Kelso Holds Off Visiting Fort Vancouver 28-20

Written by Bryan Levesque on October 2, 2010

Kelso jumed out to a 28-0 lead at halftime then had to hold off the Trappers for the 28-20 home league win.

Kelso RB Slate Miller had a pair of rushing touchdowns in the first half to help the Hilanders to a 28-0 lead at the break. QB Makaio Mobbs had an 86 yard rushing touchdown to open the scoring in the first quarter.

Fort Vancouver had 234 yards of offense in the second half, including 158 passing from QB Richard Vansiclen as the Trappers scored 20 unanswered and had a chance to tie the game late. Fort had a 4th and 10 on Kelso’s 30 with 30 seconds left in the game and Vansiclen just missed WR Danny Hernandez on the pass in the end zone as the ball went off his fingertips.

With the win Kelso improves to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in league play. The Hilanders will travel to Evergreen (1-4 1-0) next Friday at McKenzie Stadium for a non-league game at 5;00 p.m. Fort Vancouver falls to 2-3 on the year with the loss and 0-2 in league play. The Trappers will host Mountain View (3-2 1-1) next Friday at Kiggins Bowl 7:00 p.m.

Absolutely horrible performance in the second half by the Hilanders…as a former player for Kelso (last season) this was inexcusable the way they let Fort stay in the game. QB made bad decisions and the D gave up way to many big plays and a couple Horrible and I mean HORRIBLE calls didnt help. But there are too many Question marks for this team still and they will need to be shored up quickly going into next weeks games

Fort came out in the second half ready to win the fight they started. We may not have one the game but we won the second half and showed heart. Are guys deserve alot of respect. The defense stepped up and started out hitting the hilanders to help put the game close. I expect the Trappers to pick it up next week where they left off this week, ready to out hit who ever they play against.

Have fun with Mountain View, Crawford.
They beat your starters last year in November 40-0, in a game that ended in the 3rd quarter due to lightning.
And after coming so close to Union, I get the feeling theyll come to town with a chip on their shoulder when they get back to league play.

Out Hit? more like Keep Up.

    Main,

You can’t compare last year. Many of those who played in that “JV” game against Mt. View aren’t starters for Fort this year. I think you will be very surprised by the results. Fort now has all the athletes out that haven’t played in the past and have some big time weapons they didn’t have last year, or even two weeks ago. Mt. View will be favored to win, but if Fort plays like they did against Kelso in the second half, Mt. View won’t do much on offense. Don’t underestimate the Trappers this year they are a different team from seasons past.

Mt. view will keep fort from scoring more than 10 points in there match up friday night. There Defense is strong, fast, and will come out hitting you can count on that. If they can put the #10 team in the state to test like that, fort will have no chance.

  6. MeanMachineBleacherCreature on October 4th, 2010 3:33 pm

Eh, union fan, not to be a stickler but Union is ranked 10th in the 4A, not the state. Bellevue did beat Union week 1.

“if Fort plays like they did against Kelso in the second half, Mt. View won’t do much on offense”.

Crawford & Main: Not to slight the Trapper’s because they are having an improved season thus far but your Friday night matchup with the Thunder will rightfully determine how much respect should be paid to Fort thus far, fair enough? Let’s look at your body of work so far through 5 games shall we:

    A week 1 loss to 1A Ridgefield
A week 2 win vs BG who has managed to beat Woodland in 2OT and Woodland is currently winless.
A week 3 win vs Washougal who currently has wins (10-7) against Bay, Columbia & Clatskanie.
A week 4 drubbing vs Prairie who gave up 48 to Camas by half
A week 5 loss to Kelso who managed a total of 54 yards against Union. Admittedly Kelso is better than that game indicated.

I would say the “Jury” is still out on Fort and you guys have looked much improved this season but with Mt. View, CR, Camas & Bay on the schedule in the coming weeks, things are looking really tough for the Trappers.

My point is, MV will do plenty on offense imo but I could be wrong.

    Good Luck!

Scotty4life way too represent your town. But as i’m told they will make it too the playoffs. Unlike (last season) but with upper classman as yourself last year it’s not surprising that you couldn’t make it into the playoffs. So that Performance will top yours any day in the long run

  9. MVHS Athlete on October 4th, 2010 9:56 pm

Horrible calls going against kelso up in longview? thats a shocker..

  10. Scotty4life on October 7th, 2010 12:58 am

It really is too bad Gshlfan77 that you weren’t in our locker room last season and didn’treally know the character of our Seniors or me. We gelled as a whole we stayed together no matter what. the chemistry was better than the previous three seasons that I had played. This years unit despise eachother. They play as individuals and plus last season we were in 4A and had to play a very good skyview team and a Heritage team that was carried by their sensational QB. This season there are 3 playoff spots available they are in 3A. I love my Scotties and I will cheer them on even though they may make some bonehead plays but I am a realist and I dont try to play my team up to something they arent. so before you go insulting my character and integrity and my fellow Seniors know who this is writing this. you obviously have no idea what you are talkin about

  11. Scotty4life on October 7th, 2010 1:07 am

plus it doesnt take a Genious to see how badly they played in the second half. I am not the only one who saw it. I love Kelso Football and take pride in being a Kelso Football Alumni. I know as well as everyone else the Kelso should have beaten the livin’ dog outta Fort. face the facts Gshlfan77 you know nothing about Kelso Football

  12. May Day the Hilander on October 8th, 2010 8:03 am

Scotty you’re totally right about Gshlfan77. He doesn’t know anything about Hilander football. He probably doesn’t know much about football in general and has probably never played a down. He’s got a lot of hutzpah(but not intelligence) to be claiming to know anything about your character or the 2009 team’s character. Might I add that a lot of guys will say stupid things on the net that they wouldn’t have the courage to say in person? You guys played your nearts out and hung right there with schools that were much bigger than you all season long and came within a whisker of making the playoffs. GO BIG BLUE!

  13. May Day the Hilander on October 8th, 2010 8:14 am

There is no other way to put it Union kicked Kelso’s rear in every facet of the game 2 weeks ago at McKenzie. I would like to comment though on the GSHL’s ridiculous scheduling of Hilander games at McKenzie stadiun this season. Kelso is in the middle of a streak where they have to play at that stadium 3 out of 4 weeks. I also don’t think that it is an accident that they are scheduled for the 5:00 game all 3 games. I think it’s a weak attempt at keeping more rabid Hilander fans from making the trek down to Vancouver than the home team will have at the game. Union supported their team in strong numbers. I’d be willing to bet that Kelso has as many if not more fans than Evergreen has at the game tonight.

  14. May Day the Hilander on October 8th, 2010 8:22 am

Fort fans, keep your LOSS to Kelso last Friday night in perspective. They LOST first of all. My second point is this, it was obvious who the best team was in the first half. The Hilanders let down and kind of fell asleep in the second half. Mark my words: Fort will get whacked by Mt. View tonight! League has started…no more weak victories over cupcakes. Fort will be lucky to end this season with more than 3 wins.

  15. Kelso on October 8th, 2010 8:37 am

Kelso fans. I’m a die-hard true blue Kelsonian. Let’s keep away from trash talking, please. It not only makes you look unintelligent, but also the school and city. Anyone can trash talk, so let’s keep the hard hitting on the field. If Kelso has to play 3 times out of 4 at 5:00p at McKenzie, so be it. We need to be prepared no matter what test. We can’t blame our losses on anything or anyone else. We don’t trash and belittle those whom we beat. Kelso has the tradition of letting the players on the field do the talking. Let’s keep it that way.

    We Are Kelso.

  16. Scotty Pride on October 8th, 2010 9:08 am

    Well said Kelso.

  17. GSHL Fotball Fan 2010 on October 8th, 2010 10:03 am

Kelso is 3-0 in league play …the way it looks is 3 wins in the 3A GSHL probably will get a team into state. Camas and Kelso seem to be the front runners with MV and CR looking to secure the 3rd spot.

  18. MVHS Athlete on October 8th, 2010 10:42 am

Remeber Kelso hasnt played MV or Camas yet so the MV kelso game will probly determine the 2nd and 3rd place teams and after last week I think MV will win

  19. Jaime on October 9th, 2010 12:00 pm

@ Trapper Fan. You say that all the athletes are playing and they are major weapons. Well I sure didn’t see it last night against Mt. View. I think if you are one of the kid that decided to come out and play football after the season started or has had such failing grades that you couldn’t play the first 5 games and you think you ate the weapon that fort has been lacking. You need to pull your head out your butt! The boys and girl. That put in time and hard work from june until now are the real athletes and weapons of this team. They might not be the best team but they were winning games without you all. Y’all née to take your MIP’s and beat it your not needed! And jump back on your own bandwagon and stop bringing the trappers down. GO FORT.

Got something to say?
