As strange as it is, the playoff seeding was just announced today, 4+ weeks into the season.

There is good news. Both the 4A Greater St. Helens League and 3A Greater St. Helens League will get 3 teams in the round of 32 for the next 2 seasons.

In the 4A, the GSHL Champions will host the South Puget Sound League South #4 on the weekend of November 5/6 (all week 10 games will be either on Friday the 5th or Saturday the 6th). The runner-up will travel up to Seattle and face the KingCo #2.  The third place GSHL team will also hit the road, and take on the South Puget Sound League North #1.

In the 3A, the GSHL Champions will host the Metro #4. The runner-up will travel up north to face the Narrows #2. The third place GSHL team will play at the Metro #3.

It is odd that last season the 4A GSHL had 6 teams and only 2 teams made it to week 10, while they now have only 5 teams, but get a third team in. But hey, lets just be happy we got it.

You might be thinking, “Wow! That means the 4A GSHL could have a team with a losing record in the playoffs?” If so, don’t let the WIAA hear you think that. Remember that according to them, week 10 is NOT the playoffs, just a preliminary round to see who makes it to the “playoffs” the next week. So, there will be a playoff to see who makes the playoffs, but it is NOT a playoff game.

So, now you are thinking, “Wow! That means the 4A GSHL could have a team with a losing record in the post season?” Yep. Battle Ground (1-3) Heritage (0-4) Evergreen (0-4) are all still alive for the post season. Evergreen and Heritage will need to win out to avoid a losing regular season. If that happens it will not be the first time a 4A GSHL team has gone sub-500 and made the post season. In 2005 two GSHL teams (Skyview 3-6 3-3 in league and Battle Ground 2-7 2-5 in league) finished with losing records and represented the GSHL in week 10 as the 3rd and 4th seeds. It did not work out so well as Skyview lost at Gig Harbor 31-6 and Battle Ground lost at Edmonds-Woodway 28-0.

Unless something is changed next year the 4A GSHL #2 will host KingCo #2 and the 3A GSHL #2 will host the Narrows #2.

If the playoffs started today and we used non-league records instead of league records… Meaning it wont be this way, but it is fun to guess.

4A GSHL

Union (3-1) hosts Bethel or Puyallup (both 2-2)
Skyview (2-2) at Bothell or Skyline (both 3-1)
Battle Ground or Heritage or Evergreen at Auburn or Kentlaek or Kentridge (all 4-0)

4A bracket

3A GSHL

Camas (4-0) hosts Seattle Prep or Franklin (both 3-1)
Kelso (3-1) at Timberline (2-2)
Mountain View (3-1) at eattle Prep or Franklin (both 3-1)

Well this makes winning the 4A GSHL Championship that much more important. Bothell and Skyline are not teams you want to go in first against.

And I know it may not be that way by the end of the season but I can guarantee you that the KingCo #2 will either be Bothell or Issaquah but probably Bothell

That is some tough teams to be playin right out of the gate. too bad we couldnt get like a nathan hale or somethin like that this year

    How good is the metro?

Its not. Its who Columbia River played last year. they were apparent league champs or #2 and they had a record of like 5 and 4 or 6 and 3. not like a skyline or bothell who run the table or only lose 1 game and are legit state contenders every year

it seems like the number 2 spot in the 4A might get you a tougher game than the number 3 spot.

I agree, the 2 spot is the worst possible draw for the 4A for any of the 3 allocations!!

Does anyone know where to find an actual bracket to see what the possible first round and semifinal matchups will be? In the past I have found the bracket linked with the district allocations. Maybe the bracket is not finished yet.

I posted the 4A bracket above. I will get the 3A one soon and then post it as well
