Camas, Skyview, Union And Mark Morris All Ranked In Tacoma News Tribune Preseason Top 10 Rankings

Written by Bryan Levesque on August 31, 2010

Camas head football coach Jon Eagle does not think his Papermakers are a #2 team... yet.

The Tacoma News Tribune released their preseason top 10 rankings for all 6 levels of Washington High School football this week.

4 Greater St. Helens League football teams found themselves among the states elite.

Camas received the highest ranking of the 4, as the Papermakers came in at #2 in the 3A poll right behind 2x defending 3A champions Bellevue.

“It’s exciting to see that we’re ranked highly, but rankings don’t mean much in the preseason,” said Camas QB Logan Grindy. “I know we have the potential to do great things, we just need to go out and prove it. There is no better way of doing that then going out and getting a win this weekend at Qwest.”

Papermakers defensive lineman Odin Coe agrees with Grindy.

“All I really have to say is it is a preseason ranking,” he said. “It is neat, but doesn’t really mean anything. We have a lot of work we need to do to be the #2 team, but it’s not out of reach.”

Camas will take on Timberline at 3:30 Saturday at Qwest Field as part of the Emerald City Kickoff Classic. The Blazers are ranked #10 in the 3A poll.

Papermakes head coach Jon Eagle is not so quick to put his squad that high on the poll just yet.

“I’ve seen 2′s practice,” he said. “We are not a 2 right now.”

In the 4A poll, 2 GSHL schools are tanked in the top 10. Skyview, the 2x defending 4A GSHL Champions are at #6, and Union, the 2x defending 3A GSHL Champions are ranked #8.

Like Bellevue in the 3A, Skyline is ranked #1 in the 4A having won 3 state title in a row.

“I am just honored the we are being considered as a such a good team this year,” said Ellis Henderson, a Sr. WR/DB at Skyview. “I was actually more excited to see both Union, as a 4A team, and Camas on there with us! It’s nice to finally see this area get some well deserved recognition!”

Seeing Union ranked #8 is a bit of a surprise, but the Titans are ready to show how good they can be.

“I think it’s great that at least someone thinks we have some potential,” said Zak Browning, a Sr. RB/LB at Union “But nothing is proven until we go out on the field and show the state that we can play.”

Union will also play in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic Saturday, as they take on Bellevue at 5:30.

In the 2A poll, last seasons 2A GSHL Champs Mark Morris just cracked the list at #10.

why does the 2a ranked teams never change? always archbishop murphy, prosser, lynden, west valley, othello and burlingtonedison are on that list. how come new teams never come on that list? the newest member is Mark Morris, and they arent’ ever on the upper end.

Because our 2A programs need to actually get something done in the playoffs!

Still all I ever hear is talk of 4a’s and 3a’s. 2a’s are always the same, with the same teams moving on. then the last 2 teams change…it gets old.

Who decided for us that Camas is way too good to play “lowly” Washougal. That is a really old tradition !!!!!

Got something to say?
