Fort Vancouver 2009 Spring Practice Breakdown
June 20, 2009
As spring practice comes to a close, what are your initial thoughts about your team?
Coach Szueber – We are very excited about the season! We have a great spring camp as it concludes with Thursday’s practice. Then we head to the Gold Beach Football Camp for the second straight year this Saturday for a week.
Who are 3-4 of your returning players from last year’s Varsity team?
Coach Szueber – Our top returnees include Senior John Chen, who is receiving letters from many schools. He was a 1st team All-GSHL linebacker last year, and splits some time at fullback and tight end on offense. In addition, 2nd team all-GSHL linebacker Marcus Bush, who will be a Junior, is a stud who also sees some time at running back. Patrick Crawford, a Junior who has started at defensive end since the middle of his freshman year will be a two way starter again this year. The 6′1″, 235 lb. Junior will move from fullback to Offensive tackle and will anchor our line. Isaiah Thompson, who played free safety last year, will also be the featured back in our double-wing offense and could be Fort’s first 1,000 yard rusher in many years! We also return both of our quarterbacks from last year, senior Josh Beaulieu and junior Richard Vansiclen.
What players were not on the Varsity last season who you expect to be impact players this season?
Coach Szueber – We have a couple of newcomers as well. Michel Dunlap, who is a 6′1″, 240 lb. senior who runs a 4.8 40, will be our fullback and play some at middle linebacker. He was a transfer from David Douglas last year, but came out late and played sparingly at the end of the year on the offensive line. Sophomore Robert Bain will do some running and play some linebacker at times. Senior Marcos Johnson looks to play in the defensive secondary and may start as one of the running backs as well.
About how many players are you expecting to turn out in the fall?
Coach Szueber – We expect to have about 100 players out in the Fall, including freshmen. The numbers are increasing as excitement builds in our program.
What are your goals as a team for the 2009 season?
Coach Szueber – Our expectations are high this year. We expected to compete last year, but lost 7 starters to injury! This year, if we stay healthy we WILL compete with everyone in our league and will take one of the 3 playoff spots in the tough 3A GSHL!
