The Strom put up 41 points on the road in Spokane, but that was not enough as WSU bound Connor Halliday threw 3 TD passes to lead the Ferris Saxons to a 46-41 win in the WIAA 4A Semifinals.

FB Johnny Barrett tied the game at 7 with his 1 yard run, and Ellis Henderson took a short pass from Dodge later in the second and took it 59 yards for the electric TD and tied the game at 14-14 with 3:12 in the half.

After the the wheels fell off for Skyview, a quick Ferris drive made it 20-14, then Skyview there an interception that was ran back 36 yards as time expired, and the Storm found themselves down 27-14 at the half.

Skyview was not about to quit however.

Henderson took another pass from Dodge and scooted down the sidelines for the score, this time from 41 yards out to cut the lead to 27-21.

After another Ferris score, Matt Spears capped off an 11 play 90 yard Storm drive with a 1 yard run keeping up score for score with the Saxons 5 seconds into the 4th quarter as the score was 33-28 Ferris.

Then, it got exciting.

Ferris scored on a 1 play 49 yard run to jump back up 39-28. Skyview went 45 yards in 5 plays when Dodge hit Karl Graves from 5 yards out to make it 39-34.

After each team exchanged punts, Ferris drove 64 yards in only 4 plays, as Halliday hit Jordan Tonani from on a 24 yard catch and run, to put the Saxons up 46-34 with only 4:04 remaining in the game.

Skyview was able to score, but it took them 17 plays and 4:02 as Dodge hit Spears from 5 yards out.

However with only 2 seconds left in the game, there was little room for error as they attempted an onside kick down 46-41.

The kick was recovered by the Saxons as time expired.

The game was very exciting to watch. Hats off to Skyview on a very impressive season.

The mighty Bellevue Wolverines were held without an offensive TD but still defeated Union 19-13 in the WIAA Semifinals.

After trailing 6-0 at the half, Union gave up a 97 yard KO return for a TD to Braynden Van Ackeren and found themselves in a 13-0 hole early in the third.

Union QB Brandon Weller found Mitch Saylor from 35 yards out to cut the lead to 13-6 before the extra point was blocked.

Two more FG by Sciabica and the Titans were down 19-6 with only 6:10 in the game.

The Titans were able to drive 62 yards in 6 plays when Nataniel Penaranda scored on a 4 yard run to cut the lead to 19-13 with 1:19 to go.

The Union onside magice however was all gone as the kick went right into the hands of Van Ackeren and the win to the Wolverines.

With the win Bellevue improves to 11-2. The Wolverines will play Liberty next Friday for the WIAA 3A Championship.

Union drops to 11-2 with the loss. The Titans season is over.

Saturday afternoon, 1:00 pm at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane, the 2009 4A GSHL champion Skyview Storm take on the 9-3 Ferris Saxons in the Semifinals of the WIAA state football playoffs.

So, just who are the Ferris Saxons?

Ferris High School is located in Spokane and are members of the Greater Spokane League.

The Saxons are coached by forth year head coach Jim Sharkey and finished 3rd in the GSL. Ferris finished league play at 5-3 and are currently 9-3 overall. The Saxons last lost back in week 8 42-20 to Lewis & Clark. Ferris has won 4 games in a row since the loss to the Tigers.

Coach Sharkey was the head coach at Battle Ground and Woodland prior to taking the job in Spokane.

Ferris finished in a 3 way tie for third place in the GSL (after back-to-back GSL titles in ‘07 & ‘08) and defeated Gonzaga Prep and University in mini games to take the 3rd seed. They then qualified for the state playoffs with a 21-10 road win over Wenatchee on Nov 6th, then defeated Kamiakin 41-16 at home  in the First Round. Saturday the Saxons again hit the road and defeated Eisenhower 24-14 in Yakima.

The Saxons run a spread offense like that of Skyview. They are led by Senior QB #12 Connor Halliday (6′4″ 190) with his 3,486 yards passing and 34 TD on the season. Connor has thrown for at least 230 yards in each game this season. When the Saxons went to California to take on Esperanza High School, Halliday put on quite the show with 420 yards passing and 5 TD. In the Saxons’s three post season wins, he is 66/109 for 853 yards and 9 TD with just one pick last week. Halliday was a back-up QB for Lewis & Clark when they won the 4A state championship in 2007 prior to transferring to Ferris that same season.

Halliday’s favorite target has been Sr. WR #82 Jason Bates (6′4″ 185). Bates has 17 TD’s and 1360 receiving yards in 2009. Six times Bates has had games with over 100 yards receiving this season, however he has been held to under 100 in the last 4 games where he has a total of 206 yards and 5 TD. Jr. WR’s #4 Beau Bozett (6′ 0″155) and Jordan Tonani (6′0″ 195) are always there when Bates is not open. Bozett has 725 receiving yards and 6 TD while Tonani has 663 yards receiving and 8 TD’s.

Like Skyview, Ferris also has a solid running game led by Sr. RB #32 Gage Orosco (6′0″ 195). Orosco has 946 rushing yards on the season and 6 TD. In the last five games, Orosco has been there to keep other defenses honest as he ran for 545 yards over that stretch. He has also been there in the passing game. This season he has three games with over 100 yards receiving including last week’s Quarterfinals win where he had 13 catches for 150 yards and 2 TD.

One of the main reasons for the Saxons’ success on offense has been the play of their offensive line. They are anchored by a pair of highly tauted linemen in Sr. #57 Kjelby Oiland (6′4″ 255) and Sr. #72 Trevor Poole (6′5″ 250). Oiland is listed on scout.com as a 2 star athlete while Poole is 1 star. Both lineman are rated higher than Mark Morris (Air Force commit) Jake Welch.

The Saxons are led defensively by Sr. LB #19 Peter Anderson (6′0″ 165), Soph.  LB #50 Chris Beaulauier (6′0″ 180), Sr. LB #38 Brendon Olson (5′11″ 170), Jr. DB  #5 Riley Stockton (6′4″ 190), Jr. DB #20 Cody Sorensen (5′9″ 170), Sop. DL #16 Drew Sharkey (6′2″ 218) along with Poole and Oiland on the line and Bozett at DB.

In Week 12 Bryan went 10-2 and mike went 8-4. There were no games that we both picked that went the other way. Hurray us! On the 6 games we were split on, Mike hit on 2 while Bryan got 4 right. In 4A Bryan picked Ferris and they pulled out a 24-14 road win over an 11-0 Eisenhower team. 3A was split Bryan was sold on Liberty after watching them beat a very good Camas team, while Mike fell in love with Lindvergh’s big win over Ferndale the week before. This one could have gone either way and was not decided until a 3rd OT. Bryan, having grown up in Spokane thought Lakes would be too cold and that Mt. Spokane could overcome the speed differential because they are used to the cold. Well that did not happen. Lakes won 24-0, the Lancers third shut out this post season. It is now Lakes 135 Anyone Else 0. In the 2A, Mike’s season long dedication to the 2A level hit a speed bump, Lynden crushed Sequim 31-0 on the road while Archbishop Murphy edged W.F. West on the road 14-7. He did call West Valley (Spokane) over Othello, and that was the closest game of the 2A quarterfinals with WV coming up 28-22 winners in overtime. The other 6 games we agreed on, we nailed them all. Bryan is now 106-32 (77%) and Mike is 102-36 (74%).

Skyview (10-2) at Ferris (9-3)			Last week Skyview played in their first close game since a 28-14 win over Evergreen back on Oct. 16. While Skyview did play 6 road games in the regular season, only 1 was not in Vancouver, and that was a 47-41 loss at Marysville-Pilchuck. Ferris is a very good football team with a very good QB in Connor Halliday. The Saxons are playing a home game in the Semifinals for the third year in a row. They lost to Bothell in ‘07 and and Skyline in ‘08. We are not driving 790+ miles to see Skyview lose.
Skyline (10-2) vs Bothell (12-0)			2009 Week 9 KingCo Championship Game saw Bothelle get ahead then fall behind then come from behind to beat Skyline 25-20. Since then Bothelle has won their games: 61-0, 57-14, and 30-9. Skyline has bounced back and won their 3 games 42-0, 63-14 and 49-14. They beat then 10-0 South Kitsap 63-14 at South Kitsap and followed that up by beating then 11-0 Curtis 49-14 at Curtis. Skyline v Skyview in the 4A championship game? That is our pick.

Liberty (11-1) vs Lakes (12-0)			Lakes has not allowed a point this post season. They have won 56-0 then 55-0 then 24-0. Liberty is a good football team. They are too good not to cross the 50.
Bellevue (10-2) vs Union (11-1)			It’s Bellevue and Union. Need we say more?
2A
Ellensburg (12-0) at West Valley (Spokane) (12-0)			West Valley is looking to get back to the state championship game for the first time since 1984. They last won it all in 1976. Ellensburg last played in (and won) the state title game in 1973. This game follows the Storm/Saxons game, so if you are in Spokane and staying the night, stick around and watch.
Lynden (11-1) vs Archbishop Murphy (11-1)			Archbishop Murphy beat Lynden 34-20 in week 1 at Quest Field.  The Lions have have only allowed 64 points in their last 11 games since the loss. Archbishop Murphy lost the next week to 3A Eastside Catholic who finished 4-6.

September 4, 2009 – McKenzie Stadium, Vancouver Washington

Week 1 started off with a bang as the defending 4A GSHL Champion Skyview Storm visited the defending 3A GSHL Champion Union Titans.

The Titans and Storm played to a scoreless halftime. Union Linebacker Zach Strausbaugh (55), DB T.J. Boatright (3) and Skyview DL Dallin Shirley (41), DL Alec Osborn (50) helped keep each others offensives at bay.

After Skyview Kicker Nick Phillips hit a 22 yard FG to give the Storm a 3-0 lead in the 4th quarter, Union QB Brandon Weller connected with WR Matt Merlino from 38 yards out to give the Titans a 7-3 with only 3:55 left in the game.

Union FB Zak Browning (21) ran in a 27 yard trap on the Titans next possession giving Union a 14-3 lead.

Titans RB Nathaniel Penaranda runs in the 12 yard TD in the first quarter to push the Titans lead to 17-0.

The Titans cap off the scoring in the first half with a Brandon Weller to Nathaniel Penaranda 29 yard TD strike and a 34-0 lead.

The Union defense only allowed 1 first down in the first half and 0 completed passes the entire game. LB Zach Strausbaugh (55) and DB Tanner Nelson (20).

Foothill 15 Union 9

September 19, 2009 – Memorial Stadium, Seattle Washington

Union RB Blake Russell and the Titans found moving the chains hard to do in the first half vs. the Foothill Cougars.

Union WR Mitch Saylor can't make the acrobatic catch in first quarter. There was no flag on this play...

Union QB Brandon Weller finds TE Taylor Nelson (94) on a throwback screen and Nelson takes off down the sidelines as he follows the blocking of Devin Myers (75) and Tyler Knotts (68).

Taylor Nelson (94) takes the screen pass 54 yards for the TD, and cuts the score to 8-7 in the second quarter.

Down 15-9 in the forth quarter, the Titans were able to get a drive going behind OL Devin Myers (75) FB Zak Browning (21) and RB Blake Russell (28) but were not able to score.

Union 56 Heritage 13

September 25, 2009 – McKenzie Stadium, Vancouver Washington

Titans RB Blake Russell had 80 yards rushing on 13 carries and found the end zone three times.

Union WR Mitch Saylor makes an incredible catch over a Heritage defender on a 45 yard TD pass from QB Brandon Weller to put the Titans up 14-0 in the first quarter.

Union LB Taylor Nelson and Sam Ferenchak (56) swarm Heritage RB Mike McDonald. The Titans defense held Heritage to only 58 yards rushing on the night.

Titans Kicker Jed Barnett was 8 of 8 kicking extra points in the win.

Union harassed Timberwolves QB Garrett Grayson all night, only allowing 50% of his passes to be completed for under 200 yards.

Union 45 Columbia River 0

October 2, 2009 -McKenzie Stadium, Vancouver Washington

After scoring 2 TD the week before, RB Brandon Brody-Heim (43) was running the ball for the Titans on their first drive of the game.

Union QB Brandon Weller went deep to WR Mitch Saylor (18) for a 47 yard TD strike to give the Titans an early 17-0 second quarter lead.

Titans LB Zach Strausbaugh (55) and DB Anthony Oliverio (12) apply pressure to Columbia River QB Neil Daly. Daly was picked off twice in the second quarter, both times by DB Brandon Kent.

Union's Offensive Line opened running lanes all afternoon as the Titans ran for over 200 yards and 5 TD.

Following a 38-0 halftime lead, Union scored 2 plays into the second half when RB Nathaniel Penaranda broke free on a 36 yard TD run. Then up 45-0 3 minutes into the half, the game went to a "running clock" for the second game in a row.

October 8, 2009 – Kiggins Bowl, Vancouver Washington

The Titans defense played lights out once again as they did not allow a point for the second game in a row.

Nathaniel Penaranda caught his second TD pass from QB Brandon Weller in the second quarter. This one going for 46 yards giving Union a 28-0 lead.

FB Zak Browning capped off the first half scoring with this 42 yard burst up the middle of the Trappers defense. Union led 35-0 at the break.

Union LB Jordan Newman ran back this Trappers interception 51 yards for the Titans TD and 42-0 early third quarter lead.

Titans RB Brandon Brody-Heim made the most of his 1 run on the night, a 42 yard TD in the third quarter. Another "running clock" game as Union lead 49-0.

October 16, 2009 – Kiggins Bowl, Vancouver Washington

Union's Nathaniel Penaranda snags this pass from QB Brandon Weller and takes it to the house for a 50 yard TD. That would be Penaranda's first of five TD's on the night.

Titans QB Brandon Weller (7) passed for 242 yards and 5 TD's in the win.

WR Mitch Saylor's (18) 57 yard TD catch and run put the Titans up 49-0 with 6 minutes left in the second quarter, and for the 4th game in a row the "running clock" was a go.

October 23, 2009 – McKenzie Stadium, Vancouver Washington

Union Defensive Lineman Jared Boynton (90) makes passing the ball for Prairie QB Coleman Weisenborn quite difficult. The Titans got their forth shut out in a row with the 59-0 win.

Another day at the office for the Titans Offensive Line led to 300+ rushing yards and 4 rushing TD's.

Titans RB Blake Russell rumbles through the Prairie defense on this 66 yard TD run in the third quarter. Russell had 3 rushing TD's in the win.

Already up 45-0 in the 4th quarter, Titans RB Brandon Brody-Heim runs in this 22 yard TD to push the Titans over 50 points for the second time this season.

With the game already in "running clock" mode (5th game in a row) Union DB Matt Merlino ran back this interception 35 yards for one last TD.

Union 35 Camas 31

October 30, 2009 – Doc Harris Stadium, Camas Washington

Union RB Nathaniel Penaranda caped off an 80 yard opening drive with this 12 yard TD run to give the Titans an early 7-0 lead.

After falling behind 24-7 in the second quarter, Titans WR Mitch Saylor returned this kick off 99 yards for the TD and a 24-14 halftime deficit.

Union RB Blake Russell scored 2 forth quarter rushing TD's to pull within 31-28.

Down 31-28, Union WR T.J. Boatright recovered the Jed Barnett onside kick late in the forth quarter.

November 6, 2009 – McKenzie Stadium, Vancouver Washington

Union WR Mitch Saylor returned this punt 60 yards for the Titans TD and a very quick 7-0 lead.

Following a Trojans FG, Saylor struck again. This time he took back the kickoff 89 yards for his second return TD of the game. (3rd in last 2 games)

Union DB Matt Merlino (23) and LB Cody Cole (51) along with other Titan defenders take down Olympic star RB Larry Dixon. Dixon came into the game with 5,000+ career rushing yards and 50+ TD's yet was held to just 22 yards and 0 TD by Union's stingy defense.

With Union already up 42-0 late in the second quarter, Titans LB Jordan Newman took back an interception 26 yards the TD and a 49-0 halftime lead.

After all the usual suspects scored (Mitch Saylor, Blake Russell, Nathaniel Peneranda, Brandon Brody-Heim and Brandon Weller) Titans RB Ryan Stafford would not be stopped as he ran in this TD from 39 yards out in the third quarter.

Union RB Blake Russell (38) pushed the Titans lead to 16-0 in the second quarter following his 8 yard TD run.

Blake Russell (38) scored again in the third quarter, this time from 1 yard out to give the Titans a 23-6 lead.

Just for good measure, Blake Russell runs in his third TD of the night, this one from 18 yards out in the third quarter giving the Titans a 30-6 lead.

Union RB Nathaniel Penaranda ran the ball 12 times for 200 yards and 4 TD's in the first half.

Union LB Zak Browning (21) forced a fumble in the second quarter that was picked up by LB Cody Cole (51).

Following the fumble recovery, RB Nathaniel Penaranda ran in this TD from 21 yards out, his 4th TD of the game.

Meadowdale star RB Naji Moore-Taylor was held to under 100 yards rushing and 0 TD by the Titans defense.

The game is going to be a blackout.  ASB is requesting everyone to wear black when we take on Bellevue this weekend.

Shuttle bus.  We are able to get a shuttle bus for parents/adults/families that do not want to drive up to the Tacoma Dome.  We need 47 people per bus, and are hoping to fill two busses.  The cost will be $20 per person.  We need to finalize buses by 4:00 Tuesday, please email me ASAP to secure your seat!  The shuttle will be leaving Union High School at 12:30 and returning to Union approximately 3 hours after the end of the game.  The football players are leaving the school at noon, so if you would like to be there to send them off, that would be great!

For those that do not want to ride the bus, there will also be a caravan leaving the parking lot from Union at 12:30 as well.  Decorate your cars with your Union flags (on sale for $10) and lets get the windows painted up!

Tailgating will take place in the parking lot just north of the Tacoma Dome, the same location as last year.  The tailgating will begin at approximately 3:00, or when everyone gets up there.  We do have parents going up early to set up the parking lot.  The plan is to tailgate from 3-6, and then go cheer on Union to victory!

UNION info

Union will be up first, Friday night at 7:00 in the Tacoma Dome. The Titans will host Bellevue in a rematch of the 2008 3A Championship game.

Union Boosters are going to be having a caravan from UHS to the Tacoma Dome. Departure time has yet to be determined. The tailgate party should be in the same parking lot as last year, just north of the dome.

SKYVIEW info

Skyview will be playing Saturday at 1:00 pm. The Storm will face the Ferris Saxons at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane. Ferris will be playing in the Semifinals for the third year in a row and looking to advance to the finals for the first time.

The Union Titans invoked the WIAA’s running clock for the seventh time this season (second this post season) as they manhandled the visiting Meadowdale Mavericks 49-7.

Union RB/WR Nathaniel Penaranda had 201 yards rushing and 4 TD… in the first half.

Blake Russell added 3 more rushing TD for the Titans in the win.

Penaranda opened the scoring with a 56 yard TD run on the Titans opening drive. He had runs from 1, 10 and 21 later in the game.

Union did not punt until the middle of the 4th quarter.

Union’s defense absolutely shut down the Mavs running game. Led by LB Zach Strausbaugh, and Taylor Nelson Union held Meadowdale to just 61 first half yards and only 3 first downs.

With the win Union improves to 11-1. The Titans will play the winner of tonights Glacier Peak/Bellevue game Friday, 7:30 pm in the Taacoma Dome.

Meadowdale falls to 11-1 with the loss. The Mavericks season is over.
