host Todd Beamer (4-5) for the preliminary round of the playoffs at Kiggins Bowl next weekend, date and time TBD. Union falls to 7-2 on the season with the loss and 3-1 in league play. The Titnas will travel to #4 Bothell (7-2) Friday for the preliminary round of the playoffs at Pop Keeney Stadium time TBD.

Camas Completes Undefeated Regular Season Outright 3A GSHL Title With 24-13 Win Over Kelso
It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win.
The 9th win of the season for the Papermakers gives them a 9-0 record and the 3A GSHL Championship.
The game looked like it might get out of hand early when Camas jumped out to an early 14-0 lead.
Papermakers QB Logan Grindy hit WR Brent Hill from 15 yards out for the touchdown, then Hill returned a Kelso fumble 13 yards for another score on the Hilanders next possession.
That’s when the dog fight began.
Kelso gave the Papermakers all they could handle, outscoring Camas 13-10 the rest of the game, but it was not enough.
With the win #2 Camas improves to 9-0 on the season and 6-0 in league play. The Papermakers host Rainier Beach (5-4) for the preliminary round of the playoffs at Doc Harris Stadium, date and time TBD. Kelso falls to 6-3 on the season with the loss and 4-2 in league play. Mark Morris Takes 64th Civil War And 2A GSHL Championship With 22-11 Win Over R.A. Long
For the second year in a row, the Civil War was winner-take-all in the 2A GSHL.
For the second year in a row, Mark Morris took it from R.A. Long.
A wild first quarter saw Zach Tackwell of Mark Morris return a fumble 32 yards for touchdown. A Jeremy Wolf 1 yard touchdown run. As well as a 43 yard touchdown pass from Senior R.A. Long QB Austin Wegdahl to Freshman RB Jacob Yordy.
Mark Morris led 14-7 after 1 quarter and the barn burner was on, or was it?
Things settled down after that, and a scoreless 2nd quarter keep the score 14-7 at the half.
The Monarchs then drove 71 yards in over 6 minutes to start the 3rd quarter. Dan Feeney’s 1 yard touchdown run, along with a 2 point conversion, put Mark Morris up 22-7.
The Lumberjacks could only manage a pair of safeties the rest of the night and fell 22-11 to their cross-town rivals.

Mountain View Dominates Columbia River 61-6 As The Thunder Look To Make Some Noise In The Postseason
It had been a long time since the Mountain View Thunder football team defeated Columbia River.
5880 days to be exact.
Mountain View needed 5 overtimes to beat Columbia River 42-41 at McKenzie Stadium in September of 1994.
Friday night it took significantly less time for the Thunder to roll to their 61-6 win. Thanks to the running clock rule, most of the 3rd quarter and all of the 4th quarter zipped away.
Thunder RB’s P.J. Jones and Sterling Reynolds zipped all over the field, combining for 352 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns.
Jones finished the night with 191 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns, giving him 1,042 rushing yards on the season, enough to lead the 3A GSHL.
Josh Parker took an interception back 60 yards for a score in the 2nd quarter, and TE Ryan Johnson hauled in a 14 yard pass from QB Ran Hansen as well in the 2nd.
Columbia River QB Justin Rinta scored the Chieftains lone touchdown on the night in the 4th quarter. RB Remick Kawawaki was held to just 27 yards on 9 carries and finished 2nd to Jones in rushing yards on the season with 910.
Kawawaki had led Jones in rushing yards entering the night 883-851.
With the win Mountain View improves to 7-2 on the season and 5-1 in league play. The Thunder travel to Timberline (6-3) Friday for the preliminary round of the playoffs. Location and time TBD. Columbia River falls to 5-4 on the season with the loss and 3-3 in league play. The Chieftains season is over.

Heritage Advances To Postseason With 31-21 Win Over Evergreen
Heritage jumped all over Evergreen early, then held on for the 31-21 win, and advanced to the postseason.
The Timberwolves look unstoppable in the 1st quarter vs rival Evergreen.
Heritage QB Jake Dahlberg threw 3 touchdown passes in the first 13 minutes of the game Friday. Meanwhile, Evergreen had only managed to gain 4 total yards of offense in those 13 minutes.
Just before the half Evergreen was able to get on the board and keep the game close at 21-7 when QB Anthony Thomas capped off a 8 play 65 yard drive with a 33 yard touchdown pass to Artem Konkin.
A scoreless 3rd quarter flew by making way for a wild 4th.
Just 5 seconds into the 4th quarter Heritage kicker Garrett Worle’s 22 yard field goal put the Timberwolves up 24-7.
Evergreen then went on a 10 play drive covering 45 yards only to fumble on an attempted reverse pitch. Heritage DL Terrel Quigley came up with the loose ball.
The Plainsmen defense held and forced a 3 and out punt. Evergreen facing a 4th and 9 from their 35 went deep once again as Thomas hit Nemo Beavers down field, and Beavers made several Timberwolves miss on his way for the 65 yard touchdown with 4:58 remaining in the game to cut the score to 24-14.
Heritage recovered the onside kick and quickly went 53 yards in just 3 plays when QB Riley O’Dell, who came in for the injured Dahlberg, took a QB draw 22 yards up the middle for a touchdown, and a 31-14 Heritage lead with 4:01 left in the game.
Evergreen would answer yet again in just 2 plays. Anthony chucked a pass deep from the Heritage 48. The ball appeared to be well under thrown, however Konkin came back and took the ball away from a Heritage defender, broke free and raced into the end zone, making the score 31-21 Heritage.
Yet another failed onside kick was all it took, and Heritage ran out the final 2:50 of the clock for the win.
Starting QB Jake Dahlberg had 283 passing yards and 120 rushing before he left the game in the 3rd quarter.
With the win Heritage improves to 3-6 on the season and 2-2 in league play. The Timberwolves travel to #5 Kentwood (9-0) Friday for the preliminary round of the playoffs. Location and time TBD. Evergreen falls to 1-8 on the season with the loss and 1-3 in league play. The Plainsmen’s season is over.
