Game Recap – Skyview 38 Lake Stevens 14

Skyview DL Riley Bockmier had a pair of sacks and recovered a fumble helping the Storm to a 38-14 victory over #8 Lake Stevens at the Tacoma Dome in the 4A Semifinals.
Unlike last week, the Skyview Storm did not need a gigantic second half comeback to capture a playoff victory. No, Saturday night inside the Tacoma Dome it was all Skyview as the Storm rolled to a 38-14 4A Semifinals victory over previously unbeaten Lake Stevens.
Skyview displayed a complete team effort in dismantling the #8 ranked Vikings. The defense made the first big play of the night when DL Dylan Bratlie recovered a fumble setting up Skyview on the Vikings side of the 50. It did not take long for Skyview to move down the short field and get on the scoreboard with a Parker Henry 1 yard touchdown run, his 31st rushing touchdown of the season. Later in the quarter the Storm looked to go up 14-0 when Reiley Henderson took a screen pass from QB Kieran McDonagh in for a score, however the play was called back on a very questionable holding call. Still, Skyview led 7-0 after 1 quarter and appeared to be in complete control of the game. In the second quarter McDonagh continued his surgical like precision as he carved up the Vikings defense with perfect passes to WR’s Forrest Russell, Mo Morrision and Reiley Henderson. McDonagh also made several plays with his legs, rushing for big gains as well as avoiding pressure and keeping pass plays alive, plays he then turned into big gains down the field. Henderson got his touchdown in the second quarter on a 7 yard pass from McDonagh, when the Storm lined up in their jumbo set and faked the run to Henry, only to have McDonagh hit Henderson on a fade in the left corner of the end zone. On their next possession McDonagh scored his first of 2 rushing touchdowns, this one a 26 yard run in which he made several Vikings defenders miss him along the way. Up 21-0 Skyview looked like they were going to go up four scored before the half when Russell took a pass from McDonagh up the right sidelines, however Lake Stevens stripped the ball from Russell and returned it out near mid field, then drove the short distance and got on the board with when QB Jake Nelson threw a 14 yard pass to WR Brady Pahukoa. Despite the Strom’s turnover, they still appeared fully in control up 21-7 at halftime.
In the second half, Skyview’s defense continued to shine. LB Jabari Marshall either made, or was in on just about every tackle and the unit as a whole just always appeared to have someone in position to make the play to force a Vikings punt. Then, the McDonagh-led offense keep their foot on the gas, adding two more scores in the third quarter, a 1 yard McDonagh run and a 16 yard pass from McDonagh to Russell. Taking the 35-7 lead into the forth quarter, Skyview looked to RB Parker Henry to run out the clock and secure their spot in next weekends 4A State Championship game. Henry, who was obviously the Vikings number one priority, finished the night with 77 yards rushing on 19 carries and the one touchdown. McDonagh passed for 339 yards and two scores and added 65 yards rushing and two more touchdowns, for a total of 404 yards of total offense and 4 touchdowns. Russell finished the game with 10 catches for 144 yards and a touchdown, while Henderson 5 of his own for 60 yards. Mo Morrison only had 2 grabs on the night, but both were huge plays that added up to 84 yards. Hayden Schuh, added the final points of the night for Skyview when he kicked a 31 yard field goal, giving Skyview the 38-14 victory.
Skyview improves their record to 11-2 on the season with the win. The Storm will play Skyline (10-3) at The Tacoma Dome Saturday, 7:30 p.m. in the Finals of the WIAA 4A State Playoffs.

Game Recap – O’Dea 21 Camas 13

Camas WR Jonathan Warner (#1) celebrates with teammates Zach Eagle (#2) and Connor Maloney after his 55 yard TD catch from QB Tonny Gennaro in the 3rd quarter. Camas lost to O'Dea 21-13 in the 3A Semifinals at the Tacoma Dome.
After a promising start to the Papermakers first ever trip to the WIAA Semifinals, Camas ended up losing to #3 O’Dea 21-13 at the Tacoma Dome. Camas appeared to be the better football team for much of the first quarter. The Papermakers defense held O’Dea to a pair of 3 and outs in the opening frame while the offense put together a pair of nice drives.RB Zack Marsahll ran for 51 yards on just 5 carries but would leave the game late in the quarter with a dislocated thumb. An early 2nd quarter 3-0 lead following a Roldan Alconbendas 22 yard field goal quickly slipped away when O’Dea QB Pierre Ledorze hit Taryll Calhoun on a 64 yard touchdown pass that appeared to be thrown to another Irish player. The next O’Dea possession was an 86 yard drive that eat up most just about the rest of the half and was capped off when Ledorze dove in from 1 yard out, pushing past the line on his second effort. Camas found new life early in the 3rd quarter when on the 3rd play of the quarter, QB Tonny Gennaro hit a streaking Jonathan Warner on a 55 yard touchdown pass to cut the Irish lead to 14-10. Warner had lined up at TB next to Gennaro and had a clean release down the seam and was never coveted. The Papermakers got inside the O’Dea 10 soon there after when Gennaro completed a 30 yard pass to WR John Payne. However Camas went backwards from there and had to settle for a 38 yard Alconbendas field goal. With O’Dea still leading by a point at 14-13 they began to eat up the clock. Their drive spilled over into the 4th quarter when RB Jomari Brooks scored from 30 yards out to push the Irish lead to 8 points at 21-13. Camas’ final possession was short as the Papermakers wen 3 and out and had to punt the football back to O’Dea, they would never get the ball back. O’Dea held the football for 13:03 of the games final 14:14 never allowing Camas to make a comeback. RB Nate Beasley rushed for 76 yards on 9 carries filling in for the injured Marshall. Gennaro passed for 200 yards and the touchdown to Warner in the 3rd quarter. Warner finished the game with 4 catches for 76 yards. Zach Eagle also had 76 receiving yards on 5 catches, most of which came in the first half when the Papermakers were moving the football with ease. The O’Dea trio of backs Jayshawn Jordan, Jomari Brooks and Tatum Taylor ran for 163 yards on 31 carries. Jordan and Brooks each ran for 68 yards.
Camas falls to 11-2 on the season with the loss. The Papermakers season is over.

Winner Faces Woodinville or Skyline in the State Championship Game

Skyview Safety Mo Morrison is known for his big hits on defense (as they saying goes "Don't go down 25th Street because it ends in a dead end.") but the 5'11 215lb Senior has also caught 8 passes for 110 yards and 3 touchdowns in the post season. Photo by Dave Scott
Notable: Seattle Times poll has Lake Stevens winning with a 55%-45% vote…Same poll for other semifinal game has Woodinville just 6 votes ahead of Skyline, with almost 600 votes cast…Lake Stevens is ranked 124th in the nation and 3rd in the state overall by MaxPreps.com…According to Maxpreps.com, Vikings superstar QB Jake Nelson is ranked 9th in the state in total yardage, 9th in passing yards and 19th in rushing, and 163rd in the nation in total yardage…Last week against #3 Eastlake, Nelson had 251 yards passing, 3 td passes and 74 rushing…The week prior against Olympia in the 1st round, Nelson had 59-yard run on third-and-45 at the Lake Stevens 10 with just one minute left and Lake Stevens trailing. That led to the winning 26-yard pass to Gasca with 12 seconds left for the 21-17 victory…Vikings WR/Safety Brady Pahukoa (6’4”, 205) is ranked 9th overall in the state in tackles per game (8.8)…Washingtonpreps.com’s Ryan Hockman (a former All-SEC QB) said QB Jake Nelson is the best he has seen in the state this year for his class. See the article about this here. Seattle Times article about Lake Stevens star receiver, Christian Gasca. Lake Stevens has rushed for a solid 1,863 yards on the season, or 155 yards per game and 31 TDs…Parker Henry alone has rushed for 2083 yards and 30 TDs…Skyview has scored more points in its 3 playoff games (123) than Evergreen, Heritage, Fort Vancouver, Hudson’s Bay, Kelso and R.A. Long scored in their entire seasons…Skyview QB Kieran McDonagh has passed for 197 more yards than Lake Stevens QB Jake Nelson this season (2283 to 2086) with 1 more touchdown and one less interception (22 TD 3 INT to 21 TD 4 INT)…McDonagh has passed for 923 yards and 8 touchdowns in Skyview’s 3 post season games….RB Parker Henry has only been held to under 100 rushing yards once this season, back in week 7 he had 70 yards on 7 carries and 2 TD in his Storm’s 61-9 win at Evergreen…Skyview has averaged 38.1 pts/game over the 10 game win streak and has scored at least 31 in all 10 of those games…They have averaged 41.0 pts/game in the post season…Skyview’s two loses are to Coeur d’Alene of Idaho who won the Idaho 5A State Championship last week and Sherwood of Oregon who will play in the Oregon 5A State Championship game next weekend, both Coeur d’Alene and Sherwood were also state champs in 2o1o…
Seattle Times Columnist Mason Kelly’s Prediction:
Pick: Lake Stevens, 28-21
“Lake Stevens took down No. 3 Eastlake in quarterfinals. It’s hard to see Vikings slowing down in semis.”
Tacoma News Tribune Columnist Doug Pacey’s Prediction:

Skyview RB Parker Henry ran for 235 yards and 4 second half touchdowns last week leading the Storm to a 42-17 win over #1 Bellarmine Prep at Kiggins Bowl. Photo by Dave Scott
Pick: Skyview 31, Lake Stevens 27
“Player-of-the-Year candidates lead the Storm and Vikings. Skyview RB Parker Henry gashed top-ranked Bellarmine Prep for 230 yards and four TDs in a 42-17 quarterfinals win. Henry has rushed for a Class 4A-leading 2,084 yards. Skyview can air it out, too. QB Kieran McDonagh has thrown for 2,283 yards, 22 TDs and 3 interceptions. Lake Stevens QB Jake Nelson provided the highlight of the year when he converted a third-and-43, scrambling through the Olympia defense, and on the next play fired the game-winning touchdown pass to WR Christian Gasca in the final minute of the first-round game. The Vikings proved they’re no fluke by throttling third-ranked Eastlake in the quarterfinals, 50-21. Lake Stevens might need more of Nelson’s magic against the Storm.”

Coach Kizer’s general impressions of Lake Stevens: “They are very efficient on offense with 3 very good receivers and a great QB, he is their engine. Defensively, they are schematically very solid. They are a well coached team and look very prepared for every opponent they have played.”What team at any level Lake Stevens reminds him of: “Lake Stevens reminds us of the Heritage teams with Grayson at QB. You could do a great job covering up the receivers and get a good pass rush, yet he would find a way to make a play and gain 15 yards. Jake Nelson is the Garrett Grayson of their team.”
What/who concerns him most: “Their QB is very, very good! They have 3 very good receivers that you have to account for. Their OL is very good in pass protection.”
Thoughts on his team going to the Dome for the first time ever: “It is very exciting for our kids especially our seniors to achieve a goal that was set when they were freshman. Even though we went farther than 129 miles in ’09, the dome is special. Not every father can tell their kids they played in the Tacoma Dome, our kids will be able to do that, it’s pretty awesome.”
Comparisons of this year’s team to some of his great teams from the past – You don’t like to compare your teams year to year, however the leadership and sacrifice of this team sets them apart from every other team I have coached.
Thoughts regarding what has come as a surprise this season despite high expectations - We knew we had a great core, the pleasant surprise has been the guys who have stepped up and become major contributors. Hayden Shuh began the season as a DB and is now starting at LB for us. After being hurt most of last season, Spencer Miles has made some huge catches for us and has been a great perimeter blocker. Kieran McDonagh patience in the pocket and authority when running the ball has been huge. Reiley Henderson has become one of the states top CB’s after only playing offense last year.
How games against Sherwood, CDA and Camas prepared them for Union and the playoffs - It gave us opportunities to face adversity in a game. It showed our guys that if their technique is bad or their effort is poor, they will not be successful against a state-caliber team.
On keeping the players on the right track after the 0-2 start – It really wasn’t that hard, our senior leaders took care of most of that. We spent most of our efforts keeping the student body confident.
On abandoning the spread and going to the jumbo midway through the 3rd quarter against Bellarmine Prep – It doesn’t take a genius to give the ball to Parker Henry. They were consistently outnumbering us in the box when we were in our spread and we didn’t take advantage of some opportunities we had to make them pay early in the game. So when we had a 3rd and 1 and we got into our Jumbo set and got 10 yards, we just stuck with it. As far as doing what we do, we kept our same fast tempo and still got the ball on the perimeter a little, but we saw that if we could get a hat for a hat our OL would win.
What reminds him of the 2006 and 2009 teams and what is different - We have much more depth than we did in ’06 and we are more dynamic on both sides of the ball than we were in ’09. The senior leadership of this class is the best I have seen in 30 years of coaching.

Lake Stevens Head Coach’s thoughts regarding Skyview:
General impressions – “Skyview is a big and physical team. Very impressive on film. Along with the size you can see they have some good overall team speed, and that they are very well coached.”
What and/or who concerns him most – “We have the same concerns I’m sure every team that faces Skyview has, they are very balanced. First and foremost is Parker Henry. Very impressive running back. He has nice mix of speed and power. Then, the QB Kieran McDonagh is also a big strong kid. He shows great awareness in the pocket and can use his feet very effectively. Both those guys behind that o-line makes the offense of Skyview extremely difficult to prepare for, Defensively they are very disciplined, and they hit you in the mouth. I’m very impressed by the LB #33 Jabari Marshall, he always is around the ball. Also, the secondary they have is fast and a group that likes to come up and hit you.”
Keys to winning – “We need to take care of the ball, move our feet, and tackle well. Pretty much the same things we always need to do. It’ll take a great effort by our guys to get this done.”
Thoughts on his team’s performance in the playoffs so far, including the surprising blowout of Eastlake - “The first half of the Eastlake game was a lot of fun. Anytime every part of your team is clicking is what you strive for. We had it going on offense, defense, and our special teams made some very big plays for us that we were able to take advantage of.. We got off to a fast start and the pressure on Eastlake took them out of their game a little. The same things we need to have happen this Saturday. We need to keep getting better each week, and this week is no different. I feel that’s the best quality of this team, they work hard to improve something each and very week we play.”
Players receiving college interest - “Our QB Jake Nelson is getting some interest from colleges. Mostly smaller schools like Central, Idaho, and Eastern. If he continues to perform at the level he’s been at I think other schools will get in the mixas well. We have a few other guys getting some interest too: both our WR’s, Christian Gasca and Brady Pahukoa. One of our lineman, Cody Tupen, is getting some interest from schools In addition, our LB Korey Young is getting a ton of inquiry now that he’s recovered from a pretty severe knee injury. Most of the colleges asking are Div. 2 and NAIA size schools for those guys.”
Thoughts on what makes his team a semifinal-worthy team - “Our team is very close and hard working. They like being around each other, and competing together. The work these guys put in over the summer is paying off, and they don’t want the ride to end. Our seniors are a great group of young men, and Lake Stevens has been blessed to have them. Not just our football program, but the community as a whole benefits from the leadership and hard work these guys show every day. The younger kids in LS look up to these guys, and they are tremendous role models on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.”
