Mark Morris Takes 64th Civil War And 2A GSHL Championship With 22-11 Win Over R.A. Long

Written by Bryan Levesque on October 30, 2010

For the second year in a row, the Civil War was winner-take-all in the 2A GSHL.

For the second year in a row, Mark Morris took it from R.A. Long.

A wild first quarter saw Zach Tackwell of Mark Morris return a fumble 32 yards for touchdown. A Jeremy Wolf 1 yard touchdown run. As well as a 43 yard touchdown pass from Senior R.A. Long QB Austin Wegdahl to Freshman RB Jacob Yordy.

Mark Morris led 14-7 after 1 quarter and the barn burner was on, or was it?

Things settled down after that, and a scoreless 2nd quarter keep the score 14-7 at the half.

The Monarchs then drove 71 yards in over 6 minutes to start the 3rd quarter. Dan Feeney’s 1 yard touchdown run, along with a 2 point conversion, put Mark Morris up 22-7.

The Lumberjacks could only manage a pair of safeties the rest of the night and fell 22-11 to their cross-town rivals.

With the win Mark Morris improves to 6-3 on the season and 4-0 in league play. The Monarchs host #9 Chehalis (7-2) Friday for the preliminary round of the playoffs at Longview Memorial Stadium, 7 p.m. R.A. Long falls to 7-2 on the season with the loss and 3-1 in league play. The Lumberjacks will host #4 W.F. West (8-1) Saturday for the preliminary round of the playoffs at Longview Memorial Stadium, 1 p.m.

I find it interesting that Mark Morris took 2 safeties in the 2nd half instead of punting the ball to Jacob Yordy. RAL should have won this game. Take away the initial fumble return for a TD by MM, the 50 yard TD run by Shawn Brown called back on a holding penalty, and the two times RAL was inside the 10 and came away with nothing and it’s a different outcome. The playoffs should be interesting.

I’m not convinced that MM is a better team than RAL.

Jack supporter- What happened in the game happened in the game. If those things were changed then things surely would have changed for MM too. Quit complaining, We gave you guys safeties because thats smart football we werent avoiding Yordy, we were avoiding a blocked punt which could have resulted in a TD for RAL. Yordy was pretty quiet all night as well as the whole RAL offense. Two big plays and poor blocking on one of those big plays shows the lack of desire in this years RAL squad.

Rawdog 7575, I’m not complaining, just pointing out that MM is not a better team than RAL in my opinion. I think, to an extent, they were afraid of Yordy. I think our team does have desire, they just had some things not go their way. Don’t get me wrong, MM is a good team and they played a solid game, but they also got a bit lucky. Again, both teams are good, I just am not convinced that MM is superior to RAL. Good luck to both in the playoffs. If MM can’t stop Baldwin, it’ll be a long night for them. If RAL can’t stay focused and cut down on their mental mistakes and if Wegdahl can’t go, it could be a long night for them as well.

Umm….I didn’t see the game..but how can these RA long fans be saying that Mark Morris isn’t a better football team? They met head to head on neutral ground and Mark Morris doubled the score on them. The result seems to make the answer rather self-evident. That’s just an observation, now on to my main point. I think both of you teams got very unfortunate draws. That’s pretty messed up when you’re a first or second place team in your league and you have to play a top 10 opponent in the very first game. I think the 3-A teams got much better draws. Camas gets to open against a 5-4 team. Kelso even got a pretty good draw as the number three seed. They play Seattle prep who 7-2 and isn’t anywhere mentioned in the state rankings. I honestly wish both schools luck in the playoffs, hopefuly you can both overcome the unlucky draws.

where I see that the game was won for MM was in the trenches. MM controlled the line of scrimmage and out rushed Ral 194-20. Ral’s bigs were once again inneffective against MM on both lines of scrimmage. I think thats 4 years in a row. In recent years RAL has had the much bigger line and they still cant push MM around. Personally I thinka lot of it has to do with coaching. Even in a year when RAL supposedly has more pure talent they cant get it done. But MM’s quicker O lineman get it done. MM is a better team than RAL

okay MM ill give there line alot of credit in that game but the jacks were playing flat they had no desire after that first play RAL line is all around better next years civial war is gunna be fore the 2a title again and i think the jacks are gunna sneek in under the radar and steal it away goodluck next year jacks!!
