Tacoma, WashingtonNotable: Seattle Times poll has Skyline winning with a 65%-35% vote (474 votes)…Forrest Russell, Zach Wallace and William Lopez have been added to the list of Washingtonpreps.com’s top junior recruits (below)… Skyline MLB Peyton Pelluer (jr.) is the son of former WSU linebacker Scott Pelluer, who played five seasons for the New Orleans Saints, and is the nephew to former UW and Dallas Cowboy QB Steve Pelluer…Skyline QB Max Browne, who was recently named Washington Gatorade Player of the Year, was 1st Team All State Last Year (this year should be a foregone conclusion)…The Spartans have an amazing six different wide receivers with at least 300 yards receiving on the season, and four have just about 500 yards or more…Both Skyline and Skyview opened in 1997, Skyline has won state championships in 2000, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and finished 2nd in 2004 and 2010…Evergreen defeated Skyline 28-14 in the 2004 4A title game…Former Woodland and Battle Ground head football coach Jim Sharkey defeated Skyline last year 24-16 with his Ferris Saxons…Skyline and Skyview both played Issaquah this season, Skyline defeated the Eagles 41-14 in week 4 while Skyview defeated the Eagles 47-17 in week 10…Skyline Junior QB Max Browne leads the state among 4A passers with 3813 passing yards and 43 touchdowns while Skyview Senior RB Parker Henry leads the state among 4A rushers with 2161 rushing yards and 31 rushing touchdowns…Skyline has losses to Bellevue (14-0 3A Washington state champs), Lake Oswego (13-0 6A Oregon Semifinalist) and Eastlake (10-2 4A Washington Quarterfinalist) while Skyview has losses to Coeur d’Alene (12-0 5A Idaho state champs) and Sherwood (13-0 5A Oregon Finalist).
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- How Skyline defends Skyview: While Lake Stevens did a heck of a job selling out against Parker Henry, holding him to a season-worst 4.05 yards per carry on 17 carries, they paid for it allowing Kieran McDonagh to show his arm and legs passing for 339 yards and 2 TDs, and rushing for 65 and another 2 TDs. Will Skyline load up the box like Lake Stevens did or back off and play more of a balanced approach and risk Parker going off (or entering “Beast Mode” like many like to say) like the 2,165-yard rusher has done so well this season? Either way, Skyline has one of the best MLB’s in the state (and one of leaders in state in tackles) in #52 Peyton Pelluer who will be tracking him.
- If Kieran McDonagh will have to come up big again: He hasn’t had to do it often this year because Parker Henry has just been that good, but this Skyline defense is much better than advertised and, much like Skyview’s, has gotten much stronger as the late regular season transitioned through the playoffs. McDonagh only passed (needed to) for 200+ twice in the regular season; however, McDonagh has flat out been on fire in the playoffs, throwing for a combined 1,262 (315.5 per, 68.6% completions) and 10 TDs to just 4 INTs in 4 playoff games.
- Max Browne’s pass protection and effectiveness in the passing game: Woodinville did a great job of getting after Max Browne in the second half of last week’s narrow defeat. Max Browne is widely considered one of the top junior quarterbacks in the entire nation (see his offers etc. below). His 43 touchdown passes are by far the most in the state. He had 50 touchdown passes his sophomore year. Skyview will again have to come up big in the pass rush department like they did against another of the state’s elite, Jake Nelson, last week when they sacked him 5 times. Even if Skyview’s pass rush isn’t dominant, Browne will be facing probably the best secondary he has faced all year, with the likes of Reiley Henderson at corner and the great safety tandem of Mo Morrison and David Garlington. Morrison and Garlington are two of the best at their respective positions in the state. Skyline has a load of effective receivers to account for, so it will be interesting to see who wins the passing game.
- X-Factor for Skyline – Damian Greene: It is natural and is instinctive to describe Skyline in terms of having a great passing game and quarterback like Max Browne, but, as Woodinville found out last week, and as Lake Stevens found out against Skyview, if you pay too much attention to one aspect of a team’s offense, you may just pay for it. Skyview is known for their pick-your-poison, balanced offense. But just when you think you have Skyline figured out as a predominantly passing team, they throw a guy like senior running back Damian Greene (#7) at you. Green, the son of former Seattle Seahawk receiver Danny Greene, was named the Seattle Times Star of the Week for this past week following the Woodinville win. While Woodinville may arguably have the top run defense in the state, Greene still rushed for a touchdown and killed Woodinville with 2 TD receptions out of the backfield (one for 60, and over 100 yards receiving for the game), broke-up a key pass, recovered a fumble and made a huge, touchdown-saving tackle. He has excellent speed and quickness in space and is also going to be a big factor at defensive back.
- How big of a factor championship game experience will play: This is Skyline’s fifth straight trip to the state title game at Tacoma Dome, having won three titles in that span. This is Skyview’s first state title game – and second trip to the Tacoma Dome – period. If this is a tight game, or if Skyview has a lead and Skyline is making a late charge, it will be interesting to see how Skyview holds up being at the disadvantage experience-wise in championship games.

Skyline Head Coach’s thoughts regarding Skyview:
General impressions of Skyview and what and/or who concerns him most – “Very good football team that plays with great discipline on both sides of the ball. Obviously they are big up front and have athletes that make plays. Offensively, the play of the RB and QB right now are concerning and we have to limit their big plays. Defensively, they fly around and play disciplined football. On both sides you can tell they are coached very well.”
Keys to winning – “Create Turnovers and eliminate big plays on defense. On offense, play Skyline Football and play within the system.”
Thoughts on, like Skyview, scheduling two tough early season opponents in Bellevue and Lake Oswego (both tough losses) and how it prepared the team in the long run as opposed to schedule less talented opponents - “The best thing we can do early in the season is put in the kids in situation and games which create a playoff type atmosphere. The only way to do this is play the top teams around. It can only make you better and the best part is the kids have to react to adverse situations and how they react to those situations in a positive way will only make you better as a team and unity. You cannot create this if you are playing teams that or average to below average.”
On avoiding complacency keeping the team motivated considering the fact the Spartans have played in five straight title games (and won three) – ”The motivation of playing in the playoffs takes care of itself. The players have learned from the old players growing up in the program the expectations of playing in the playoffs. As a head coach it is my responsibility to create team bonding experiences or ways to focus the players during the week. This has been anything from something as simple as a decal on the helmet, make t-shirts to having a sit down talk about goal setting. The other thing is playing the schedules that both of us have has prepared us for this moment. ”

Former Skyline WR Kasen Williams started for the Spartans from 2007-2010 and played in 4 WIAA State Finals, going 3-1. Williams is now a starting WR at the University of Washington as a Freshman. Photo by Dirk Knudsen
On the privilege and luxury of having Jake Heaps and Max Browne at QB back-to-back – “I have been very, very spoiled. The best thing is they are the most competitive kids I have ever coached and are great leaders. Obviously with play calling I have more freedom, but we still have to play within the system we have in place to succeed.”
Thoughts on the quality of the defense Skyline has despite the offense seemingly receiving all the publicity - “The defense has really started to gel. I think the most difficult thing in the beginning of the season is we started a lot of new faces on defense and they are now playing with confidence and trust in each other.”
On the experience of facing Mead at Joe Albi Stadium in the snow in the 1st round - “Going to Spokane was a lot of fun. This group has great chemistry and it was fun to go on a road trip. The players were focused and ready for the game. Mead was a very, very good football team and we were happy to get out of there with a win. I was very proud of the play of our offensive line because in order to win that game we had to run the football on our first drive against a very good line and they did.”
Thoughts on the current players getting to see both Jake Heaps (BYU) and Kasen Williams (UW) playing for big-time programs on national TV – It is a lot of fun and very proud moments to watch these kids play as well as the other players playing college football.

- Xavier has raw talent with good speed.
11 David Garlington 12 5’11 180 WR/DB

23 Forrest Russell 11 5’7 145 WR/DB
- Forrest Russell may be a bit undersized, but his top end speed and ability to make defenders miss more than make up for his lack of size.
25 Mo Morrison 12 5’11 215 WR/DB
- Mo is a ball hawk that not only loves to make you pay for coming into his area, he has the size at 215+ to make you remember him the rest of the game.
33 Jabari Marshall 11 6’2 190 RB/LB
- Jabari has speed and length and a knack for finding the football. In on just about every play, whether run or pass.
42 Parker Henry 12 6’0 205 RB/LB
- Parker is a flat out beast. No one works harder before, during or after the game then Henry does. A very physical runner who refuses to go down. He has the ability to run over and around defenders and just gets the football into the end zone.
51 Anthony Chamberlain 11 6’2 255 OL/DL
- Anthony is a very aggressive raw talent with speed to burn coming off the edge. Learning how to use different moves to set up Offensive Linemen. Huge upside.

Skyview Senior OL/DL Johan Koreski in only his first year of varsity football started on the OL and was selected to the 1st Team 4A GSHL All-League Team as a DL. Photo by Dave Scot0t
63 Dylan Bratlie 12 6’5 285 OL/DL
- Dylan has very good technique and loves to play on the OL. Still has room to grow into his 6’5 frame and can both pass and run block.
65 Zack Wallace 11 6’4 305 OL/DL
- Zack Wallace is an early bloomer with strength to move defenders out of the way.
71 Riley Bockmier 12 6’3 245 OL/DL
- Riley has become an unstoppable pass rusher with the ability to run down a running back.
72 Jonah Koreski 12 6’1 280 OL/DL
- Jonah is a good run stopper who has a knack for finding the football.
74 Willie Lopez 11 6’5 250 OL/DL
- Willie has plenty of length and is tough to block coming off the edges, His length can cause a lot of issues in the opposing passing attack.
Coach Kizer’s general impressions of Skyline and who and/or what concerns him most: “They are very sound in all three phases of the game. Obviously they have been there before, this not going to be anything new to them, their experience is one of their best attributes.”
On what about Skyline really stood out on tape other than the obvious, widely-known team traits: “They are very good tacklers. They aren’t the biggest team we have played but they are far and away the best tackling team we have played.”
On what surprised him about last week’s win vs. Lake Stevens: “Our DB’s did such a great job that our DL got some coverage sacks. I was confident that they would play well, but that was their best game all year, against the best QB we have seen.”
Thoughts on what it meant to the team to finally accomplish “129″: “It has been an awesome ride, while everyone knows this is the last week, nobody wants it to stop. We have achieved the 129 goal, now they have changed NBLC to NBSC.”
Putting into words the game Kieran McDonagh had last week: “He made some great throws, had some great runs, but most importantly he had some great decisions. His poise was steady throughout the game. For him to stay as level and calm as he did in that environment and on that stage was great to see.”
Thoughts on the play-calling and what he was thinking while everything seemed to be working so well: “When you are playing you rarely get that feeling of being in ‘the zone’, when all of your players have that at the same time, it starts to rub off onto the coaches.”
On Skyline’s similar offensive style of play and how it affects preparation and if it can lead to a false sense of security: “You don’t get complacent when you play a team that is playing in their 5th straight final. While they do some things we do, they are also very different. They are definitely more similar to Lake Stevens in what they do than to us.”
His opinion as to why the defense has really seemed to pick-up its game this postseason against better competition: “Some guys are getting healthy which helps and some guys are starting to realize their potential. We had some guys make some plays in the Union game which showed them how good they really could be.”
The one thing he will remember most about this historical season if Skyview wins: “The leadership and spirit of this senior group. We have a lot of juniors and some sophomores in some key roles for us, but these seniors have been unbelievable. After starting 0-2 lesser men would have folded, but not these guys…these guys are special!”

Skyview Junior DE Anthony Chamberlain and the Storm DL put the head on Lake Stevens QB Jake Nelson all game last weekend, forcing 2 interceptions and recording 3 sacks. They will need to get the same pressure on Skyline's Max Browne if they want to win a state title. Photo by Dave Scott
Washingtonpreps.com’s Top 60 and/or “Prospects List” Members (highest ranking from either list used):
- Kieran McDonagh, 6’2”, 235, 2nd-ranked QB; 15th-ranked ATH

- William Lopez, 6’3″ 215, DL
MY PREDICTION:
“I expect Skyview to have a tougher time defensively in this game as opposed to last week against Jake Nelson and Lake Stevens. I see RB Greene as a real threat in multiple ways, and Max Browne is so talented that he is going to put up some yardage and points early, no doubt about it. However, Parker Henry is going to get going this week and Skyview is going to score points like they have done all season long and give Skyline problems with their excellent offensive balance as well. In addition to having Max Browne and Greene, I think Skyline’s championship game experience is a factor in their favor. But it won’t be enough. I see the lead changing hands several times. Skyline may have the lead even as late as the 4th quarter, but I think Skyview’s combination of size on both lines and speed will eventually wear Skyline down, and Parker Henry will do just enough to be the difference in this game. I’m by no means 100% confident with this pick, as it could easily go either way, but my score is Skyview 31, Skyline 28.

Skyview’s Bockmier, Marshall, McDonagh And Russell – Week 13 GSHL Football New Athlete Players Of The Week
GSHL Football will be awarding a Player Of The Week every week this season.
To be considered for Player Of The Week an athlete must have an outstanding performance in his teams WIN over an equally matched opponent*.
Week 13 of the 2011 season had plenty of big time performances.
Skyview DL Riley Bockmier, LB Jabari Marshall, QB Kieran McDonagh and WR Forrest Russell were all selected as the New Athlete Players of the Week for Week 13.

Riley Bockmier had 2 sacks and a fumble recovery helping the Storm to a 38-14 win over #8 Lake Stevens In the WIAA 4A Semifinals. Photo by Dave Scott

Skyview played a near perfect game last Saturday in the Tacoma Dome on their way to a 38-14 Semifinals win over then 12-0 Lake Stevens. The Strom had so many players step up and have monster games. We felt that four of them stood out as the cream of the crop and thus awarded multiple Players of the Week for the first time.
Senior DL Riley Bockmier was part of the Strom defensive front that put pressure on Vikings QB Jake Nelson all night. Bockmier finished the game with a pair of sacks and recovered a fumble caused by fellow D-Lineman Willie Lopez. Bockmier was not the only Skyview D-Lineman to recover a Vikings fumble however, on the first offensive play of the game, Senior Dylan Bratlie recovered a Lake Stevens fumble caused by DB Hayden Schuh, setting up the Storm’s first touchdown of the game. Although Bockmier did not recover this fumble, he was the first person to signal a Skyview first down, well before the white hat had figured it out!
Junior WR Forrest Russell made his presence known right after the Bratlie fumble recovery when he hauled in a 36 yard pass from Kieran McDonagh down at the 2 yard line. Two plays later Parker Henry was in the end zone and Skyview led 7-0. Russell would catch 9 more passes for another 108 yards, one of which was a 16 yard touchdown reception from McDonagh in the 3rd quarter. Russell finished the game with 10 catches for 144 yards setting a Skyview single game record for receptions.
Along with the 16 yard touchdown pass to Russell in the 3rd, Senior QB Kieran McDonagh also threw a 7 yard touchdown to Riley Henderson early in the 2nd quarter to put Skyview up 14-0. Later in the quarter, McDonagh ran in his first of two touchdowns, this one from 26 yards out, making several Vikings defenders miss along the way, putting Skyview up 21-0 on the #8 ranked Lake Stevens squad. McDonagh would later add a 1 yard touchdown run early in the 3rd quarter to put Skyview back up by 21 at 28-7. He finished the game with 339 passing yards going 22 of 31 on the night with the 2 touchdowns and just one pick. He also added 65 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on 9 carries, for a total of 404 yards and 4 scores.
Throughout the entire game while McDonagh and his offense were doing just about anything they wanted to, over on the defense, Junior LB Jabari Marshall was in on just about every tackle. Marshall finished the game with 13 solo tackles and a handful, or a couple of handfuls of assisted tackles as Skyview’s defense held Lake Stevens to just 72 yards rushing and no scores on the ground and forcing Lake Stevens QB Jake Nelson to pass the ball 41 times, almost twice his season per game average.
NOTE: Parker Henry added 77 rushing yards on 19 carries keeping the Vikings defense focused on the run most of the game. Reiley Henderson added 60 receiving yards on just 5 catches with 1 touchdown while having a 1st quarter touchdown called back on a questionable holding call. Mo Morrison added 84 receiving yards on just 2 catches. David Garlington had 2 second half interceptions helping to snuff out and hope Lake Stevens had for a comeback.

While the Skyview football team prepares to play in the state championship game, the rest of the school is getting prepared to follow the Storm to glory.
“The buzz is everywhere. Everyone is proud to be a cloud,” said junior Brad Usselman, the student body vice president. “Everyone is talking about it: ‘Who ya going to the game with?’ They want Saturday to be here now. It’s like we’ve been waiting years and years.”
Proud to be a cloud.
Skyview students, teachers, and administrators love finding new terms of affection for the Storm.
Skyview takes on Skyline — a battle for Washington’s Sky — on Saturday in the Class 4A state championship game. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Tacoma Dome.
No doubt that Henry is epitome of Skyview

Prior to his team’s state semifinal football game Saturday evening, Skyview defensive lineman Anthony Chamberlain asked me to come find him after the contest.
Moments after Skyview’s victory over Lake Stevens, I made my way down to the Tacoma Dome field. Chamberlain and his teammates were busy celebrating with their fans.
He noticed me, walked over, and this is what he had to say:
“I told Parker from the get-go, we’re going to get him a ring. We’re on that path. We’ve got one more game to do it.”
Parker is Parker Henry, the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League offensive player of the year and the leading rusher in all of Class 4A Washington football.

Riley Bockmier stood before his teammates prior to a playoff game a few weeks back to deliver a message from the heart.
“I was told I’d never play again — twice — and I’m here,” Bockmier said.
He is here, with his Skyview teammates, preparing to play in the Class 4A state championship football game. The Storm take on Skyline of Sammamish at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Tacoma Dome.
A defensive lineman, Bockmier did not need to remind his teammates of all he had endured to play his senior year. They know of his two knee surgeries and the initial diagnosis that his playing days were finished.
So instead, he expressed to his teammates that the only way for him to honor his work and commitment to returning to football was to play each play like it could be his last.
Keep an eye out in tomorrow’s Columbian for another story on the Skyview football team as well.
