Hawks Hold Off Monarchs Late Rally In 27-24 Win

Written by Bryan Levesque on October 24, 2008

The Hockinson Hawks had a 27-0 third quarter lead at home versus the Mark Morris Monarchs Friday night.

Following a Mark Morris blocked punt , Hawks RB Taylor Wolf ran in from 10 yards out to give Hockinson the early 7-0 lead. The Hawks added two more long touch down runs in the second quarter. Matt Williams 76 run, and Justin Green 51 run made for a 21-0 halftime score in favor of the home team.

In the third, Jordy Robertson connected with Green on a 22 yard pass pushing the Hawks lead to 27-0 and it appeared as though the game was over.

The Monarchs did not give us, and stormed back to score 3 TD and convert all three 2 point conversions to pull with in a filed goal. Mark Morris QB Scott Kirkpatrick connected with WR Travis Kinder from 6 yards out, then hit Matt Lomasney for the 2 to bring the score to 27-8. Late in the forth, the Monarchs were back on the scoreboard, this time Kirkpatrick connected with WR Cody Molner from 8 yards out. WR Jeremy Wolf hauled in the 2 pointer from Kirkpatrick and the score was 27-16. Late in the forth, Kirkpatrick again found an open Mark Morris WR in the end zone, again to Molner from 16 yards out.  Kirkpatrick could not find an open receiver on the 2 point attempt, so he ran it in himself to bring the score to 27-24.

Following the last Monarchs touch down, the Hawks were able run out the clock and end the rally and in the process clinch the 2A GSHL title.

With the win, Hockinson improves to 6-2 and 4-0 in league play, and the 2A GSHL title. The Hawks will wrap up the regular season at Washougal (0-8 0-4) Friday in Washougal.

The loss drops Mark Morris to 6-2 and 3-1 in league play. The Monarchs will wrap up their regular season versus R.A. Long (5-3 2-2) as the home team at Memorial Stadium in Longview.

NOTE: CODY MOLNER, not Greg, did catch two TD for Mark Morris. Thanks for the heads up. We are sorry for the error. Cody’s name has been corrected above.

Both leagues, GSHL and the Evergreen, pretty much know which teams will be in the district hunt. The Evergreen will be sending Tumwater, Black Hills, Centralia and WF West. The GSHL will be sending Hockinson, Mark Morris, Woodland and RA Long. Ridgefield could beat woodland and have a tie but I am pretty sure the tie breaking process would favor the Beavers.
