No. 1 Bellevue travels to Harry Lang Stadium to take on No. 2 Lakes in the WIAA 3A Quarterfinals. Both Lakes and Bellevue are nationally ranked high school football teams.
Our man Dirk Knudesn has hooked us all up and the Bellevue at Lakes game will be LIVE streaming on WashingtonPreps.com.
Knudesn is teaming up with the boys from Tri Cities based Washington Sport Network to deliver the big game for FREE online tonight.
Kickoff time is 7:30 p.m.
Simply click on over to WashingtonPreps.com and do a little scouting of a who Camas could play in the state title game if the Papermkaes can win their next 2 games.
I know this is not a GSHL game, but as we all know, the GSHL is plenty familiar with both Lakes and Bellevue.

3 GSHL Teams In The Quarterfinals Not Historical But Still Significant

Skyview defeated Union 44-27 at Kiggins Bowl in week 9 to win the 4A Greater St. Helens League title. The Storm and Titans are still both alive in the 4A Quarterfinals and could face each other again on December 3rd in the Tacoma Dome for the WIAA 4A Sate Championship. Photo by Dave Scott
As sports fans we are always looking for something that has never happened before. You know what I mean. “That’s the first time that has ever happened” It does not matter what it is, it could be first time a player threw 8 touchdowns in a single game, or it could be the first time a player has thrown a touchdown in the 3rd quarter when his team was down 14 points for 3 weeks in a row. Trust me, we are always looking.
That brings me to this weekends WIAA Quarterfinals and the Greater St. Helens League.
On Saturday we will have 3 GSHL football teams playing for a ticket to the Semifinals.
Is this the first time the GSHL has had 3 teams in the Quarterfinals in the same season? Ah, no. You don’t have to go that far back to get that, just 2 years ago in 2009, Skyview, Union and Mark Morris all reached the Quarters.
Is this the first time we have had 2 Quarterfinals games at home? Ah, no. Same year, 2009 both Skyview and Union hosted Quarterfinals.
Is this the first time we have had 2 teams for the same classification make the Quarterfinals? Ah, no. In 1983 both Kelso and Mark Morris of the AA St. Helens Conference played in the Quarters. Although that season, Kelso, the league champs played on the road while Mark Morris the league runner up played at home. Strange.
Is it the first time a school is in their 3rd Quarterfinals in a 4 year span (Union)? Ah, no. Kelso made 3 straight from 1986-1988.
But never fear, there are a couple firsts for the GSHL this weekend.
- First time 2 4A (or old AAA) teams are in the Quarters
- First time 3 GSHL teams from Clark County are in the Quarters
So while this is not a weekend of firsts, it’s still great to see the GSHL trending in the right direction.

Can’t Make it?: Live updatesDating back to 1999, the GSHL has placed now 19 schools in the Quarterfinals, an average of 1.58 over the last 12 seasons. There has been multiple teams represented in 5 of the 12 years and only 2 years (2005 and 2007) where no GSHL team advanced to the Quarterfinals.
That’s quite a bit different than the decade which preceded this current run of greater success. From 1989-1998 the GSHL only had 3 teams advance, (Prairie ’89, Kelso ’94 and Evergreen ’95) with Evergreen being the only one of those to win their Quarterfinals game.
That down decade was right on the heals of a pretty nice run where from 1983-1988 the GSHL had 2 teams each year 5 of the 6 seasons and never went without a GSHL representative.
Current Camas head Coach Jon Eagle has been coaching in the GSHL since the mid 1980′s and has seen the ups and downs of the league. When Eagle took over as the Evergreen head coach in 1988 it was the norm for multiple teams to reach the Quarters, but then it quickly dried up. Were the teams just not as good for that decade? Eagle does not think so.
“We were 8-1 in 1989 and didn’t go to the playoffs,” said Eagle. “The new WIAA format that lets leagues share berths is better.”
He is referring to the addition of the week 10 Preliminary round games which were added in 1997. Prior to that the GSHL would only get 1 team from each classification some years, even though at times the AAA GSHL had up to 10 teams.
“That allows more good teams in the playoffs,” Eagle added. “More teams, more chances.”
Also in 1997 the WIAA split up the AA and AAA levels and made the current 2A, 3A and 4A levels. Imagine a 10 team GSHL that included Camas, Skyview and Union and only 1 team made the round of 16. No thanks, we have been there and done that.
However Eagle does not think that’s the only reason for the leagues recent success.
“CCYF. Period,” said Eagle referring to Clark County Youth Football the areas youth football league that has been around since 1983 and has grown from 1 and approximately 20 players team way back then to well over 50 teams and 1500+ players each and every year serving 2nd through 8th graders.
“More players playing earlier has allowed us to compete at the statewide level,” Eagle added.
Current Prairie head coach Terry Hyde was a co-founder of the league back in 1983 and currently serves as the leagues President. He has stated that that was one of the goals of the league to provide a feeder system for area schools. On the leagues website, ccyf.com, they say:
The CCYF program has always been about giving the players a safe, positive football experience, with the motto “Kids First and Winning Second.” It has been a goal of CCYF to help build feeder programs to the local high schools, to help them reach their ultimate goal of winning a state championship for their school. This goal was first met in 1995 by the kids who had played for the Lewis River Raiders and went on to win the state class “A” championship for Ridgefeild High School. Then again in 2004 when Evergreen High School won the WIAA 4A State Championship.
Hyde has talked about how much he would love to see a representative from Clark County at the Tacoma Dome from each level of play from 1A to 4A. While that won’t happen this year, there is still the possibility of having 3A and 4A and even the ultimate, 2 4A teams squaring off for the state championship (Skyview and Union).
“That’s my dream,” said Columbian Sports Reporter Paul Valencia. “I would just write stories all week long on as many players as I could, it would be awesome!”
we are still a long away from the WIAA Finals on December 2nd and 3rd, but at least we have a shot! 3 of the final 16 teams in the states top 2 classification are form the Greater St. Helens League, and that awesome.

Playoffs Experts Picks, Presented By The Barbers – We Pick All Of The Winners For The Entire 4A, 3A And 2A Playoffs
We run the site, so in our book, that makes us experts! The WIAA high school football playoffs start today!
4 Greater St. Helens League teams are still alive and playing for a state championship.
Skyview and Union will go at it in a wide open 4A. No longer are the Skyline Spartans the team everyone has penciled in to win the 4A. Of the 5 GSHL “experts” we have picked 4 different teams to win the 4A including Eastlake, Woodinville, Lake Stevens and Bellarmine Prep. Prep is the only school that was picked by 2 experts to win state, while at the same time, two of us have them loosing in the Quarterfinals. Two of the experts have Union winning this week, while two have Skyview reaching the Seimfinals. Again, the 4A is WIDE OPEN.
Camas and Mountain View will go at it in the 3A. The GSHL “experts” see the two schools on either extreme. All 5 have Mountain View losing to Lakes while all 5 experts have Camas at least in the Semifinals and 3 have them in the finals, however none have the Papermakers winning state. 4 picked the 100x defending champs from Bellevue while one has Lakes winning their first title since 2001.
At the 2A level, no GSHL schools qualified for the playoffs. The GSHL “experts” have picked 4 different winners, Tumwater, the only team picked by two experts, and Prosser, North Thurston and Lynden.
Make sure you jump on and leave a post with your picks. The winner this week will again receive a FREE haircut from The Barbers! If you have a few minutes, go ahead and let us know why you are making your pick as well!
