GSHL Stars Shine At East/West All-Star Game
Written by on June 29, 2009
You could not have asked for a more perfect day to play a football game. The sun was out there was a slight breeze and there were a lot of very good football players on one field. The 2009 3A-4A East/West All-Star Football Game at Everett Memorial Stadium was a showcase of the best big school senior football players in the state of Washington. Southwest Washington was well represented and made a huge impact on the game.
The West scored first when TJ Lee (West Seattle) took a run to the right and out ran the East defense for a 4 yard TD. The extra point was, well let’s just say there were no pure kickers at the game, and it showed. In the second quarter East QB Blake Bledsoe (Central Valley) hit Clayton Homme (Southridge) in the corner of the end zone on a jump ball for a 13 yard TD. Homme made an acrobatic catch doing a full body flip in the air landing on his head as he made the catch. Homme came to the bench, sat down and said, “Ah, I landed on my dome.” Stan Langlow (Curtis) made the extra point, in what turned out to be the only converted extra point all game. Late in the second quarter the West was threatening to score when Columbia River DB Rob Caballero forced a fumble at the East 2, keeping the small lead going into the half.
The West regained the lead in the third as TE AJ Carroll (Meadowdale) hauled in a 25 yard pass from QB Nick Baker (Lake Stevens). The West went for 2, however, the pass play was broken up in the back field as Baker had heavy pressure from the East DL. As the clock wound down the East had one last drive down 5 with 3 minutes left in the game. On 4th and 11 from the East 31, Bledsoe hit Heritage WR Ashton Clark for 18 yards and a East first down. Bledsoe then ran a QB draw up the middle the remaining 13 yards for the go ahead score with under 2 minutes remaining in the game. The extra point attempt was blocked giving the East a 13-12 lead. The West had one last chance, however was unsuccessful. A second down pass out to the flats was almost picked, and would have been easily run back for a score. On third down WR Spencer Hannah (Ferndale) got laid out by Stan Longlow as Hannah attempted to go over the middle (see video below). The play could have resulted in a West first down at the East 37. However, it was 4th down and Evergreen DE Ashton Miller was one of two East DL that sacked Jacob Allie (Lindbergh) to seal the win for the East.
All 5 GSHL players had a big game for the East.
- Evergreen DE Ashton Miller (#56) had almost 10 tackles, a recovered fumble and 1.5 sacks.
- Heritage WR Ashton Clark (#23) had many grabs on the day including one on 4th down with under 2 minutes left in the game setting up the go ahead TD .
- Heritage LT Steven Forgette (#51) played the entire game on offense and was also a team captain.
- Columbia River DB Rob Caballero (#21) had a forced fumble inside the 5 yard line preventing the West from scoring.
- Camas WR Guy Varsek (#80) had 2 catches and downed 2 punts inside the 5 yard line.

Got something to say?

Bryan – thanks for doing all of this. This was a great snap-shot of the All-State game. I loved watching Ashton Miller end his high school career with such a great game. GSHL did very well all around. The interviews were a great touch!
Thank you Bryan for the great coverage that you gave our local kids in this game. Awesome videos and pictures.
Thanks
