2011 Way-Way-Too-Early Pre-Spring Power Rankings – Skyview Looks Poised To Grab 4th Consecutive 4A GSHL Title
Yep, we are still 93 days away from the kick off of the 2011 Washington High School Football season, but we can’t think of a better time to release our Way-Way-Too-Early Pre-Spring Power Rankings! We have looked over all 17 Greater St. Helens League football teams form the 4A, 3A and 2A and ranked our top 10 as we enter Spring practice. We are sure these rankings won’t stay the same all season, let alone remain the same way after Spring practice, but what better way is there to get us all talking about GSHL Football than to rank teams?
GSHL Power Rankings
1 – Skyview (8-3 in 2010)
2 – Camas (11-1)
3 – Union (7-3)
4 – Mountain View (7-3)
5 – Prairie (4-5)
6 – Mark Morris (9-4)
7 – Columbia River (5-4)
8 – R.A. Long (7-3)
9 – Kelso (7-4)
10 – Washougal (5-4)Skyview Looks Poised To Grab 4th Consecutive 4A GSHL Title
1

Skyview Storm Skyview will be looking for a 4th consecutive 4A Greater St. Helens League Championship in 2011 and their 7th straight trip to the post season as Steve Keizer enters his 8th year as the Strom’s Head Coach. They bring back 7 All-GSHL players from last years squad that went 8-3 and lost to Auburn 28-21 at Kiggins Bowl in the first round of the 4A WIAA state football playoffs. QB Kieran McDonagh, RB Parker Henry and WR Reiley Henderson headline the group of returning stars. Skyview again has a very tough non-conference schedule that includes a pair of out-of-state defending Champions in Sherwood of Oregon and Coeur D’Alene of Idaho. They also host Camas at Kiggins in week 4. So, while an undefeated season may be a lot to ask for, seeing Skyview back in the state Semifinals or beyond is not out of the question in 2011.
2

Camas Papermakers The 2010 Papermakers football team became the first Camas squad in school history to win a WIAA State Playoff Football game. They won their first league title since 2006 and joined the 2005 Papermakers as the only teams in the schools long history to post an undefeated regular season. The Defense also set a new school record for the lowest points allowed per game only allowing 11.3 pts/game over 12 games. When you throw in an Offense that put up 468 pts, you have quite a lot to match in 2011. Camas does loose a large core group of 3 year starters who posted a 24-8 record from 2008-2010. They will look to returning 1st team All-GSHL RB Zack Marshall and QB Tony Gennaro, who started all 3 post-season games last year, to keep the Papermakers train on track. Camas will host Timberline to start the season and will also travel to Skyview for their 2 toughest non-league matchups. Mountain View will come to Doc Harris Stadium week 2 in an early season meeting that just may determine the 3A GSHL Title.
3

Union Titans Union enters the 2011 season once again as a Greater St. Helens League title contender. This years Titans however mark a true transition from the upstart group that took the GSHL by storm from 2007-2009. None of this years team was in high school when the 2007 Titans opened the new school. With all that being said, this years Titans should be a lot like those Titans. A healthy Brandon Brody-Heim looks to be ready to step in and be the next Union RB to dominate the league. QB Kaben Humphrey-Buttler is back along with WR’s Gabe Rego, Tanner Nelson and Tre Christian. The Titans Offense averaged 33.7 pts per game and came up just 3 pts short of claiming their 3rd straight league title. On Defense is where Union will see the biggest need for the younger players to step up. Gone are 6 of the Titans front 7, including 5 All-GSHL players. The lone returner, Senior DL Bryson Page, will have to lead the young front as they look to once again make a deep playoff run this fall. For the 2nd year in a row, Union will open the season playing the same team who ended their previous years post season run. Union fell 42-21 at Bothell in the preliminary round of last years 4A playoffs, and this year, the Titans will kick off the season up at Pop Keeney Stadium. A week 9 matchup at Kiggins with 3-time defending league champ Skyview should once again determine the 4A GSHL.
4

Mountain View Thunder While spending most of the 2010 season flying under the radar, Mountain View managed to tie the school record for regular season wins with 7. While they weren’t able to make the deep playoff runs of the 2001 & 2002 Thunder, they did take a huge step in the right direction following 3 straight 5-4 seasons. Senior RB Sterling Reynolds will make the transition from the teams #2 RB to their featured back as he looks to improve on his 735 yds rushing and 12 TD. Heritage transfer Riley O’Dell should take the pressure off the Thunder run game in 2011. O’Dell passed for 1737 yds and 9 TD last year in just 5 starts. Don’t look for Mountain View to have any more game in which they only throw the ball 3 times all game this season. Thunder Senior DL Ryan Johnson will look to again anchor a Defense that only allowed 23 pts in their last 5 regular season games. Look for Johnson to also improve on his 162 receiving yds and 3 TD with the improvement in the passing game. League games at Camas and at Kelso along with a home tilt with Columbia River will be key to the Thunder’s title hopes.
5

Prairie Falcons The “Magic Number” for Prairie is 5. Not that they are ranked #5 in our way-way-too-early pre-spring power rankings, but that they are looking for that ever elusive 5th win. The last time Prairie had a 5 win season was the 1997 Falcons team that went 6-4. 2010 made a complete unlucky 13 straight losing seasons for Prairie. The 2011 Falcons are again set up quite nicely on Offense with the return of QB Colin Seitz, and WR’s Jesse Zalk, Ansel Cecil and Tyler Vea. All 4 will be Seniors and were 3A All-GSHL picks in 2010. The big question for Prairie will be on Defense where a young group of guys led by Junior DB Colton Prestwich and the trio of 2-way players Zalk/Cecil/Vea. The Falcons D gave up 255 points last season, working out to 28.3 pts/game. The Offense scored 25.8 pts/game and may best that number this season. With league games at Camas, at Mountain View and at Columbia River on the schedule, Prairie Defense, not their high octane Offense might determine weather they get that 5th win.
6

Mark Morris Monarchs With the Monarchs back-to-back 2A Greater St. Helens League titles in 2009 and 2010, Mark Morris equaled the schools league titles dating back to 1980. If they want to win a third consecutive championship, they will have to do it by replacing a lot of talented players. But wait, didn’t we say that prior to last year? Yep. The 2009 Monarchs graduated 13 players who earned All-GSHL honors and that didn’t hinder the 2010 squad from repeating as 2A GSHL Champs and even going 1 game deeper into the playoffs as they reached the Tacoma Dome and the Semifinals. This year, Mark Morris will have to replace 10 seniors who earned All-GSHL honors. It helps when you have 6 All-GSHL players back led by Senior RB Nikko Asbell and Senior OL Shane Kelly. Senior DL Brandon Roth will anchor a Defense that only allowed 12.75 pts/game in league last year. The Monarchs again have a brutal non-league schedule with road games at 4A Heritage, 3A Kelso and defending Oregon 3A state champs Rainier along with a tough home game vs Black Hills member River Ridge. A possible wide open 2A GSHL in 2011 could mean all 4 league games will be dog fights.
7

Columbia River Chieftains From 1997-2009 Columbia River only failed to reach the post season once. The 2011 River squad won’t be looking to make this missing the post season thing a habit. Their core group of young players led by Junior RB Remick Kawawaki and Junior QB Clayton Frank will have to overcome the loss of 7 All-GSHL Seniors to do so. Kawawaki is the 3A Greater St. Helens League’s top returning rusher. The Chieftains will host 4A Battle Ground and Skyview with a road trip to 2A Hockinson in their non-league schedule which is spread out amongst their league games. Both Camas and Prairie travel to Chieftain Stadium in league play while an early road trip to Kelso and a week 9 game at Mountain View may make or break River’s post season hopes.
8

R.A. Long Lumberjacks As one of the oldest high schools in the state, R.A. Long has a rich tradition of winning football. Unfortunately most of that tradition was before the WIAA started the playoff system in 1973. The Lumberjacks had only qualified for the post season twice from 1973-2007, yet the new and improved Jacks are now riding a 3 year streak that includes the school’s only post season win in 2009. The last 2 Civil War games with rival Mark Morris have had the 2A Greater St. Helens League Championship on the line, a first in the 50+ year rivalry. However after finishing 2nd in the 2A GSHL both years, R.A. Long is ready to get over that hump. They will have to do it with a young group of players led by Junior TE Eric Rosellini and Sophomore RB/WR Jacob Yordy on Offense. Junior QB Eric Rosellini will also see competition from Sophomore QB Ryan Peerboom to see who will run the R.A. Long Pistol Offense. On Defense, Rosellini and fellow DB Senior Trey Solon are the teams top returning tacklers. Another challenging non-league schedule featuring home games with 3A Hudson’s Bay and Centralia and road games at Elama and Defending Oregon 3A State Champions Rainier should prepare the Jacks for a wide open 2A GSHL.
9

Kelso Hilanders Last season Kelso reached the First Round of the WIAA playoffs for the first time since the 2004 Hilanders advanced to the state Semifinals. Kelso has not qualified for the 16-team state bracket in consecutive years since they made 4 straight from 1986-1989. Kelso will have to accomplish that feat with just one returning All-GSHL player in Senior DB Slate Miller. A trio of QB prospects in Senior Trevor Feeney and Junior’s Aaron Adams and Cobi Johnson will battle for the 2011 starting spot despite none of them having thrown a single pass last year. Along with being the top returning defender, Miller and Junior RB Taylor Radcliffe are the only returning Hilanders who scored touchdowns in 2010. At least the schedule will be kind to the Hilanders as Columbia River, Mountain View and Camas all have to head up to Schroeder Field for league games.
10

Washougal Panthers Just 2 years removed from their 0-9 2008 season, the Washougal Panthers have a legitimate shot at winning their first league championship since 1999. Washougal’s Offense averaged 27.6 pts/game in their 5 wins helping them to their first winning season since 2006. Senior QB Colton Sullivan is the 2A Greater St. Helens League’s top returning QB, while dual threat Senior RB Sam O’Hara is both the 2A GSHL’s top returner in rush yds and receiving yds. On Defense Senior DL Tyler Purkeypyle and Senior DB Caleb Howard will look to improve a Panthers Defense that allowed 194 LESS points then the winless 2008 team.

Thursday, bleacherreport.com released their list of the 1 key player on each of the 122 Division 1 college football teams.
Former Evergreen QB Bobby Cowan was listed as the most important player on the Idaho Vandals 2011 football team.
Cowan was an All-WAC Punter last season as a Sophomore and gave the Vandals a huge advantage in field position when he averaged 45.14 yards per punt.
Union RB/LB Brandon Brody-Heim #33 On Rivals Top 100 Washington Prep Football 2012 Prospect Ranking

Union RB/LB Brandon Brody-Heim finished as the 4A GSHL's 3rd leading rusher in 2010 with 746 rushing yards and 10 TD's and was also selected as GSHLFootball.com 4A All-League 1st Team DB - Photo by Miller Lowe
Dirk Knudsen of WashingtonPreps.com just released 26-35 of the top 100 Washington football players for the class of 2012, and Union RB/LB Brandon Brody-Heim is ranked #33.
Troy Polamalu style player. Nailed a 105 SPARQ Rating and won the Hawaii Nike NFTC MVP. He is a terrific RB but it is defense where that crazy look in his eye pays off.
Dirk Knudsen - washingtonpreps.com
Brody-Heim is the 4th rated Running Back in the state behind KeiVarae Russell of Mariner (#3 overall), Chevy Walker of Eastside Catholic (#21 overall) and Levonte Littlejohn of Lakes (#24 overall).
“Brandon has worked extremely hard to prepare for the season,” said Union head football coach Cale Piland. “He’s also the type of athlete who understands that pre-season rankings, whether they are in regards to teams or individuals, really don’t mean a whole lot. It is a nice recognition, but ultimately, what is done on the field in the fall is what matters. He is very motivated to perform at a high level.”
Entering his third season of varsity football, Brody-Heim has plenty of experience, but it’s his leadership Piland is excited about.
“Brandon does a good job of leading by example,” he said. “I expect, as a senior, he will be one of our vocal leaders this season as well.”
This season Brandon will be making the move on defense form Safety to Linebacker. Piland feels that he will make an huge impact where ever he is lined up, weather it be Safety, Linebacker, Running Back or even as a Slot Receiver.
As Union High School enters it’s 5th season, the Titans have their eye on the school’s 3rd league title and the first at the 4A level.
“As a team, we’ve had a very successful offseason so far. We’re excited to get out on the field in June and see how we are going to develop,” said Piland.

Union QB Kaben Humphrey-Butler Among Top Performers At Barton Football 2011 Washington Marketing Workout In Bothell

Union QB Kaben Humphrey-Butler was a 4A Coaches All-GSHL 2nd Team QB last season as a Junior
Last Saturday at Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell, over 150 players from across the Northwest attended the Barton Football 2011 Washington Marketing Workout.
Chris Fetters of Scout.com’s Evergreen State Prep website put out his list of top performers Sunday.
Union QB Kaben Humphrey-Butler was listed as one of 3 Quarterbacks in the 9 offensive skill players.
Offense:
- WR Connor Black – Wenatchee HS
- WR Isaiah Brandt-Sims – Wenatchee HS (2014)
- QB Wyatt Houston – Horizon Christian HS (OR) (2013)
- QB Kaben Humphrey-Butler – Union HS
- QB Sefo Liufau – Bellarmine Prep HS (2013)
- QB Alex Matthews – Lake Oswego HS (OR)
- WR Devonte Oliver-Haley – Rogers HS
- TE Caleb Smith – Kentridge HS
- RB/DB Jordan Visarraga – Willamette HS (OR)
According to the Barton Training website, “The Marketing Workout is designed to let each athlete receive lots of repetitions at each position. The Workout is for all positions, both offensively and defensively and this year including Kickers & Punters! D2, D3 and NAIA coaches will be at the camp to view players. DI and D1AA coaches can not attend per NCAA rules.”
Last season Humphry-Butler took over as the Titans starting QB in week 2 after game 1 starter Tanner Nelson was injured in the Titans loss to Bellevue at Qwest Field.
Over his 9 starts, Humphry-Butler led union to a 7-2 record passing for 1,175 yards and 8 touchdowns. He also ran for another 115 yards and 4 more touchdowns and was selected by the 4A GSHL Coaches as their 2nd Team All-League QB.

7 Players And 1 Coach Will Represent The GSHL In The 2011 3A-4A East-West All-Star Football Game In Spokane

As a 3 year starter at Camas, Papermakers QB Logan Grindy passed for 5,929 yards and 60 touchdowns while being voted 1st Team All-League QB all 3 years, and GSHL All-League Offensive Player of the Year twice.
On July 1st at 7 p.m., 68 of Washington’s top graduating senior football players will gather at Roos Field on the campus of Eastern Washington University to compete in the 47th 3A/4A East West All-Star Football Game.
If history really does repeat itself, then this summer’s classic in Cheney (just West of Spokane) Washington should be another great day for the Greater St. Helens League.
In 2009 Evergreen DE Ashton Miller dominated on defense for the East as he racked up 9 tackles, 1.5 sacks and recovered a fumble. Heritage WR Ashton Clark had several catches including a huge 4th down grab to set up the game winning touchdown in the East’s 13-12 win. Read full story.
Last summer the all-star game was again dominated by GSHL players. Union WR Mitch Saylor was named the games MVP after his 7 catches for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns led the way for the East 28-9 victory. Skyview QB Austin Dodge started the game for the East and threw both TD passes to Saylor. Read full story.
This summer 7 GSHL football players will play for the East team as they look to knock off the West squad for a 4th consecutive summer. Along with the players, Camas head football coach Jon Eagle will be an assistant with the East squad.
The Union Titans will again have multiple players playing in the all-state game, making a total of 5 players who were members of the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Titans teams that went 31-6 and make 2 trips to the Tacoma Dome. TE/LB T.J. Boatright and RB/LB Zak Browning will follow last years Titan representatives Taylor Nelson, Mitch Saylor and Nathaniel Penaranda.
“I’m very excited to be selected to play in the state all star game,” said Boatright. “It is an honor to be recognized for all the hard work Zak and myself have put in over our careers.”
Browning was equally excited to play. “It’s a real honor to be selected to play in this year’s all-state football game,” said Browning. “I’ve missed football big time these last 6 months so it should be a lot of fun.”
Boatright and Browning have been playing football on the same team since the 5th grade.
“It will be a blast to go and play with Zak,” said Boatright “It will be our last game together over an 8 year stretch of being on the same team and hopefully we represent Union and Clark County well.”
Browning is also excited to get another game with Boatright. “Having T.J. go with me to play should be lot of fun,” he said. “We’ve been friends since elementry school so it’ll be nice to already have a friend there with me.”
As far as the former Titans to play in the all-state game, both Browing and Boatright know they paved the way.

Zak Browning started 3 years for the Titans helping Union to a 31-6 record and 2 trips to the Tacoma Dome. As a Senior Browning rushed for 1,175 yards and 19 touchdowns and also dominated on defense where he was selected by both the Seattle Times and the Tacoma News Tribune as a 1st Team All-State Linebacker.
“Nathaniel, Taylor and Mitch are some of the best football players I’ve ever played with or against,” said Browning. “They have really started the tradition at Union of producing great football players and to follow in there foot steps and play in the all-state game really means a lot.”
“Nate, Taylor and Mitch all were great friends, players and leaders and I learned a lot from all of them,” said Boatright. “It will be fun to follow in their footsteps and try to bring back a victory like they did.”
Union however is not the only GSHL school to send multiple players to the all-state game in back-to-back years this summer.
Skyview will send WR Karl Graves and K Nick Phillips to Spokane this summer. Last year QB Austin Dodge and DE Dallin Shirley represented the Storm up in Everett.
Phillips, who will be playing football at Minot State University in North Dakota, is excited to get to play again in Washington before heading East.
“It will be a good experience playing in one of my last local games,” said Phillips. “I hope to see many other GSHL athletes over there representing Southwest Washington.”
Kelso LB Jared O’Niel will be the second O’Niel brother to play in this game in as many years. Older brother OL Justin was a member of the 2010 East team.
Camas QB Logan Grindy won’t be alone as Papermakers head coach Jon Eagle will be an assistant coach on the East team. Eagle will be coaching in his 2nd all-state game this summer. After leading Evergreen to the 1995 AAA Semifinals, Eagle was also an assistant coach in 1996. Former Battle Ground coach Jim Sharkey will head up the East squad after he led his Ferris Saxons to the 4A state championship this fall.
Prairie WR Avi Slifer rounds out the group of 7 players from the Greater St. Helens League.
The 7 GSHL players come in 1 short of last years 8 and are 2 more than the 5 sent in 2009. However we originally had 11 players scheduled to make the trip.
1st team AP All-State DL Odin Coe was picked for the team but had to back out when Montana State told him not to play in the game. Fellow Papermaker 2010 GSHLFootball.com All Level All-Star 1st DB Addison Owen was also selected to play but won’t be making the trip. Owen will be playing for the University of Montana this fall.
Like Camas, a pair of Skyview football players also won’t be making the trip. Honorable Mention AP All-State WR/DB Ellis Henderson is coming off an injured shoulder he suffered in the Storm’s final game of the season. Honorable Mention AP All-State OL Cody Fields had to back out as well.
“It’s really disappointing to not be able to play in the state game because I was looking forward to it, but there’s just not enough time before I leave,” said Fields. “I know all the GSHL players will go and represent us well, and it tears me apart to not go join them.”
Fields, who was accepted into the Merchant Marine Academy where he will continue playing football, will already be at the Academy when the game is played.
“But what makes me feel better is the fact that I will be playing football at the Academy in the summer, so I won’t have any shortage of football myself,” Fields continued. “I wish the best of luck to all the players in the game, and apologize for not joining them on the field.”

For those of you who may still be wondering why our league, out of Southwest Washington, is part of the East team, the West team is simply Seattle and those North of Seattle, the rest, Tacoma down to Vancouver and everything East of the Cascade Mt Range is on the East. This is done to create an even number of schools to choose from for each team.
