Portland State Offers Skyview QB Kieran McDonagh And Union QB Kaben Humphrey-Butler

Union QB Kaben Humphrey-Butler passed for for 1175 yards and 8 touchdowns while running in 4 more last season which was enough to be voted 2nd Team All-GSHL QB. Photo by Dirk Knudsen
Monday the Portland State Vikings extended 2 scholarship offers to a pair of Greater St. Helens League Quarterbacks.
Skyview QB Kieran McDonagh and Union QB Kaben Humphrey-Butler both received offers from the local Big Sky Conference 1-AA school.
Humphrey-Butler, who also starts in the Titans secondary, was offered as an Athlete. Last season he was voted by the GSHL 4A coaches to the 2nd team All-GSHL Team as a QB after he passed for 1175 yards and 8 touchdowns and also ran for another 4 touchdowns.
“Kaben Humphrey-Butler was actually the fastest QB at the SPARQ event and his athletic frame is apparent to those watching,” said Dirk Knudsen; Regional Analyst for Rivals.com and editor of WashingtonPreps.com.
Kaben himself was more than excited about the offer.
“My thoughts were kinda everywhere. I was excited to know that I got an offer, I just kind of had to soak it all in at first,” said Humphrey-Butler who has been working out with John Charles of Air One Quarterback Academy all offseason. ”
Humphrey-Butler could end up at any number of positions according to Knudsen.
“He throws a nice deep ball and is another guy who can run when he wants to. He is being recruited as an athlete at P.S.U. according to our sources and while he still looks at that QB role as his primary role he knows that he may end up on the defensive side. He played WR and Safety at the P.S.U. skills camp this past Monday and looked to be in the top group at all positions he played,” added Knudsen.
McDonagh is no stranger to playing multiple positions either. The 6’2 225 QB started at Linebacker for the Storm the first half of last season before taking over at QB. Despite not starting the entire season, McDonagh was voted by both GSHLFootball.com and the Coaches as the 4A GSHL All-League 1st Team QB after he passed for 1545 yards and 24 touchdowns.
“McDonagh has consistently stood with the best QB’s at the events we have seen him at,” said Knudsen. “He has great arm strength and better size then many other QB’s in the Northwest. He has also proven that he can run when he wants to and that is an added plus for him. The P.S.U. offer might be a perfect fit for him as a QB is a system where he can have those options on every given play.”

West Too Much For East, Wins 2011 Earl Barden All-Star Football Classic 23-14
Despite coming back from a 13-0 halftime deficit to take a 14-13 lead in the 4th quarter, the East All-Stars could not hang on and lost to the West squad 23-14 in the 2011 Earl Barden All-Star Football Classic.
West WR Kyle Warner from Tumwater hauled in 2 first half touchdowns. The first on a 20 yard halfback pass from Matt Friese of Willapa Valley on a halfback pass in the 1st quarter. Later in the 2nd quarter, Warner caught a 10 yard touchdown from Onalaska QB Dalton Ritchey.
The East team joined the party midway through the 3rd quarter when QB Sawyer Bardwell of Colville found Jake Reynolds of East Valley (Spokane) down the sidelines for a 45 yard touchdown pass. Midway through the 4th the East went up 14-13 when they capped off a 85 yard drive with a Bardwell 3 yard QB sneak.
The lead was short lived however, when a pair of long passes to Warner set up the West for a go ahead field goal. Sean McNealley of Montesano kicked a 26 yard FG to put the West back up 16-14. When the East squad was unable to cross midfield on their next possession, the West took advantage. While milking the clock, Ritchey scrambled around on a 4th and 5 play and found daylight to his left and ran in for the game clinching 19 yard touchdown run with just 1:07 left in the game.
The East squad made one last push, but turned the ball over on downs after reaching the West 27, falling to the West squad 23-14.

As a Senior in 2010 Mark Morris LB/RB Dan Feeney was selected by the AP as a 2A Honorable Mention RB, and was also selected by The Daily News as their All-Area Team Most Valuable Player
The past 3 days approximately 80 of the states top small-school recently graduated high school football players have been preparing for tomorrows Earl Barden East-West All-Star Classic in Yakima.
Included on the 40 man East roster are 3 Longview standouts. R.A. Long Lumberjack OL/DL Julio Barrera joins a pair of Mark Morris Monarchs, LB/RB Dan Feeney and TE/DE Zach Tackwell.
Today wraps up both teams 4 days of practice before Saturday’s 1 p.m kickoff at Zaepfel Stadium, located on the campus of Eisenhower High School on the West side of Yakima.
Despite both teams being comprised of players who have mostly never played together, Saturday’s game won’t look like your average spring scrimmage.
“Practice is a lot quicker pace than what we had at Mark Morris,” said Dan Feeny, the 2010 2A Coaches GSHL Offensive Player of the Year. “Everyone is just so experienced.”
Our 3 Greater St. Helens League representatives have plenty of experience and awards won to bring to the table. Feeney was named to the AP 2A All-State Team as an Honorable Mention RB, GSHLFootball.com All Level All-Star 1st Team LB, The Daily News All-Area Team’s Most Valuable Player. the 2A Coaches All-GSHL Offensive Player of the Year and a 2-time GSHLFootball.com Player of the Week. Teammate Zach Tackwell was a The Daily News All-Area Team 1st Team DL and the 2A Coaches All-GSHL Defensive Player of the Year. R.A. Long’s Julio Barrera was a GSHLFootball.com All Level All-Star 2nd Team OL, The Daily News All-Area Team 1st Team OL and a 2A Coaches All-GSHL 1st Team OL.
The players have not had to practice the whole day in the Central Washington 90+ heat each day.
“It’s way hotter here then Longview,” added Feeney. “We have been relaxing and talking to other players and going too the movies. Everyone is having fun. We have quickly come together as a new team.”
Zaepfel Stadium is located at 702 South 40th Avenue in Yakima Washington (Eisenhower High School). The game starts at 1 p.m. We will be there taking photos and shooting some video. We encourage all of you to make the short (less than 200 mile) trip to Yakima to support our boys!
