Mountain View 2009 Spring Practice Breakdown
June 20, 2009
As spring practice comes to a close, what are your initial thoughts about your team?
Coach Mathieson – I am proud of the players that participated in our winter and spring conditioning program. Their progress as football players and as young men was very evident. We are looking forward to continued growth in the summer and on a weekly basis as we progress through the season.
Who are 3-4 of your returning players from last year’s Varsity team?
Coach Mathieson – We have several players returning from last years team. I believe we bring back 7 players on defense that started at one point or another last season and 8 players on offense. While there are obviously no starting spots locked up at this point, we do feel good about our experience at certain positions, as 32 players return with Varsity experience.
What players were not on the Varsity last season who you expect to be impact players this season?
Coach Mathieson – We expect all players that were not with us last season to be able to provide either quality minutes or quality depth to our program.
About how many players are you expecting to turn out in the fall?
Coach Mathieson – We had 74 sophomores, juniors and seniors sign up during spring ball for next season. At our freshmen orientation, wherein incoming 9th graders registered for classes, we had 63 students indicate that they were going to play football as 9th graders. Thus, I expect 65 older kids and 50 9th graders. This would place us on track for our three year plan to re-establish our numbers at a level that I think is appropriate for a healthy program.
What are your goals as a team for the 2009 season?
Coach Mathieson – Our goals for the 2009 season are the same as always: We want to teach our kids how to prepare, compete and love one another. I look forward to 2029 in order to find out if we were successful or not. If our young men are great husbands and fathers and brothers and employees, and members of their community, etc. then we will know we achieved our goals.

Got something to say?

Coach Math is an amazing coach. He not only teaches players the game of football he also teaches the game of life. I am so greatful to have a coach like him. He has not only coached in high school but in college as well. I am sure hell find his way back to the college level as he is way to good to continue coaching high school ball. He’ll take an okay player and make him a great one. He knows exactly what it takes to make a player better. I learned so much from him he helped me so much in selecting a school in college and what school would fit my needs not only as a football player but also as a student as well.
