First Round Playoff Matchups

Written by Bryan Levesque on November 8, 2009

What a weekend of football in Southwest Washington.

The GSHL had 9 schools playing in preliminary games this weekend and 5 of them won to advance to the WIAA state playoffs.

In 2008 only 3 GSHL schools made the playoffs and in 2007 2 schools advanced.

Three games had to go to a running clock, as Union, Skyview and Mark Morris all scored 50+ in their wins. Columbia River also won big up in Seattle. R.A. Long was the only winner in a close game, as the Lumberjacks won their first post season game in school history 16-14 over Tumwater.

Camas led #4 Liberty 22-17 midway through the 3rd quarter, but the Papermakers could not slow down the Patriots and lost 33-22. Heritage hung with South Kitsap and made a game of it all night, but in the end the Timberwolves also came up short in a 38-21 road loss. Hockinson, and Woodland had it rough as they lost big on Friday night.

Wouldn’t that be something if Columbia River somehow knocked off Meadowdale and faced Union in the quarterfinals for a trip to the Tacoma Dome on the line. What was that Union/CR score again this year?

  2. CR Football on November 8th, 2009 1:40 pm

Columbia River isnt the same team Union played against this season

  3. Oh Man on November 8th, 2009 1:43 pm

    yeah its not gonna happen

  4. sky'sthelimit on November 8th, 2009 2:09 pm

  5. kings on November 8th, 2009 4:11 pm

the wiaa website is incorrect . they are fixing it.

  6. John O on November 8th, 2009 5:38 pm

CR Football we would gladly play you again at this point and im sorry to tell you the outcome would be the same or worse. IF i recall correctly it was 45-0 at halftime? yikes. maybe this time the running close wouldn’t start until a later point in the 2nd period.

  7. John O on November 8th, 2009 5:38 pm

    clock*

  8. CR Fan on November 8th, 2009 6:20 pm

Now that River is the only one left in GSHL 3A is Union going to start talking smack about us too? Get over yourselfs!!

  9. CR Fan on November 8th, 2009 6:22 pm

I’m sorry for calling out all of Union that was wrong I should have directed my comment only to “John O” my bad.

  10. swwash.fannnn on November 8th, 2009 6:39 pm

Columbia river great job pulling for you next game
    Go CR and Union

  11. SkyR#1fanCapCoug on November 8th, 2009 9:07 pm

I am looking forward to going down to Vancouver to see my Capital Cougars take on the Union Titans. This should be a good game.

  12. CR Football on November 8th, 2009 9:49 pm

John O- Never did i say River would beat Union, i was just saying that River is starting to click, and it would be a more competitive game than it was last time

  13. Ketto on November 8th, 2009 10:20 pm

Enjoy your freebie, CR, you guys won’t make it past the first round. Camas should be in your place :)

  14. CR Fan on November 8th, 2009 10:55 pm

Ketto here’s a passage I’d like you to hear, ” Never argue with idiots, they will drag you down to there level and beat you with experience” so I’ll stay out of this one.

  15. DCGardner on November 8th, 2009 11:11 pm

The only idiotic thing in this situation is Camas having to face a tougher team when they stomped you into the ground.

  16. CR Fan on November 8th, 2009 11:22 pm

DCGardner I agree with you. Camas should have played NH. But that’s not Rivers fault. So to disrespect and trash talk about River isn’t right. Everyone is aware that River is the underdog. If you don’t want to wish us luck then fine. It only confirms the above passage.

  17. Papermakerpride on November 9th, 2009 12:12 am

Yea its a bummer we didnt play NH. I want union to go far. Maybe not win state just because we have a little rivalry . But it would be cool for them to get the vancouver area more attention and respect. Union football is playing the same role as camas soccer . I dont think SW washington gets enough respect on a statewide basis. I think its time that changes. Gotta start beating teams like liberty to get it though….

  18. just a fan on November 9th, 2009 7:57 am

    Papermakerpride, DCGardner, all Camas Whiners
This is a football site, not futbol.
As for Camas still _itching about it’s draw, even the coach, who usually stays on point was griping in the Seattle times, guy’s, your road was no harder than Unions last year who had to play the states top 3 teams to win state, stop _itching, congratulate River and Union for still being in the hunt, it is just the luck of the draw, you did not have to play any #1 teams.
Now Congrats an a good season, look forward to seeing you next year, and fall in line and root for Columbia River, Union and Skyview, good gracious, never have I heard so much whining, even the Columbian reporter spent more time on whining about the draw than they gave Columbia River for winning their game, pathetic! maybe that’s why they keep loosing readers.

  19. Titan fan on November 9th, 2009 10:18 am

Love the quote CR fan, hit the nail on the head when dealing with most of the Camas fans.

Hey guys, nothing CR can do about the draw. Stop being babies, accept that your season is over and maybe wish them some luck. Yes, you deserved a better draw, yes, your the better team, but it didn’t work out that way.

Good luck CR, Union, Skyview and any other local teams.

  20. GSHL Football fan on November 9th, 2009 11:52 am

Union game is set for Friday at 7:30 pm! Lets all get together and support our local teams and show the people up north what SW Washington football is all about.

  21. GSHL spectator on November 9th, 2009 1:28 pm

I’m curious as to how high the competition is in Capital high school’s league… I think Union will come out on top against Capital but on the other hand no one really knows about Capital… last I heard they run the Wing-T but that was a while ago so who knows. If Union keeps playing the way they are playing, there is no doubt they should be in the dome again this season. Go Union. By the way that #42 is a freak for an athlete and I love that 5 man running back rotation they got goin on… what a freaking powerhouse. : )

  22. Papermakerpride on November 9th, 2009 3:31 pm

I never whined. I was pointing out that sw washington doesnt get very much respect. Did i offend anyone saying that? If so sorry? Go gshl

  23. DCGardner on November 9th, 2009 3:53 pm

    Just a fan,

Get over yourself, the system is flawed and I don’t like it.

  24. CR Fan on November 9th, 2009 3:57 pm

I just wanted to thank Bryan & Mike for this great website. You guys do a great job. Thanks

  25. SkyviewJoe on November 9th, 2009 6:43 pm

Skyview will play Friday against Bethel at 7:30 at Kiggins Bowl. Go Storm! Good luck Union and River.

  26. pale on November 9th, 2009 10:05 pm

good luck to MM and RAL too

  27. twoj on November 10th, 2009 9:43 am

camas’ fans wouldnt be called out so much if their comments werent so ignorant. it seems like all they do is complain, or place the blame elsewhere, rather than congratulate the kids who actually went out there and played there tails off. no one needs an explanation about how camas lost and how they should have won. get over yourselves for real, its ridiculous. bad draw this year for sure, but it happens. go gshl this year, good luck to everyone left.

  28. moepa on November 10th, 2009 11:33 am

Having played against Olympic and Cap. Cap. beat Olympic about the same amount as Union did. I think Union will win but Cap. will give them a good game. Oh and by the way Capital runs the “I” this year and has a good running back in Sunberg (I believe he has 30 TDs this season) and qb Everson. GO COUGS!

  29. Just Sayin' on November 10th, 2009 10:27 pm

30 td’s …hmmm…think I would have heard of him. Capital is a good team, no question. It will be a very competitive game this week. I give Union the edge, especially being @ home. Go U!

  30. SkyR#1fanCapCoug on November 11th, 2009 9:32 pm

First post on here and let me say as a fan of my alma matter (and a fan of high school football), I am glad I’m planning on making the trip down from western Olympia to see my Cougars take on a formidable opponent and a terrific fan-base in Union. I saw them last year in the Tacoma Dome throttle a traditionally good Lakes team and their fans (especially band) were extremely loud.

Moepa… Capital won 35-7 against Olympic, Union won 56-10….I wouldn’t say by the same.

I also give Union the edge at home. I hope my Cougs can make it a competitive game, we should definetly bring more of a fight than Union.

  31. SkyR#1fanCapCoug on November 12th, 2009 12:24 am

Whoops I meant to say more of a fight than Olympic.

If there is anybody who can give me some good tips on parking and anything else I may want to know on McKenzie Stadium. I’ve been down there once, but it was 6 years ago and I was still in high school back then.

I am a photographer from Kent Valley Sports (www.kentvalleysports.org) so I do plan on showing up to the game with my camera in hand roaming the Capital sideline…wearing my red and yellow, taking pictures of the game, and eventually post them up online.

  33. Bryan Levesque on November 12th, 2009 12:37 am

McKenzie is the nicest stadium down here. (not talking about turn) The parking is good just click on the Union page and the image that says where is McKenzie stadium. follow the directions and you are set.

When you get in the parking lot, take a left and go down the hill to the side of the stadium. The lower (West) entrance is where you want to be, the road side is to your left from there. Enjoy the game. Hopefully it is a frustrating ride home, but you get a lot of good pictures!

  34. SkyR#1fanCapCoug on November 12th, 2009 2:39 pm

We’ve been close, but no cigar with the top teams we’ve played (O’Dea, Olympia, and Timberline). Usually, I’m not happy with moral victories, but anything less than a blowout would mean I could have a ride home frustration free, unless I-5 traffic picks up when I get on the highway :) . A win in Union would probably be the 2nd biggest true road win I’ve ever seen (2nd to our win in 2002 over a then-undefeated Bothell at Pop Keeney in the 2nd round of the 4A playoffs….if you’ve ever been to Pop Keeney to see a Bothell game….you’ll know why I ranked this as Capital’s biggest true road win in the playoffs.)

  35. Fan of the U on November 12th, 2009 3:12 pm

SkyR#1fanCapCoug – I-5 south to I-205….take Mill Plain exit and go East…..there is a Starbucks with a drive-thru about 6 blocks off the freeway. If you are hungry, I recommend Patrick’s Hawaiian Cafe at 123rd and Mill Plain. If you just want to grab a sandwich, try Seize the Bagel in the 13300 block of Mill Plain.
Go North (right turn) on 136th Avenue to E.18th Street. You should see the stadium lights. You can access the parking (directly behind the Middle School) from E.18th Street or if you just stay on 136th. Get there a little early because there will be a great playoff atmosphere. Drive safely !!

  36. Fan of the U on November 12th, 2009 3:13 pm

my bad – North is a left turn on 136th…

  37. SkyR#1fanCapCoug on November 13th, 2009 2:03 am

I’ll either get my own food or get some at the game. I’ll likely get lost snopping around town looking for a bite to eat.

I’ll probably get to I-5 from the Olympia exit around 3:15-3:30, and it’s probably a 2-hr commute down at that point. I will hope the traffic jame\s staffic stays up in Pierce County. I’m happy we don’t have to go down any further to Camas because my first look at the WIAA brackets had the game at Doc Harris stadium, for some reason.

I’ll be in my Capital hat (red hat with a white C on it) and yellow sweater (or shirt if it’s not raining…..lol at that thought) if anybody dares hunt me down.

Bryan L….. I’ll try and get teasers on to Kent Valley Sports when I get home late after the game, but because of that, they’re not coming until Saturday.

Here’s to an exciting game! Hope everybody is ready and injury free.

  38. SkyR#1fanCapCoug on November 14th, 2009 2:17 am

Just returned home from the Union – Capital game. Just like I said on the “All you need to know about Capital” forum….Union is the real deal and my Cougs didn’t play as well as I’d like and Union is the team that will take advantage of that. We needed a near-perfect game to have a shot and that clearly wasn’t the case. Union should be right back to the Dome. Best of luck to the Titans.

Got something to say?
