Evergreen Hires Charles Anthony As The Plainsmen’s New Head Football Coach

February 18, 2009

New Evergreen Head Football Coach Charles Anthony was 42-15 in 5 seasons as Head Coach of Cheyenne High School in North Las Vegas Nevada.

Charles Anthony has been hired as the new head football coach at Evergreen High School.

Anthony spent the past 5 seasons at Cheyenne High School in North Las Vegas Nevada leading the Desert Shields to a 42-15 mark and appearances in the state playoffs 4 times.

Evergreen’s former coach Tom Smythe stepped down following the ‘08 season after two seasons with the Plainsmen. Smythe went 13-6 (although he was only 5-4 last season) before returning back to Oregon to coach at his old school Lakeridge.

Cheyenne principal Jeff Geihs decided on January 14th to “go in a different direction” and decided not to bring Anthony back as head coach. The move shocked many in the North Las Vegas area including Anthony.

The decision also did not  sit well with many of the players parents. According to The Las Vegas Review-Journal, “Shawn Spencer, a Cheyenne parent and booster club president, said approximately 20 players approached Geihs’ office Friday to discuss the firing but were turned away.”

When asked about Coach Anthony, Las Vegas Sun reporter Ray Brewer said, “The guy won football games,” and also added that Anthony “made the most out of what he had.”

Although no official statement has been made as to why Geihs let Anthony go, the general consensus is just that the two did not see eye-to-eye. Geihs himself said of Anthony, “Coach Anthony is a good man, and his heart’s in the right place.”

Anthony will bring a new look to the field for the Plainsmen next season. Running the double wing at Cheyenee, his team ran the ball over 85% of the time in 2008. The Desert Shields only attempted 73 passes in 12 games, or 6 passes per game. Compare that to Evergreen last season where QB Marvin Thomas attempted 70 passes in 3 games alone (Heritage, Battle Ground, Mountain View).

A standout defensive back for the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels from 1987-1990 and a graduate of Western High School in North Las Vegas, Anthony brings what Brewer calls a “roll up your selves” attitude to Clark County.

Gshlfootball.com has contacted Coach Anthony and is hoping to have a full Q&A article up soon.

as an Evergreen football player I’m very excited about the hiring of Coach Anthony. He will bring discipline and a very important aspect of toughness. We will be a very young team next year and I feel that people have already counted us out. I have no idea what next season will entale as far as wins and losses go. But I can promise that this team will work harder than any team in the state and we will pride ourselves on our toughness. Regardless of what anyone says, Evergreen football will be a perrenial power again in the near future. I have nothing but respect for the other teams in our league and in this area. I know that Evergreen is looked down on by other schools and people in this community. I will be a senior next year, I promise that this school has only the best intentions and we do a lot around the community to try and better ourselves and help people. I bleed green and gold forever, Evergreen football is here to stay.

As a Thunder fan I wish you all the best. Even though we are rivals I know what you will be going through with a new coach and a new offense. Evergreen will look alot like Ft. Vancouver offensively as Mr. Anthony will bring the double wing offense to Evergreen. In Las Vegas his teams ran the ball over 80% of the time which will be a culture shock to many Plainsman fans and parents. There will be many haters out there because you will not be running the spread offense and if you lose games the heat will be turned up on Coach Anthony and his staff. I will say this though…it will bring your team closer together and you will be more family oriented as teammates. In that double wing offense everyone has to do their job on every play or basically the play fails 90% of the time. But if all 11 players can execute you can basically own the other team and eat up the clock while getting the “W”. Being able to get 3 to 4 yards a carry against defenses that know your running the ball can be very difficult as they will stack the line, stunt, blitz to cause havoc in your backfield. This is what happenned during Beyer’s coaching days running his Wing T offense at Mountain View. However the players loved Beyer as a coach then and still do now even though he is not the head coach anymore. I wish you the best of luck and your attitude about serving the community better is right on!! You are on the right track!! As a Thunder fan I do not look down on Evergreen and I have nothing but respect for you and your school. It’s players/students like you who make a positive impact and a big difference in how the community views high school football and sports no matter who you play for. God Bless and take care! Have a great senior year!

Hey this is Marvin Thomas,,i was the Quarterback For Evergreen last year,,,i seen that he passed the ball only 73 times the whole season and i passed 70 in three games,,,football is a team sport and if i threw the ball 40 times the whole season it wouldnt matter to me,,,i love the game of football and i am ready to try new thing with the new coach,,who knows what may happen next year, but me being a senior next will only make me train harder to get a spot on the feild as the Quarterback and try to lead my team into games knowing that we can win. this new coach has a wining reputaion and we will not tarnish that,,,we will be a young team but it is a fact that young teams can get the job done,,look at union,,,but as for Evergreen football you will see us climb up this slop we are on, we will work this new style of play..Marvin Thomas….May God bless you all,,,,

  5. brownie hound on August 10th, 2009 8:13 am

Wow. When Union spanks you this year Jamaree and tears are rolling down your face, be sure to reread what you wrote. Your brown nosing will get you and the other Plainsman battling for fifth with Battleground. Union Pride.

What do you know about Evergreen this year, and about coach Anthony? I know that kid shouldnt have been talking trash about how other teams will get killed by Evergreen. Dont listen to him hes a freshman, he hasnt even stepped inside the school yet. but we are working really hard and expecting to be have some success this year.

  7. GSHL Fan on August 12th, 2009 7:28 am

Brownie Hound. The double wing offense is a very difficult offense to defend with good athletes and speed, and that is what Coach Anthony has at Evergreen along with size. Union is a very talented and powerful team but they are not invincible. Evergreen may not win the league title this year while they learn and perfect their new offense, but they will compete hard and make it challenging for all their opponents to beat them.

  8. brownie hound on August 12th, 2009 11:04 am

Union 38 Evergreen 3. Union would put up more but “the great double-wing” chewed up clock. Coach Anthony gone in two years. 4 and 14 will not cut it. Face the facts. Frosh team over the past two years has won 5 games, JV in that time has won 7. The gleam of Evergreen has left and went to the U.

  9. rsdlfjasldj on August 13th, 2009 1:56 pm

I go to Evergreen, most of our varsity players are juniors. And a lot of the starters will be juniors also. You said that the freshman at Evergreen the past two years have one only 5 games and that is not true. two years ago the freshman team was 7-1 losing to the Skyview JV team and beating a JV team by three touchdowns. But it is true the Evergreen JV team hasnt been very good one reason that happened is because last year coach Smythe had about 8 very good sophmores up at the varsity level, while most didnt get much playing time they shouldve been down at JV. Im not saying were going to kill everyone but dont count us out to have a successful year.

  10. rsdlfjasldj on August 13th, 2009 1:58 pm

also Unions JV team wasnt very good and nxt year Evergreen will be very good returning a lot of juniors.

  11. Local Coach on August 13th, 2009 3:44 pm

rsdlfjasldj you’re right. You can’t base what might the future success of a varsity team on the W-L records of the J.V. and freshmen teams. You best Senior through Sophs are going to be your varsity players while the JV’s are a mix of players who either don’t get playing time durring the varsity game or are not at the abilty or experience level of the varisty. The Freshmen level is meant for the youngest players to learn the system and adjust to the High School game. That is why there is no official league titles or playoffs for JV and Freshmen teams.

I have listened to Adults and kids in the county give their opinion of what they think Evergreen is going to be in the years to come….simply put they will always be in position to win. It just the type of kids that go to Evergreen.

New coach new O…..Kids will always run, but the ones that ran were not about team they were about themselves and no mater where they go that will not change. If it gets tough at their new location don’t think they will stick it out, they will run from there too.

Now the Double Wing is a very different type of O for this part of the of the world and most people who really know football know that is a very hard O to stop. The one that bad mouth it really don’t know football. Evergreen is going to be tougher than most of you think. Team will not get all the chances to score like with last years team. The Double Wing is set up to keep the ball for 7 to 12 play drives and then score. So if you think Evergreen will just lay down and let you beat them it will be a long night for you.

I’m sure most of the good teams ae already working on trying to beat the Double Wing.

  13. rsdlfjasldj on August 14th, 2009 6:07 pm

Its true Evergreens mentality of the new double wing offense is to grind out yard against the defense chewing up the clock. Also again a lot of the Evergreen team will be very young. Evergreen will play hard a work hard and will compete this year.

  14. Jamaree Jones on August 23rd, 2009 3:24 pm

wow brounie hound yo just got owned u should just go back 2 yo school and shut it after this year union will suck cuz their varsity team is full seniors and evergreen well juniors will be seniors and we will be a young team so b ready for the double wing t

This brownie hound kid is a trip…..KIDS! (there should an age limit for this) I know a lot of the kids on Unions football team and a lot of them I have known since they were in grade school. good kids good football team. They don’t need brownie hound to talk that mess about other teams to make Union look good There are a lot of very good athletes in Clark county and you don’t hear the good ones talking mess. The good one will just come to play….Makes you think how good this brownie hound really is. who is he trying to convince us or himself……..

It’s nice to see this many good teams in Clark County for once…….but the test is to go up North and beat someone.
