Game Recap – Skyline 38 Skyview 7

Skyview Senior DB Mo Morrison pickes off this pass from Skyline QB Max Brown in the 3rd quarter of the WIAA 4A Finals at the Tacoma Dome. Skyview lost to the Spartans 38-7. Photo by Dave Scott
After outscoring their post season opponents 161-55 and rattling off 11 straight victories and a trip to the WIAA 4A Finals, the Skyview Storm came up short in their bid for a state title, falling 38-7 to the Skyline Spartans.
Skyline opened the game game by driving 68 yards in only a few plays, but despite entering the Storm 5, Skyline was held to an opening field goal for the games only points of the first quarter.
The Spartan’s Junior QB Max Browne threw for 91 yards in the opening quarter. Skyview’s pass rush was unable to interrupt the Spartans quick passing attack, as Browne took under 3 seconds on most pass plays to deliver his accurate passes.
In the second quarter it was more Browne and the Spartans offense. Skyline RB Damien Greene scored the games first touchdown on a run from 25 yards out to give the Spartans a 10-0 lead. Later, Brown threw a beautiful 35 yard pass to Mason Gregory to put Skyline up 17-0. Skyview appeared to get the break they needed midway through the second quarter when Storm Safety Mo Morrison’s perfectly timed hit on a Spartan receiver resulted in an interception by Hayden Schuh. Skyview picked up a first down, then gained 7 yards on the following first down setting up a 2nd and 3 near the Spartans 30. However Skyview was unable to convert and turned the ball over on downs with 2:22 left in the half. Skyview defensive linemen Riley Bockmier and Willie Lopes each sacked Browne on the next Skyline possession forcing a punt, but Skyview was unable to score before going into the locker room down 17-0.
After trading punts to open the second half, Skyview went on it’s only scoring drive of the game. Starting at their own 46, Skyview QB Kieran McDonagh connected with Spencer Miles for a first down, then followed that up with a 32 yard touchdown pass to a diving Reiley Henderson. Henderson would finish the game with 8 catches for 75 yards and the one touchdown. McDonagah would go 18 of 30 for 150 yards and had the one touchdown to go along with 3 interceptions.
Mo Morrison picked off Browne later in the 3rd quarter, and Skyview again appeared to have some momentum. The Storm picked up 3 first downs and crossed into the Skyline side of the 50, however after taking a sack to set up a 3rd and 20+, McDonagh was picked off by Greene at the Skyline 26 ending what looked like a promising drive late in the 3rd quarter.
Entering the 4th quarter still down just 17-7 Skyview was not out of it, however midway through the final quarter, Spartans RB Jack Velencia (not related to The Columbian’s Paul Velencia) ran in an 11 yard touchdown to extend the Skyline lead back to 17 points at 24-7. Later, with under 3 minutes left in the game, facing a 4th and 9, Browne threw a 33 yard touchdown pass to Trevor Barney to put the Spartans up 31-7. Skyview gave it one last go to put a few more points on the board, however McDonagh was picked off by Valencia who returned it 73 yards for a touchdown making the final score 38-7.
Skyview RB Parker Henry finished the game with just 31 yards rushing on 14 carries. The states leading 4A rusher finished the season with 2192 rushing yards and 31 rushing touchdowns. Henry had played the final 7 games of the season with a leg injury suffered on a late hit he received after scoring a touchdown in Skyview’s 61-9 win at Evergreen in mid October.
Skyline QB Max Brown threw for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns in the win. Brown led the 4A in passing this season with 4034 yards and 45 touchdowns.
Skyview finishes the season at 11-3 and second in the state among 4A schools.
