The Evergreen Plainsmen's new head football coach Charles Anthony was 42-15 in 5 seasons as the head coach at Cheyenne High School in North Las Vegas Nevada.

2009 is Evergreen’s turn.

Charles Anthony will be taking over as the head coach at Evergreen High School for the 2009 season. Anthony had a successful run as the head coach of Cheyenne High School in North Las Vegas Nevada, going 42-15 with four postseason appearances in just five seasons.

Anthony will be up for a visit to Vancouver next week to meet with Evergreen players and parents to discuss the new direction of the program and new expectations of athletes and coaches.

We caught up with Coach Anthony and asked him a few questions so everyone can get to know the new Plainsmen coach a little better.

You went to high school in North Las Vegas and then to UNLV. Have you ever lived outside of Nevada? If so, where?

C. Anthony – I have Lived in Baltimore, Tampa, and Canada.

You played DB at UNLV, did you consider going to any other school before you signed with the Rebels?

C. Anthony – Arizona, Iowa, Hawaii

What is your most memorable moment at UNLV?

C. Anthony – The relationship I had with my position caoch Bob Price, who currently coaches at the University of Virgina. He was instrumental in molding me as person.

I am a Defensive Coach,  but I will run the offense until one of my assistants learns the system.

Do you like the rain (because we get a lot of it)?

C. Anthony – No. I don’t think anyone does.

How did you hear about the opening at Evergreen?

C. Anthony – My Father In-law

What made you interested in the job at Evergreen?

C. Anthony – My wife is from Vancouver, and we always wanted to move back there to be around family.

What do you know about the program and its tradition?

C. Anthony – History of winning, and major family and school support.

You ran the double wing at Cheyenne (your former school), do you plan on running that style of offense at Evergreen?

C. Anthony – Yes.  We will also run a variations of the the Double Wing.

Some critics of the double wing say it is too difficult to make a late game comeback. What is your response to this perspective?

C. Anthony – That is were the variation of the Double Wing comes in.

Most head coaches at the high school level usually coordinate one side of the ball and have another coach run the other. Do you coach this way? If so, which is your strength?

C. Anthony – I am a Defensive Coach,  but I will run the offense until one of my assistants learns the system.

What style of defense do you plan on running? 3-4, 4-3, 5-2 or another style?

C. Anthony – We will determine our style of defense after the coaching staff evaluates defensive personnel.

As a coaching staff  we challenge our players all year long, and they always step up to the plate.

You went 42-15 in your 5 seasons at Cheyenne. Why do you think your program was so successful?

As a coaching staff  we challenge our players all year long, and they always step up to the plate.

What was your most memorable moment at Cheyenne?

C. Anthony – I would say my second and third year as Head Coach rather than a memorable moment.  We lost 90% of our freshmen team to a new high school, and three other schools were built in a four year span.  We rebuilt the program basically from scratch.  The players that remained, and the seniors of the “08″ team continued the winning tradition.

How would you describe your overall coaching philosophy?

C. Anthony – Be fair to the players, tell them that you love them, and push them to the limit.

What do you think your coaching strengths are?

C. Anthony – I have been able to put players in position to be successful.

What is your favorite part about coaching?

C. Anthony – The ability to have a positive influence on young men’s futures.
