Game Recap – Washougal 42 R.A. Long 14

Written by Bryan Levesque on October 1, 2011

Washougal did not skip a beat Friday night as they began league play at Fishback Stadium. The Panthers are now 5-0 for the first time since 1994. QB Coltin Sullivan passed for 339 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 32 yards and another score. 5 different Panthers found the end zone Friday night. The visiting Lumberjacks were happy to see QB Ryan Peerboom back as he threw for 261 yards and a pair of scores, however it was not enough to get the road league win.

Washougal improves their record to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play with the win. The Panthers will travel to Crook County, Oregon (3-2) Friday at 7:00 p.m. R.A. Long falls to 1-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play with the loss. The Lumberjacks will travel to Woodland (2-3 1-0) Friday at Woodland Stadium, 7:00 p.m.

Great job, Panthers! A lot of this great effort can be attributed to this senior class and the hard work they have put in! These guys have put in some blood, sweat, and tears and it is a legacy that Gibson, Packer, and Fox left with them. Great work, guys, and keep it going!

  2. Jack Supporter on October 1st, 2011 6:38 pm

I wasn’t at the game, but it really seems like Washougal is for real! They have a shot at going 9-0 and winning the league title. This is definitely turning out to be a learning year for the Jacks, who are very young but talented. Next week going to Woodland will be another tough one. Woodland will be looking for revenge for Jack wins the past 2 years.

  3. Sir Loves Football on October 2nd, 2011 5:48 pm

I give credit to the new head coach, without a good coaching staff there is no direction. 5 and 0 is defiantly exciting heep up the good work everyone!!!!

  4. whsplayer on October 2nd, 2011 5:54 pm

Who ever panther fan is I would like to start off saying thanks as a senior and for attending our games! But on the other hang Gibson, packer, and fox were great coaches but Jacob has turned this program for us as well. He is the coach on the sidelines with his other great staff. The other coaches taught us a lot and will always be remembered but coach Jacobs and his staff is amazing and I wouldn’t ask for anything different.

Great job panthers – it was an awesome win. Definitely a team effort by all who played. You guys ROCK!! Gibson, Packer and Fox? What???

  6. Chainsaw on October 2nd, 2011 11:23 pm

I sure miss my days of playing panther football! Good to see Washougal slaughtering the GHSL with there 5-0 record! \m/

  7. wawadad on October 4th, 2011 12:22 pm

Game marred by RAL bad beheaviour and officials who looked the other way until a fight broke out. Understand the suspension of the Panther player as the no fighting rule needs zero tolerance but kind of hard to blame the kid when your teammate is lying on the ground getting stomped on well after the play is over and the official standing over just watches and lets it go. Film comfirms that RAL player involved had been pulling crap the whole game once he saw how it was going for his team,or maybe that is just acceptable Jack play as he wasn’t the only dirty player. 2 plays before he threw punches right in front of officials and nothing. I blame the officials more than the kids for letting it go until it boiled over

  8. wawadad on October 4th, 2011 12:27 pm

previous comment marred by my bad spelling and run on sentences. just a follow on though. The RAL behaviour continued into the JV game Monday night only this time an official stepped in to halt it. 2 Panther offensive linemen being pulled around by their facemasks after the play was over, the ref grabbed both the RAL offenders by the facemasks and marched them to their bench for the remainder of festivities. Oh yeah a roughing the passer on same play. Keep it classy Jacks.

  9. Jack Supporter on October 4th, 2011 2:19 pm

wawadad – Not to make excuses, but I think there is a lot of frustration going on right now at RAL. After a few years of success we seem to be at a rebuilding stage right now. “Playing dirty” is not a trademark for the Jacks, and they have been victims of dirty tactics from other teams several times over the past few years. Things happen out on the field that shouldn’t happen, and I’m sure the Panthers are not completely innocent in the whole thing either. The Panther players are probably enjoying their success, and for all anyone knows some of their players may have been “trash talking” some of our players. You can’t see trash talking on film. Regardless, no one should resort to fighting to make their point. Like I said, frustration poorly handled but let’s not kid ourselves, it could have been retaliation for some trash talking.

  10. GSHL Fan on October 4th, 2011 2:53 pm

RAL will be back. They are young – best players are sophs – while WHS’s best players are seniors. This is WHS’s one and only shot at a league title for a while. There isn’t much coming up through the ranks. No QB next year and losing a whole bunch of talent.

  11. wawadad on October 4th, 2011 3:40 pm

Jack Supporter – My point being that had officials in the varsity game taken control as they did in the JV game it may have been nipped in the bud. Whether or not trash talking occured(sticks and stones my friend) the attempts at extra curricular physical intimidation by a few RAL players was clearly seen. Where in any playbook does it say stomp your feet up and down on a player down on the ground. Watching your coach do his best Mike Stoops imitation leads me to believe it is a culture being cultivated. The JV game incidents also bolster that belief. I hope I am wrong and we see good clean battles in the years to come.

  12. wawadad on October 4th, 2011 3:53 pm

GSHL Fan – I know the JV and C(Frosh and some Soph) team games don’t mean as much but the Panthers have only lost one close C team game. There is a lot of underclassman talent out here. They have been getting quite a bit of varsity game experience this year as well because of good starts in most of the games. In those games for the most part they didn’t miss a beat from where the starters left off. I don’t think the Panthers are going to go away after this year.

  13. Jack Supporter on October 5th, 2011 6:39 am

wawadad – Not going to beat a dead horse on this one. Congratulations on your Panthers’ 5-0 start and we’ll see what happens next year when the Jacks are more seasoned and the game is at Memorial Stadium. I am a little insulted about your implication that Coach Bertram is cultivating a culture of dirty play, and I’m sure he didn’t encourage what happened on the field Friday night. My son played for him his last 2 years of high school with a trip to the state playoffs in 2009. I’ve never seen or heard of him encouraging dirty play. Aggressive YES, dirty NO.

  14. whs football on October 5th, 2011 9:13 am

Jack supporter…. stop trying to make excuses for the coach. Th behavior was horrible of the varsity players Friday night. There is no way you can just sit there and say the coach is not responsible for his players behavior. If you truly want to say that then you know nothing about football. Also I hate to break it to you but it is obvious that you lack true football knowledge because the coaching staff at ra long do not know what they are doing. Sure it looks pretty when they try to throw the ball downfield, but you have to do more then that. Line does not know how to block and WR do not know how to run routes. Ra long had an opportunity to adjust to whs defense all night but they never did. DC at whs sent the blitz EVERY play, there is no excuse for the long coaches not being able to burn whs for sending the blitz every play. Ra long has just as good if.not better athletes the whs, it is very sad when a bad coaching staff holds back good athletes. The QB and yordy should be enough for a good coach to up 40 points against whs defense.

  15. r on October 5th, 2011 9:53 am

hey now i was once a player for washougal and i do need to say to both washougal supporters that yes what the RAL players might have done was wrong and the coach and officials may be at fault, put dont pick a fight with an oppents fan who just COMPLIMENTED our team. this is a big year for washougal, finally gaining some respect and credit both across the league and now a little bit of the state. Thats the important thing at this point. Our boys deserve the respect that they’ve worked for! Go Panthers!

  16. r on October 5th, 2011 9:55 am

    but* opponent*

  17. Jack Supporter on October 5th, 2011 10:20 am

whsfootball – Nice hostile comeback!! I actually do know a lot about football, and I agree that RAL probably does have better athletes than WHS but WHS is more experienced and are clicking big time as a team. It’ll be interesting to see how they finish against Woodland, Hockinson and Mark Morris. What bothers me the most is that you’re pretty much saying that players are robots who go out on the field and carry out the orders of their coach to play dirty and beat people up. There are schools in the past who have operated this way, but they shall remain nameless. Frustration happens and what happened (from what I’ve heard) is unacceptable, but MOVE ON, YOU WON THE GAME!! Seriously, good luck to Washougal the rest of the way. The players have put in their time and have earned what they’re getting now, and I know they’re feeling good. Be careful about throwing around accusations about coaching staffs, that can get pretty sticky.

  18. Panther Parent on October 5th, 2011 10:28 am

    Well put R on…

Jack has been very good on these message boards and fair I must say. I dont beleive for a sec that the coach teaches that type of play and they were most gracious in victory last year.

Let’s act like we have been here before and support our boys!

    Go PANTHERS!!!

  19. whsplayer on October 5th, 2011 10:33 am

Ok I play for washougal as a senior and RAL has a lot of upcoming talent just Luke WHS does. But the arguing over parents has to stop! Yes washougal is finally changing things around and we hope to keep it up! But as for everything else, its done and over with! The RAL player who was ejected started pretty much all of it to be honest, but the officials did nothing to stop it! It was a horribly refed game! Good look to RAL and the rest of there season and panthers keep up the great work! 14

  20. whs football on October 5th, 2011 10:47 am

Sorry for sounding so aggressive. I had no intention to attack. I was just able to tell by your comments that you lacked some knowledge about football. And that is ok, ha football is to be enjoyed by all. You are right football players are not robots…so one outburst by a football player is bound to happen maybe two. But if it continues to happen over and over again then the coach is either harvesting it or doing nothing to stop it. I personally have has horrible experiences with ra long players when I played. I guess it is just sad that you as a parent had no idea that this was happening. Once again I am sorry for the tone, I have anger not towards you by more towards the players, coaches, and the program. The coaches do not know what they are doing and some how they still have a job. I guess people on the board that hire would no nothing about strategy and good coaching.

  21. Say What on October 5th, 2011 11:29 am

WHS Football – seriously? You guys struggled against Fort for 3 quarters! Are you joking? RA Long has much better coaches than you guys do. It just so happens that you guys have decent athletes that have more experience than RA Long. What’s Bertram’s history? Compare it to Jacobs’ history. C’mon now. Get real, dude. One good season does not make a program great. I can’t believe that WHS can be this arrogant. You guys have beaten 1!!!! half way decent team this year. Wins bs Bay, White Salmon, Clatskanie?!?, and Fort should not allow you to talk trash. Just pray to the good Lord that Columbia River does not move down to 2A next year. We will own you for the next half century or more.

  22. Jack Supporter on October 5th, 2011 11:44 am

whsfootball – read back over my comments and tell me what gives you the idea that I’m “lacking knowledge about football”. That’s twice you’ve said that now. In my comments I’ve never condoned what happened on the field, but I will defend the coaching staff. Honestly, now you’re starting to come off as arrogant and a know-it-all.

  23. whsplayer on October 5th, 2011 12:13 pm

Say what- don’t even say washougal is arrogant because of one person! You guys need to shut up and get over all yourselves!!! The brawl is over, stop crying about it! The coaching staff and players for both schools do not need to hear any disrespect to outside people!!!

  24. whsplayer on October 5th, 2011 12:19 pm

And for RAL having better coaches, you guys are complaint about young talent, washougal only had 3 seniors last year with a new coaching staff for the 2nd year in a year in a row and we finished the season with a winning record under Jacobs and his staff! Also the game we lost, we were tied at half or down by a couple points…

  25. Jack Supporter on October 5th, 2011 12:23 pm

whsfootball – Let’s stop the RAL coaching staff bashing. Obviously they do know what they’re doing. When Bertram took over, he took over a team that had been 0-9 and 1-8 the previous 2 seasons. Over the next 3 years, they went 5-5, 8-3 and our first ever trip to the state playoffs, and 7-3. That’s 20-11 in his first 3 years, not too bad!! He has one coach who had years of success coaching at Castle Rock and another coach who played college football at the University of Miami. A lot of our problems are simply from a lack of varsity experience, and next year will be different. Please stop questioning my football knowledge and bashing the RAL coaching staff. Again, can’t say it enough, good luck to the Panthers the rest of the year and I hope you represent the GSHL in the playoffs.

  26. Panther Parent on October 5th, 2011 12:26 pm

    Say What…

Let’s be honest who have you played??? (beat) CR stuggled to beat Hockinson! We would welcome them next year. The only way to get better is to play better teams. If they played right now my bet would be on WHS. Good luck with the regular season. We are not arogent, just gaining A little bit of confidence.

  27. Jack Supporter on October 5th, 2011 1:06 pm

Ok, now it seems like everyone is taking my response to “whs football” and generalizing it. I’ll make it clear right now – I THINK THAT “WHS FOOTBALL” IS COMING OFF ARROGANT INSULTING MY KNOWLEDGE OF FOOTBALL AND INSULTING THE RAL COACHING STAFF. I DON’T THINK THAT ALL OF WASHOUGAL IS ARROGANT. THEY HAVE NEVER GIVEN ME THAT IMPRESSION. TO “WHSPLAYER” – DID YOU ACTUALLY READ MY POSTS BEFORE YOU FLEW OFF THE HANDLE?? THE PERSON WHO USES THE ID “WHS FOOTBALL” TO POST IS ARROGANT, NOT THE WHS FOOTBALL PROGRAM!! I’M TRYING TO KEEP THIS CLASSY AND GIVE THE PANTHERS THEIR DUE CREDIT BUT I’M GETTING INSULTED WHEN I TRY TO DEFEND RAL FOOTBALL. FRUSTRATING! I’M NOT THE ONE THROWING AROUND INSULTS.

  28. wawadad on October 5th, 2011 1:07 pm

What a mess I started. The ultimate responsibility for the RAL players and the one in particular rest with the coach. Personally I would have walked out on the field and ended my boys season right then if he acted like that kid and the coach let it go, and yes he did let it go because he stayed in the game until ejected. That said aggresive coaching is great but you let an aggressive teenage boy go unchecked by both coaching staff and poor officiating you get what we had last Friday. If the coach couldn’t or wouldn’t handle it the officials should have.

  29. Say What? on October 5th, 2011 1:55 pm

Panther Parent – it’s spelled a-r-r-o-g-a-n-t. And you are a prime example of it. I wonder why the perception of that town, school, and sports programs are so negative? Oh, it’s people like you, wawadad, and WHS Football. As far as us playing this year? We would destroy you.

  30. 40 on October 5th, 2011 2:04 pm

no video for this game?? It’d be nice to see what all the fuss is about. Not trying to cause any trouble, but I thought Jack supporter was trying to handle himself with some class but wawadad just couldn’t let it end.

  31. John on October 5th, 2011 3:29 pm

Washougal has one big year and now they are it!!!! Try playing some decent teams next year like Camas and see were you stand. I love the fact that WHS is finally competing again but we shall see how they do the rest of the season and through the playoffs. Good luck Panthers!!!!!!!!!!

  32. Panther Parent on October 5th, 2011 3:30 pm

Have a nice day “Say What” and enjoy the rest of your season!

  33. Panther Parent on October 5th, 2011 3:38 pm

And BTW when typing on a Blackberry some words don’t always get typed correctly…I know how to spell, but thanks for the English lesson.

I learned in my debate class in college that when one has a week argument one tends to attack grammar or personal appearance….I look good….so I’m figuring that you had to go the grammar route. Have a great season.

  34. wawadad on October 5th, 2011 4:06 pm

Sorry for not letting it go, I will post this and be done. I understand Jacobs is appealing the panther players suspension for the next game. I think this is wrong and will tell him in person given the chance. Just as I critized the RAL coach for not sending the right message I think this appeal does as well. There should be zero tolerance for fighting. I don’t blame our kid for protecting his teammate but he and the rest of the team need to know actions good and bad have consequences good and bad. I will concede that RAL coaches don’t promote dirty play and maybe had an off night trying to control it. Good luck with the rest of your season.

  35. #1 panther fan on October 5th, 2011 4:11 pm

I have seen three games against RAL. I just have to say I have never seen any negativity from either side players or parents. This year I did see the fight and have heard from many players that it was started by one RAL player. I’m hopeful that if the ref seen it they would have called it.. they are not going to let some kid stomp/punch on another kid without throwing a flag. I seen this happen when my son played pop warner and there was a big fuss over it then and seems like things have not changed. The ref was accused then of not doing anything and parents were accusing coaches of telling the kid to do it. Do I think the officiating was horrible…yes, but It was ONE KID taking his frustrations out. Get over it he was finally ejected! I heard panthers are challenging the call about our player being ejected we will see what happens when they watch the video. RAL is a talented team and I think attacking their coaching staff for lack of utilizing players is wrong. We were in the same boat last year. Coach Jacobs is doing a great job and these boys are working their butts off everyday. A select few of them get up at 5am and go work out before school. These kids are dedicated!!!! Don’t blame coaches, refs etc.. Keep up the hard work boys both RAL and Panthers.

  36. Say What? on October 5th, 2011 6:59 pm

Panther Parent – get an iPhone, for goodness sakes. We will enjoy our season. Enjoy this one because it’s the last good one you’ll have for awhile. Next year, you might step up to some decent competition because you defeated your own “debate” about how playing good teams will only make you better. How was playing Columbia and Clatskanie making you better?

  37. HockHawks on October 5th, 2011 7:11 pm

Wawadad, I give you serious respect for not taking back, but clearing up what you said and saying it in a respectful manner. This is definitely a situation that gets people’s blood boiling. Washougal’s suspensions will not be appealed and RAL isn’t trying to appeal theirs. As a member of the hockinson football program I’ve gotten to know coach Bertram over the last few years and I know that he has absolutely NO TOLERANCE for any violence on the field or off the field in games or practice, there are a few hot heads on the Jacks and coach Bertram has told me that three players have received suspensions from him (the officials only suspended one). wshfootball… Their coaching staff doesn’t know what they’re doing? Bertram has been a head coach at three schools I believe and all were down in the cellar when he took over and all three went to the state playoffs in the first few years, including a state championship in one case. Their O-Coord. Tim Kalal is a division 1 national champ at The U (Miami) and has NFL experience. Art Walsh played college football and coached at the college and high school levels, and all the same goes for Joe Mawae who played at Oregon St. Bobby Brush is young and experienced in football, having played for the Portland state Vikings, and three NFL teams. Butch Allinger played football at Montana university and has been coaching for 20+ years. As a coach myself, it offends me that you would say they don’t know what they are doing, these guys have probably the most qualified coaching staff in southwest Washington at any level. And the WIAA has already looked at the game film, NO RALong player did any stomping or kicking or anything of the sort. I believe both teams were in the wrong, and yes, A FEW RAL players probably kept the fight going on and escalated it when it could’ve been a quick issue. However, the washougal fans showed absolutely NO CLASS by standing and cheering through the fight, encouraging the players. No good if you ask me.

  38. Panther Parent on October 5th, 2011 9:13 pm

    Hock,

Agreed with almost everything you said with the exception of the fan statement. I was at the game and no one, and I mean NO ONE cheered about the fight. The student body stands the entire game so let’s not mistake that for unsportsmanlike like conduct. The officials were to blame for letting it get out of hand and not getting it under control before it even started. Best of luck to your program the rest of the season, or at least until we meet…then may the best team win!

  39. titanfan on October 5th, 2011 9:55 pm

    who cares its 2A football…

  40. Whitey Tighty Titans on October 5th, 2011 10:32 pm

Are we really talking about fringe programs? Great to see that you’re on the “rise,” but people will care when you have some consistency and play real teams. Good luck to all the rest of the way.

  41. Jack Supporter on October 6th, 2011 6:16 am

Ok, now I think we can let the fighting issue die. People have brought facts to the table and it is clear that RAL coaches do not endorse or teach dirty tactics. There were issues Friday night and Monday night apparently, but I was at the C Squad game yesterday against Woodland and there were no incidents. I do know for a fact that Coach Bertram encourages his players to be leaders on the field as well as in the classroom and in the hallways but does not tolerate dirty play. A few players got over-zealous and it is what it is, and it’s been taken care of. Oh yeah, one more thing to “titanfan” – REALLY? Let’s see who has more exciting and competitive games down the stretch, lil’ old 2A football or the rest of the GSHL? I’ll go with 2A any day.

  42. titan fan on October 6th, 2011 11:02 am

I was just playing with the who cares its 2A, its good football, although i don’t think it will beat Mt.V vs River, Skyview vs Union…but there will be some good football in all leagues.

  43. 40 on October 6th, 2011 11:20 am

anybody know who is suspended for washougal?

  44. GSHL Football Fan 2011 on October 6th, 2011 2:16 pm

“anybody know who is suspended for washougal”?

In the big picture, does it really matter? It seems punishment was levied internally and with all the back & fourth it’s time to move on. That week and ship has sailed!

  45. Bryan Levesque on October 6th, 2011 2:35 pm

I think 40 wanted to know who for his pick in the Crook County game. If the players out are 3 of the 4 starting RB’s and the QB it may change his pick. but he’s a man, he’s 40. he made a pick blind. go talk to him

  46. 40 on October 6th, 2011 2:50 pm

the reasoning was for making my pick. I could care less personally, but like bryan said, if it is the starting backfield for washougal, I may make an adjustment. So, that being said….anyone know who it was? you dont even have to name em, just say ‘starting left tackle/D tackle’

  47. wawadad on October 6th, 2011 5:00 pm

You can see both players names in the Columbian article on the game

  48. WashougalFan on October 6th, 2011 6:36 pm

It was the starting TE and DE who was suspended. All others are good to go.

  49. whs football on October 7th, 2011 8:43 am

I hope crhs comes down to 2a so we can put a whipping on them. They barely beat hockinson! What makes Columbia river so good?

  50. RumblinStumblin on October 7th, 2011 9:08 am

whs football – their Jimmies and Joes are better than yours. PS – good luck with Hockinson.

  51. Storm from EWU on October 7th, 2011 10:30 am

@whs football, I think the reason CR is getting the credit they are is because of a few reasons.
They have handled the teams that are struggling.
They put up a couple scores on a great Camas team.

and #1 in my mind, they found a way to come out on top of the teams that are playing at their level.

I think that is going to be an important trait in that team, with Kawawaki and the Chieftains you have a team that is not going to stun and awe, but rather they are going to pound away at teams and gut out W’s. Which will often serve you well in the long run.

I see them finishing out 6-3 at worst 7-2 at best for the regular. And a win with a decent draw for week 10.

Whether they are better than WHS is hard to say. Clearly WHS is playing well and the big 5-0 shows that, but CR has only lost to Camas. WHS defense has shown a few holes, esp against a a few struggling teams like FV. I would look to the CR/FV game to be an indicator as well as WHS/Hock later on as to which team is better.

  52. Jack Supporter on October 7th, 2011 12:43 pm

Is C.R. moving down to 2A next year? Does anyone know about any re-classifications?

  53. Bryan Levesque on October 7th, 2011 12:49 pm

no one really knows. since there is not a magic number to hit as in the past, it all depends on the rest of the schools in the state. Say River is the 5th largest school in 2A, and they go down in numbers, they could still move up to 3A, if say 8 other schools that were in 3A before all went even lower than them. then the would become the 3rd smallest 3A school. It’s too hard to tell now. As for them choosing NOT to opt up again, I don’t know. For some reason that school and or school district still seems more concerned about kids on the C squad and weather or not they get to play, ranter than look out for the varsity kids in all sports and let them be in a position to be more successful. The 2A GSHL travel is not that much more than the 3A GSHL travel schedule. And i’m sure the could make the C Team “opt up” and play 3A and 4A schools C teams. Just my way of thinking. I don’t get looking out for little Johnny (or Sarah) as Sophomores, just to hinder them as Juiors and Seniors. Okay, off my mini soap box.

Got something to say?
