Written by Bryan Levesque on October 23, 2008

The Evergreen Plainsmen held on to defeat the Battle Ground Tigers 20-17 at home Thursday night in a 4A GSHL football match up.

Evergreen struck early when Krell Hudson caught a 7 yard pass from Marvin Thomas less than two minutes into the game. Battle Ground answered later in the quarter as Komivi Akengue ran in the score from four yards out to tie the game at 7-7. Evergreen RB Wilford Venable ran in the next score from eight yards out to give the Plainsmen the 14-7 lead. The Tigers tied the score in the second quarter on a forth and goal from the one as John Simon took the direct snap, faked the dive, pulled up and hit a wide open Zac Hearron for the score. The half ended in a 14-14 tie.

In the third quarter Evergreen DB Trevor Carnahan intercepted Hunter Vanderpoll’s pass to set up the Plainsmen’s next scoring drive. Four plays later Thomas dumped a swing pass off to James Monk who darted through the Tigers defense for the 15 yard TD. Battle Ground blocked the extra point to leave the score at 20-14 Plainsmen. Tigers kicker Riku Wanzek added a 27 yard FG in the forth to bring the score to 20-17.

With the win, Evergreen improves to 5-3 and 3-1 in league play. Evergreen closes the regular season at home versus Mountain View (4-3 2-1) 5pm Friday night at McKenzie Stadium. The Tigers fall to 1-6 and 0-4 in league, and will close out their season at home versus the Kelso Highlanders (3-4 0-3).
