All You NEED To Know About The Anacortes Seahawks

Anacortes Seahawks Junior QB (#18) Cody Culp has passed for over 1500 yards and 25 TD's to lead Anacortes to an 8-3 record. Photo by David Willoughby
Friday evening, 7:00 pm at at Tumwater Stadium, the 2010 2A Greater St. Helens League champion Mark Morris Monarchs (8-3) will host the Anacortes Seahawks (8-3) in the Quarterfinals of the WIAA 2A state football playoffs.
So, just who are the Anacortes Seahawks?
Anacortes High School is located in Anacortes, WA.
The Anacores Seahawks are coached by Bill Evens and finished second among 2A schools in the Northwest Conference which has a mix of 1A, 2A and 3A schools. Anacores finished league play at 5-2 and are currently 8-3 overall. The Seahawks last lost 27-14 to #12 Lynden in week 9 at home. Anacores has won 2 games in a row since the loss to the Lions.
Anacortes qualified for the state playoffs with a 28-13 home win over Cedarcrest and then defeated Lindbergh 28-14 at home in the first round of state.
Anacortes HS is fortunate to have excellent coverage of all of it’s high school sports. Mark Martin and the gang at NWCAthletics.com provide superior coverage of all 14 schools in the Northwest Conference. The Web site covers all sports and includes scores, stats, schedules, standings and plenty of photos of the games.
The Seahawks run mostly out of a base Wing-T offense, but also have a hodgepodge of other formations, form split back, 3 wide, to double-tight I formation.
Junior QB Cody Culp (5’11″ 160) has passed for 1581 yards and thrown 25 touchdowns through the first 10 weeks of the season for Anacortes. Culp has passed for 100+ yards in all 10 games (we could not find his stats from last week), including 205 and 2 touchdowns in a week 3 28-21 loss at Sedro-Wolley and 196 yards and 4 touchdowns in a week 5 36-28 win at Squalicum. Culp has passed for 2 or more touchdowns in all 10 games for the Seahawks.
Culp has done a great job spreading out his passes among 3 Seahawks receivers.
Senior WR Jackson Kirkpatrick (6’0″ 155) leads the team in receptions with 28, receiving yards with 608 and receiving touchdowns with 12. That’s 1 touchdown every 2.3 times he catches the football. Senior RB Tyler Hayes (5’10″ 145) is mostly a threat out of the backfield, as Hayes has 25 catches for 405 yards and 3 receiving touchdowns, compared to only 7 carries for 51 yards. Senior TE Mark Medalia (6’4″ 210) is Culp’s largest target on the team, and has 24 catches for 397 yards and 8 touchdowns, That’s 1 touchdown every 3 times he catches the football.

Anacortes Seahawks Senior RB (#42) Preston Madden has rushed for 1109 yards and 6 TD's, including 237 yards on 43 carries last week with 2 TD in their 28-14 win over Lindbergh. Photo by David Willoughby
While Culp has more passing yards, Anacortes Senior RB Preston Madden (5’11″ 160) actually carries the football roughly 40% of the Seahawks snaps. Madden has 1109 rushing yards on 216 carries and 6 rushing touchdowns. Madden only has 4 games in which he has rushed for 100+ yards and has been held to under 50 3 times. In the Seahawks week 10 preliminary round 28-13 win over Cedarcrest, Madden ran the football 27 times for 158 yards and 2 touchdowns, then again last week in their 28-14 first round win over Lindbergh, Madden ran the football 43 times for 237 yards and 2 more rushing touchdowns. In 5 of Anacortes’s 11 games this season, Madden has rushed at least 20 times.
Anacortes has lived on the razors edge all season.
7 of the Seahawks first 8 games were all 1 possession games, with Anacortes winning 5 of them by a total of 28 points. Their 2 losses were by 7 and 4 points.
“Give them credit, because they made the plays they needed to make and they have some very talented players,” Mount Baker head coach Ron Lepper*
Anacortes appears to run a 4-3 defense most of the time but will walk up a safety and run 4-4 as well.
David Willoughby a freelance photographer for NWCAthletics.com will be at the game Friday and will have photos available for sale the following week online.

#3 Camas Keeps Climbing With Impressive 20-13 Win Over #4 Juanita
It is hard to believe that with all of the success the Camas Papermakers football program has had over the past decade, and that they are one of the oldest schools in Southwest Washington, that they have never won a state playoff game.
Well thanks to their 20-13 home win over #4 ranked Juanita, you can check that off the list.
Camas has won 86 football games since the start of the 2000 season, 85 of those wins NOT playoff games.
Although Camas had rolled to an impressive 10-0 record, spent most of the season ranked #2 in the AP 3A football poll and scored 424 points, many still questioned the Papermakers defense.
Yep although Camas had only given up 9.6 points per game, many were not sure if they could really stop the run. I mean, they had allowed 6 rushing touchdowns in 10 games, 1 in each of their first 4 games, and 2 to Kelso.
The Juanita Rebels entered the playoffs with a run heavy attack that has seen 10 different players score a rushing touchdown led by Jeremiah Laufasa who had over 1200 yards rushing and 12 rushing touchdowns on the season.
If you weren’t already, you are a believer now.
Camas not only did not allow a rushing touchdown tonight to Juanita, they did not allow a single point.
The Rebels offense only crossed the 50 3 times the entire game, and only crossed the Camas 30 on the final drive of the game.
Camas held Juanita to just 152 yards rushing, under half their season per game average, and almost half of those yards came on the final drive of the night, a drive that ended on a 4th and 5 at the Camas 7 when Laufasa was stopped at the 5.
Juanita’s 11 offensive possession: punt, punt, punt, downs, fumble, half, punt, punt, punt, punt, downs. Including 5 3-and-outs.
Several Papermaker defenders had standout games including Odin Coe, Javon Ingram, Kyle Goodnow, Kamari Brown, Damon Kosaki, Addison Owen, Brent Hill, Jeremy Faulkner, Kaika Gunderson, Scott Feather, Erik Clay, John Payne and Alex Hows, in no particular order.
Then there was the Camas offense.
Backup QB Tony Gennaro was 15 of 28 for 207 yards and threw 2 touchdowns.
The game winner from 9 yards out when he pumped and hit a WIDE open Jeremy Faulkner, a quick hitting turn around strike to TE Kyle Ervin from 6 yards out in the 2nd quarter. Gennaro also made several passes down field including a couple of 36 yard strikes to Brent Hill, one in the 2nd quarter to set up the Ervin touchdown, and one to get the final scoring drive going in the 4th quarter.
Faulkner and Miguel Salamanca each spent most of the night playing the roll of “move the chains man” as the 2 combined for 73 receiving yards on 9 catches, most of which keep Camas drives alive.
RB Zack Marshall who entered the game with 940 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns, left the game hobbling after just 3 runs.
Addison Owen took over on that opening drive and ran in the games first score from 7 yards out.
Juanita did manage to score a pair of touchdowns in the game to keep it close.
Camas fumbled the snap on the 2nd play of their 2nd drive and Dom Chadwick fell on the loose ball in the end zone to tie the game at 6.
Then midway through the 4th quarter, after Camas had driven down to the Rebel 20, Andre Casino blocked the attempted field goal, and Cody Treddenbarger picked it up, and rumbled 70 yards with his 7 man convoy all the way to the end zone to tie the game at 13.
Camas improves to 11-0 with the win. The Papermakers will host #6 Lakes (10-1) Friday at Doc Harris Stadium, time TBD.

Kelso’s Season Comes To Sudden End With 50-6 Loss At Kamiakin
Not many people picked the 2010 Kelso Hilanders to be playing the 2nd weekend of November in the WIAA 3A playoffs.
Thanks to the Kamiakin Braves, they won’t be playing on the 3rd weekend as Kelso fell 50-6 in Kennewick Saturday.
The word on Kamiakin was they had a gunslinging quarterback who had a few deep threats, one of which was quite electric in the return game, and a power run game to boot.
And that’s just the offense.
Word was they also had a pretty stingy defense.
Gunslinger QB? Check!
Braves QB Joey Jansen was 7 of 18 for 188 and threw 3 touchdown passes in just over 2 quarters of work.
Deep threat WR’s? Check!
WR Tyler Holle hauled in touchdown passes from 53 and 41 yards out while fellow WR A.J. Griffiths caught one from 31 yards out.
Electric return game? Check!
Tim White took a punt 64 yards down to the 1 setting up the Braves first touchdown, then took the 2nd half kickoff 82 yards down to the 8 and finally returned a punt 60 yards for the Braves final score to go up 50-0 with 2:37 left in the 3rd quarter.
Power run game? Check!
RB Dom Davis scored on touchdown runs from 2 and 8 yards out, and finished the game with 109 rushing yards on 11 carries while Cody Wilmoth scored on the Braves first play from scrimmage in the 2nd half from 8 yards out.
Stingy defense? Check!
Kelso only had 2 first downs in the first half and 199 of total offense, 80 of which came on their final drive vs back up players. The Defense pitched a shutout for over 46 minutes as well.
Kelso trailed 36-0 at the half, and 50-0 after 3.
The Hilanders struggled to move the ball all afternoon. QB Makio Mobbs was just 4 of 17 for 50 yards with 2 interceptions. RB Jared O’Neal had 14 hard carries for 76 well earned yards.
With just over 1 minute remaining in the game, Taylor Radcliffe capped off an 80 yard drive on vs what appeared to be Kamiakin backup defenders with an 8 yard touchdown run.
Kelso falls to 7-4 on the season with the loss. The Hilanders season is over.

Experts Picks – 2010 Playoffs, First Round. All 4A, 3A and 2A Games
We run the site, so in our book, that makes us experts!Week 10 sure had some excitement at the 2A level. Both Mark Morris and R.A. Long played in nail biters at Memorial Stadium, with the Monarchs holding on for the win. Mountain View led 28-7 in the 4th before Timberline stormed back and won 29-28. All 3 experts missed those 2 games, while Bryan was the only one who picked Kelso to win at Seattle Prep. The Kelso pick put Bryan at 6-2 for the weekend, while both Mike and Cody went 5-3. Among our armchair experts out there, only 40 and wsumj also went 6-2. wsumj hangs onto his #1 spot at 82-18. 40 is 1 game back at 81-19 while Keoki is 3rd at 80-20. Mike is next at 79-21, with Bryan 5 games back and Cody 6 back.
We all agree on 20 of the 24 games this week. Cody is out on a lib in 3 games, picking Juanita over Camas, Tumwater over the defending 2A champs who have a 22 game winning streak, Lynden, and Mount Si over Liberty despite having already lost to the Patriots 38-22. Bryan is picking East Valley of Spokane to beat Clarkston, despite the fact that the Knights lost at Clarkston 21-6 earlier this year. Of the 7 games we agree on, we are picking only 3 GSHL schools to win. Last week we went 5-2 on games in which all 3 of us picked the same team and we are 64-11 this season when we all agree.

Bryan (77-23)
Mike (79-21)

Notes on the game. 4A
Eastlake (8-2) at #2 Curtis (10-0)

Eastlake only lost to Central Kitsap in week 1 13-10 and to Skyline in week 8. Skyline beat Central Kitsap last week 16-14 to advance to the first round. Curtis has scored 30+ in all 10 of their games this season, 40+ in 6 and beat Todd Beamer 70-24 in week 9. Auburn (8-3) at #9 Skyview (8-2)

Auburn and Skyview played last year in the Quarterfinals. Auburn is not a strong as last season but still has Alphonse Wade and a solid running game. Skyview is once again hitting their peak at the right time as Skyview has won 6 in a row since a 28-12 loss at Camas in week 4. #7 Rogers (9-1) at #1 Skyline (9-1)

This is probably one of the best first round games this weekend. Rogers has not lost since week 1 when #2 Curtis beat them 34-23. The Rams beat Todd Beamer 42-6 back in week 4. Skyline, well they are Skyline. They also lost in week 1 to Liberty 39-34, then beat Bellevue 28-21 in week 2. 6 of their 9 wins have come vs teams in the playoffs. Bellevue, Lake Oswego, Issaquah, Newport, Eastlake and Bothell. Oh yeah, they have won the last 2 4A state championships and a 3rd in 2007 as a 3A school. They also have this WR named Kasen Williams. I heard he is pretty good. Marysville-Pilchuck (7-3) at #9 Issaquah (8-2)

Marysville-Pilchuck may be 7-3 but they lost 21-17 to a 3-7 Snohomish team in week 6. Also, all of the good M-P players are now at Juanita and you can see them play Camas Saturday. We saw Issaquah in week 1 as they rolled up Heritage 41-13. The Eagles only 2 losses are to Skyline and Eastlake, both in the 4A playoffs. They also beat a good Liberty team 27-21 in week 2. #6 Bothell (8-2) at #4 Kentwood (10-0)

Another of the best games this weekend. Bothell knocked off Union 42-21 last week, the first non-Bellevue team to ever send Union home in the playoffs. Kentwood rolled up Heritage last week. It will be Power running of Bothell vs speedy runners of Kentwood. Bellarmine Prep (9-1) at Arlington (7-2)

Bellarmine Prep’s only loss was to Olympia, 37-30 back in week 8. The Lions have scored 30+ in 5 games, including 33-13 over Central Kitsap who beat Eastlake and almost beat Skyline last week. Arlington won the Wesco 4A. Richland (9-1) at #3 Ferris (10-0)

Ferris seems to be even better than last season when the Saxons played in the 4A state title game. Former Woodland and Batlte Ground coach Jim Sharkey sure has that program doing well. Ferris has outscored their opponents 376-94 this season. Richland is rolling as well. Richland won at Evergreen 34-14 back in week 3. The Bombers have won their last 5 and knocked off Gonzaga Prep 21-7 last week. Newport (6-4) at #6 Chiawana (9-0)

In only their 2nd year, Chiawana is looking for a Union Titans like playoff run. The Riverhawks went 1-8 last year, but are rolling this year under former Pasco head coach Steve Graff. Chiawana has allowed 7 or less points in 5 games this year. All 4 of Newport’s loses are to playoff teams, Bothell, Eastlake, Skyline and Issaquah. 3A
Meadowdale (7-3) at #6 Lakes (9-1)

Lakes has won 7 in a row since a 28-21 loss at Capital. The Lancers have outscored their opponents 276-93 in those 7 games. Lakes beat Evergreen 54-15 in week 2. Meadowdale has scored 40+ in their last 3 games. #4 Juanita (9-1) at #3 Camas (10-0)

Juanita at Camas should be one of the best games this weekend. Juanita’s lone loss was to #1 Bellevue. Camas is looking for the schools first ever playoff win. #8 Liberty (7-3) at Mount Si (6-4)

A lot of people picked Liberty to play for another state title after almost knocking off Bellevue in last years titel game. The Patriots looked the part with a week 1 39-34 win over Skyline, but have since lost to Issaquah, Juanita and Bellevue, all playoff teams. Liberty won 4 road playoff games last year on their way to the finals. Liberty defeated Mount Si 38-22 back in week 5. Mount Si. has flown under the radar in the 3A KingCo. The Wildcats have lost to Bellevue, Juanita, Liberty and Bothell this year. Timberline (7-3) at #1 Bellevue (9-1)

Timberline rallied from 28-7 down to beat Mountain View 29-28 last week. But come on, it’s Bellevue they will win. Ferndale (8-2) at #10 O’Dea (9-1)

O’Dea has won 9 in a row since a week 1 loss to Capital including a 28-13 week 2 win over Ferndale. The Irish have scored 40+ in 5 of those wins. Ferndale also lost in week 5 to 2A Lynden 35-21. The Golden Eagles have won 5 in a row and put up 40+ in 4 of those games. Franklin (8-2) at #2 Capital (10-0)

Capital defeated Nathan Hale 73-7 last week in the preliminary round. Expect a similar result this week. Franklin has no shot. University (6-4) at #7 Mount Spokane (8-1)

Mt. Spokane has wins over Central Valley, Gonzaga Prep and Mead, all 4A GSL schools. Only 4A Ferris defeated the Wildcats. Mt. Spokane also already defeated University 42-23 back in week 5. Kelso (7-3) at #5 Kamiakin (10-0)

Kamiakin has put up big numbers all season passing the football. The Braves only close game of the season was a 30-15 win over Eastmont in week 9 with the 3A Big Nine title on the line. Keslo played a scrappy game at Camas in week 9 giving the Papermakers all they could handle, but still came up short 24-13. THE NO FLY ZONE will need to be on patrol Saturday if they hope to shut down Joey Jensen and Tim White. 2A
Burlington-Edison (7-3) at #7 Sequim (9-1)

Sequim has won 9 in a row since their week 2 loss to Meridian 54-16. The Huskies have scored 494 points in their 9 wins. Burlington-Edison started the season 6-0 before losing 3straight to end the regular season. #3 Tumwater (8-1) at #2 Lynden (10-0)

Lynden has won 22 games in a row, including the 2009 2A state championship, and last lost in week 1 of 2009 to Archbishop Murphy. Tumwater has won 8 in a row since a 27-21 week 1 loss at 3A Olympia. East Valley (Spk) (4-5) at Clarkston (6-3)

East Valley knocked off #7 Ellensburg 32-14 to qualify for the playoffs Tuesday. The Eagles lost at Clarkston 21-6 back in week 5. #6 Othello (7-3) at #5 Prosser (9-1)

Prosser has won 9 straight since their 28-0 week 1 loss at 3A Kamiakin. The Mustangs have out scored their opponents 409-75 in those 9 games including 82-0 over Ephrata and 28-14 over Othello in week 3. Anacortes (6-3) at Lindbergh (7-2)

Lindbergh has scored 40+ in all 7 of their wins. Anacortes lost 27-14 to #2 Lynden in week 9. Foster (7-3) at Mark Morris (7-3)

Mark Morris knocked off #9 Centralia 20-18 last week in Longview. Foster lost to Lindbergh 47-7 in week 9. #4 W.F. West (9-1) at #1 Archbishop Murphy (10-0)

W.F. West needed a FG in the final minute of the game to escape Longview with a 12-10 win over R.A. Long last week. Archbishop Murphy has scored 40+ in 8 of their games and 35+ in all 10. Port Angeles (9-1) at Interlake (3-8)

Port Angels started the season 8-0 before a 41-0 loss to Sequim in week 9. Interlake is a 2A school that has to play league games with the 3A KingCo teams. They have lost to Liberty, Mount Si, Bellevue and Juanita, all 3A playoff teams.

Ferris Outguns Skyview 46-41 At Joe Albi To Advance To Titel Game
A magical run for the Skyview Storm has come to an end.
The Strom put up 41 points on the road in Spokane, but that was not enough as WSU bound Connor Halliday threw 3 TD passes to lead the Ferris Saxons to a 46-41 win in the WIAA 4A Semifinals.
FB Johnny Barrett tied the game at 7 with his 1 yard run, and Ellis Henderson took a short pass from Dodge later in the second and took it 59 yards for the electric TD and tied the game at 14-14 with 3:12 in the half.
After the the wheels fell off for Skyview, a quick Ferris drive made it 20-14, then Skyview there an interception that was ran back 36 yards as time expired, and the Storm found themselves down 27-14 at the half.
Skyview was not about to quit however.
Henderson took another pass from Dodge and scooted down the sidelines for the score, this time from 41 yards out to cut the lead to 27-21.
After another Ferris score, Matt Spears capped off an 11 play 90 yard Storm drive with a 1 yard run keeping up score for score with the Saxons 5 seconds into the 4th quarter as the score was 33-28 Ferris.
Then, it got exciting.
Ferris scored on a 1 play 49 yard run to jump back up 39-28. Skyview went 45 yards in 5 plays when Dodge hit Karl Graves from 5 yards out to make it 39-34.
After each team exchanged punts, Ferris drove 64 yards in only 4 plays, as Halliday hit Jordan Tonani from on a 24 yard catch and run, to put the Saxons up 46-34 with only 4:04 remaining in the game.
Skyview was able to score, but it took them 17 plays and 4:02 as Dodge hit Spears from 5 yards out.
However with only 2 seconds left in the game, there was little room for error as they attempted an onside kick down 46-41.
The kick was recovered by the Saxons as time expired.
The game was very exciting to watch. Hats off to Skyview on a very impressive season.

Turnovers Doom Titans In Semifinals As Bellevue Tops Union 19-13
The Union Titans defense played one heck of a football game tonight.
The mighty Bellevue Wolverines were held without an offensive TD but still defeated Union 19-13 in the WIAA Semifinals.
After trailing 6-0 at the half, Union gave up a 97 yard KO return for a TD to Braynden Van Ackeren and found themselves in a 13-0 hole early in the third.
Union QB Brandon Weller found Mitch Saylor from 35 yards out to cut the lead to 13-6 before the extra point was blocked.
Two more FG by Sciabica and the Titans were down 19-6 with only 6:10 in the game.
The Titans were able to drive 62 yards in 6 plays when Nataniel Penaranda scored on a 4 yard run to cut the lead to 19-13 with 1:19 to go.
The Union onside magice however was all gone as the kick went right into the hands of Van Ackeren and the win to the Wolverines.
With the win Bellevue improves to 11-2. The Wolverines will play Liberty next Friday for the WIAA 3A Championship.
Union drops to 11-2 with the loss. The Titans season is over.

All You NEED To Know About The Ferris Saxons
Saturday afternoon, 1:00 pm at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane, the 2009 4A GSHL champion Skyview Storm take on the 9-3 Ferris Saxons in the Semifinals of the WIAA state football playoffs.
So, just who are the Ferris Saxons?
Ferris High School is located in Spokane and are members of the Greater Spokane League.
The Saxons are coached by forth year head coach Jim Sharkey and finished 3rd in the GSL. Ferris finished league play at 5-3 and are currently 9-3 overall. The Saxons last lost back in week 8 42-20 to Lewis & Clark. Ferris has won 4 games in a row since the loss to the Tigers.
Coach Sharkey was the head coach at Battle Ground and Woodland prior to taking the job in Spokane.
Ferris finished in a 3 way tie for third place in the GSL (after back-to-back GSL titles in ’07 & ’08) and defeated Gonzaga Prep and University in mini games to take the 3rd seed. They then qualified for the state playoffs with a 21-10 road win over Wenatchee on Nov 6th, then defeated Kamiakin 41-16 at home in the First Round. Saturday the Saxons again hit the road and defeated Eisenhower 24-14 in Yakima.
The Saxons run a spread offense like that of Skyview. They are led by Senior QB #12 Connor Halliday (6’4″ 190) with his 3,486 yards passing and 34 TD on the season. Connor has thrown for at least 230 yards in each game this season. When the Saxons went to California to take on Esperanza High School, Halliday put on quite the show with 420 yards passing and 5 TD. In the Saxons’s three post season wins, he is 66/109 for 853 yards and 9 TD with just one pick last week. Halliday was a back-up QB for Lewis & Clark when they won the 4A state championship in 2007 prior to transferring to Ferris that same season.
Halliday’s favorite target has been Sr. WR #82 Jason Bates (6’4″ 185). Bates has 17 TD’s and 1360 receiving yards in 2009. Six times Bates has had games with over 100 yards receiving this season, however he has been held to under 100 in the last 4 games where he has a total of 206 yards and 5 TD. Jr. WR’s #4 Beau Bozett (6′ 0″155) and Jordan Tonani (6’0″ 195) are always there when Bates is not open. Bozett has 725 receiving yards and 6 TD while Tonani has 663 yards receiving and 8 TD’s.

Like Skyview, Ferris also has a solid running game led by Sr. RB #32 Gage Orosco (6’0″ 195). Orosco has 946 rushing yards on the season and 6 TD. In the last five games, Orosco has been there to keep other defenses honest as he ran for 545 yards over that stretch. He has also been there in the passing game. This season he has three games with over 100 yards receiving including last week’s Quarterfinals win where he had 13 catches for 150 yards and 2 TD.
One of the main reasons for the Saxons’ success on offense has been the play of their offensive line. They are anchored by a pair of highly tauted linemen in Sr. #57 Kjelby Oiland (6’4″ 255) and Sr. #72 Trevor Poole (6’5″ 250). Oiland is listed on scout.com as a 2 star athlete while Poole is 1 star. Both lineman are rated higher than Mark Morris (Air Force commit) Jake Welch.
The Saxons are led defensively by Sr. LB #19 Peter Anderson (6’0″ 165), Soph. LB #50 Chris Beaulauier (6’0″ 180), Sr. LB #38 Brendon Olson (5’11″ 170), Jr. DB #5 Riley Stockton (6’4″ 190), Jr. DB #20 Cody Sorensen (5’9″ 170), Sop. DL #16 Drew Sharkey (6’2″ 218) along with Poole and Oiland on the line and Bozett at DB.
