Experts Picks – Week 5

September 30, 2009

experts-picks-week-5We run the site, so in our book, that makes us experts!

In Week 5 Bryan went 11-1 while Mike went 9-3. We both missed on Camas. Oops! Neither of us saw Ellis Henderson returning the opening kickoff 99 yards for a TD to start the game in our crystal ball. In the 2 games we disagreed on, Mike was 0-2. Bryan is now 35-13 overall (73%) while Mike is 34-14 (71%).

This week we agree on 6 games while 3 games we are split on. The Woodland/R.A. Long game is possible the most intriguing game of the week, as neither wants to fall a game back so early. Union and Camas will look to both start 1-0 in league in the 3A. The entire 4A league schedule will be a dog fight as only 2 teams qualify for the post season. 2 losses could mean no post season. No one wants to get one this week.

If you think you know better than we do, then simply leave a comment below with your 12 winners. Anyone who correctly picks all 13 games, will be entered into a drawing for a $20 iTunes gift card. (Max one winner per week. You must provide a valid email when leaving a comment so you can receive your prize. Picks must be posted by 6:59pm on Thursday, October 1sy 2009)

The BG over Heritage choice by both Mike and Bryan baffle me. Sure, Heritage is 1-3 and BG is 3-1…but both teams were in the same position last season before meeting each other in the first game of league play. Heritage won 34-6.. BG scored on 30+ yard field goals. Both teams are 1-1 versus common opponents. Sure, BG lost to Camas by one point and Heritage lost to Camas by 14. But…if that is the only reason why BG gets the nod here, I don’t get it. Let’s look at strength of schedule. Heritage: Camas (top 10 3A), WF West (top 10 2A), CR, Union (top 10 3A). BG: CR, Prairie, Hockinson, Camas (top 10 3A). WF West could beat any of BG’s opponents except (maybe!) Camas. BG has their “3 headed monster,” but those guys were there last year also. BG has no QB and no OLine. After watching their highlights vs CR, my opinion is BG is undisciplined. Their “athletes” are running all over the field out of control. Heritage got physically overpowered by Union defensively, but they were in position to make plays all night long. I was at that game from start to finish. They had the opportunity to make big plays throughout the game and didn’t. Despite being physically overwhelmed, they stayed disciplined. They just couldn’t match up with Union. I see it differently this week. The question is whether or not the offense and the kicking game can work in synch with the defense, which has been the strength of this team over the last two seasons. In other words, Heritage wins this one in a close ball game. The Heritage D forces more turnovers than BG’s D: this will be the #1 factor in the game.

Game of the week will be HHS vs BG in a tough contest. SVHS will blow out MVHS without question. If anyone went to the Evergreen vs Kelso game, please weigh in on these two teams. Camas big over Bay as expected.

  16. babyherbstreit on October 2nd, 2009 9:42 am

Evergreen looked horrible. Kelso looked physical. Kelso looked good running the ball, and surprisingly, Evergreen looked terrible in that aspect. One thing is for sure, the Plainsmen used some interesting formations. I remember watching that state championship team on their way to the Dome…this is NOT that same program.

“this is NOT that same program.”…<— Thank you Mr. Tom Smythe!

Not the same program thanks to Tom Smythe AND Union!

I think Anthony will turn egreen back into a consistant winner. Next year might be rough for them again, but after that I expect them to give alot of people trouble.

  20. peegreen on October 2nd, 2009 2:09 pm

Consistent winner and giving a lot of people trouble are two different things entirely.

BG hung tough but couldn’t stay with Heritage. BG was up by 10 pts at half but gave up 2 quick scores to start the second half. Pulled within 35-30 but gave up another score to Heritage in the 4th to make it 43-30. BG then plugged in a late score to make it close and Heritage closed them out. Game was penalty ridden and very frustrating to watch for both teams. Not exactly disciplined football but a win that Heritage needed badly none the less. The effort was there for both teams. Good job TWOLVES, your fans are proud!

dang we were so close. couple plays here and there and we win the game. so much for a blowout though. hopefully we get more respect after this game

  24. HHS Alumni on October 3rd, 2009 12:21 am

    Way to play tough MVHS!

  25. dtpfd5 on October 3rd, 2009 12:24 am

We all love the offence its the excitement. We all love the enterceptions, the kick off returns, and the sacks. But folks that 60 yard touchdown, that 7 second drop back by the quarterback (that resulted in a 25 yard catch), or that pass rush that kept the quarterback scrambling all night deserve credit also. I,m done with this web site. Lets see your stars shine without a line. Both offence and defence.

  26. Egreen on October 7th, 2009 6:49 pm

Evergreen is in transition….Plain and simple! TRANSITION! I remember at the start of this season telling my self it we win 2 games we are doing great. NEXT year we will win 4-5 games then the following year – well I’ll just say we take it all. Every ounce of pure Victory. Then the bitchin can start that Evergreen is again the only force to reckon with in the Greater Saint Helens League.

So Says Egreen……It has been said….

  27. Snaggletooth on October 7th, 2009 7:10 pm

Egreen, nice game against Banks, or was it Tillamook or Washougal or Hockinson? Anyway, I hope you are right because you have excellent athletes and it all comes down to discipline and execution. Keep working hard.

Got something to say?
