Union Blows Out Feisty Evergreen 48-0

Written by Bryan Levesque on October 23, 2010

Evergreen played about as well as anyone could have asked them, yet it was still not enough as Union rolled to a 48-0 league win Friday.

The Plainsmen took the opening drive 60 yards in 9 plays down to the Titans 10 only to miss a field goal.

Union RB Zak Browning then took the Titans first play from scrimmage and ran 80 yards a touchdown. Later in the quarter, Browning took a screen pass from QB Kaben Hunphrey-Butler 45 yards for his second touchdown of the night capping off a 9 play 90 yard drive.

In the second quarter Treve Ensley returned a punt to the Plainsmen 5, and 1 play later Browing had his second rushing touchdown of the night and a 21-0 Union lead.

Zak Browning ended the night with 169 yards rushing on 18 carries and the 2 rushing touchdowns. Browning now has 1061 rushing yards on the season and 17 rushing touchdowns.

Hunphrey-Butler had a 1 yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter and a 23 yard touchdown pass to Ray Burney in the 3rd quarter.

In the 4th quarter, RB Ryan Stanford scored a 41 yard rushing touchdown, the Titans 3rd 1 play drive of the night.

Union’s defense again did not allow a touchdown, let alone any points. The Titans defense has now gone 11+ quarters w/o allowing a touchdown.

With the win Union improves to 7-1 on the season and 3-0 in league play. The Titans will host Skyview (6-2 3-0) Friday at McKenzie Stadium 8:00 p.m. Evergreen falls to 1-7 on the season with the loss and 1-2 in league play. The Plainsmen will play Heritage (2-6 1-2), as the road team Friday at McKenzie Stadium 5:00 p.m.

Always a pleasure to watch the best team in the GSHL take care of business. Very surgical and disciplined football.

skyview was better than union and will beat them

    thats pretty dang impressive.

On another subject, I’m sitting here watching Navy v Note Dame and cant help but think Browning would be an ideal fit as a FB in Navys offense. Someone who knows the boy should put it in his ear that going to play in annapolis is the way to go.

  5. SHEPARD on October 23rd, 2010 12:16 pm

Best part of the night was the Evergeen kids that didnt shake sum of our hands. You lost face it. Some of those dudes will transfer here and they better be prapared to work.

  6. Unionfather on October 23rd, 2010 1:39 pm

One point of clarification. Of the 58 Union has given up, 14 vs Heritage were not given up by the defense. Subtract those 14 and their defense has only given up 44. Twenty of those were against Bellevue (which is their lowest point total of the season). That all adds up to a very dominant D.

  7. Evergreenfan/Unionfan on October 23rd, 2010 2:30 pm

Union’s defense hasn’t given up a touchdown in 5 1/2 games. Think about that.

  8. time4achange!! on October 23rd, 2010 2:32 pm

Did Evergreen Officals read Shepard’s comments on kids leaving for Union next yr. Players from other teams know it, parents know it and so does the media. Do you see my name, think about it. Sounds like you might have 10 players return next yr. EHS needs coaches that will teach football and not frisbee !!! The kids are not tough, there’s no speed to the ball, no tough tackleing and it seems the offense only wants to go as far as their practice field, about 50 yds !!! Last nights game was a disgrace to Evergreen footbal. If I was playing against kids that left us in the earlier days for Union, I would be playing will one hell of a grudge !!! When Evergreen gets in the red zone, the offensive play calling gets bad. Wow !! Ugly foorball at best !!
K-nute don’t let misleading stats get your hopes up hi. Clark County football is way down. Those other schools are in good leagues every yr. Union will not last long in playoffs. Would love to see our local teams do well in the playoffs, but they will need all the good bounces.

  9. GSHL Football Fan 2010 on October 23rd, 2010 2:37 pm

You may see kids go to Mt View as well, that’s what happens when teams start to win.

  10. Evergreenfan/Unionfan on October 23rd, 2010 3:11 pm

Yeah, Union won’t last long in the playoffs. They never seem to……

  11. Ubeliever on October 23rd, 2010 3:32 pm

Ha,ha,ha,ha,ha. I just love to see all the whiner posts when Union wins every Friday night. So many wannabees out there. Look at their program and what they do well and try the things they do starting with damn hard work and dedication. On to the playoffs but bring on SHS as a warm up first. Roll on U and rock the GSHL once again. Bring on the rain shower! There’s no storm in our area.

  12. K-nute on October 23rd, 2010 4:24 pm

To add on to Unionfather’s point of clarification…Westview scored a special teams TD as well. In fact, they were the last time to reach paydirt on the U and that was on a short field and was WAY back in week 3! Also, time4achange – the competition will definately increase from here on out. But, to suggest that the U can’t compete with those other schools in these so-called better leagues, is wishful thinking on yours and many other people’s part.

Other leagues have their good teams and their not-so-good teams, just like we do down here. Everything balances out with the possible exception of Kingco Crest division. The GSHL stacks up as well, if not better than other leagues. Union deserves to be considered among the elite in the state. If you doubt that, than prepare to be surprised.

  13. someone on October 23rd, 2010 4:52 pm

if you watched the highlights evergreen looked liked they scored at least 1 td in the beginning but bad reffing called it back

  14. Egreens42 on October 23rd, 2010 5:36 pm

Go Green! whos the only team to win a state title in clark county! EVERGREEN!
unions the wannabees the cant win a title with 3 great classes behide team. what makes you think they will now? sure my teams not doing so hot! but dont diss on my coach! you dont play for evergreen or u did and quit because you cant held really hard work everyday! and parents shut up! if ur kid doesnt play and are teams not doing good tell them to man up

    well said…….

  16. Egreens42 on October 23rd, 2010 5:54 pm

oh for all those kids that leave! one word THEY HAVE NO HEART! i beleive in this team tell the end! im a plainsmen! A really plainsmen win or lose comes back to play! throw every tear and blood bleed! im a plainsmen! sure i think the coachs dont know how to but the right personall! takeing starters out! putting younger players and worst players end is dumb! but i know were going to play hard every day! and ill be back next year with a fire in my eyes those teams that beat us this year! knowing that for once ill take leadership as a senior unlike…this year! i put upon me to take leadership. i do my best leading are jv team there the future. and i know the other juniors are going to do the same all 5 of us. because these senior strong team didnt.

  17. Egreens42 on October 23rd, 2010 5:55 pm

  19. SHEPARD on October 23rd, 2010 6:17 pm

I dont think any team in the GSHL will be worried about the 5 seniors for Evergreen next year. Jump ship and beon this bandwagin at the U. Two of my buds will be over by basketball, and maybe another 2 more by track. The U only gets better.

  20. Scotty4life on October 23rd, 2010 6:27 pm

WAY TO RECRUIT!!!!! at leat up here in the kelso/longview area we dont break rules!!! I can’t wait till you get caught and you get WIAA sanctions against the so called U. all I can say is U always break rules.

  21. Hydro on October 23rd, 2010 6:40 pm

I am dissappointed that today’s youth can’t even spell and communicate. Good luck in this new economy getting a job. Heck, my taxes will pay for you to not work ….so party on little dude!

  22. victory on October 23rd, 2010 6:57 pm

Some info for all of you that keep talking about xfers to Union………………….. Heritage High School and Union High School are officially closed to both in-district and out-of-district boundary exceptions for the 2010-2011 school year as of March 5, 2010. Per administrative procedures 3131P and 3141P, children of employees who qualify for boundary exceptions according to RCW28A.225.270 and RCW28A.225.225 will be granted permission to attend Heritage High School or Union High School for the 2010-2011 school year. All other initial requests for both in-district and out-of-district boundary exceptions have been and will continue to be denied until further notice.
You better start packing for your move, or get jobs at Union.

  23. yeahboy on October 23rd, 2010 7:07 pm

victory… that says for the school year of 2010/2011, do you know if thats the same about next school year?? I hope so

  24. e on October 23rd, 2010 7:31 pm

wow alex aka number 42 i see that you intend to insult players? but didnt you leave to go to play at camas? then only played jv there and you founding out you wouldnt start there you came back to evergreen, because you know evergreen doesnt have as much talent, and hope to come and start at evergreen. it didnt work out obviously… so dont judge others because you sound, actually are the biggest hypocrite. please look it up, it will help you with the understanding of exactly how, and who you are.

As for victory you seem a little scared? you must be a camas fan, or a union parent hoping that your son can one day start at union.

P.S for victory- dont waste your whole weekends looking for rules, it should not be your life goal to just prove people numbers, that in the end does not mean anything.

  25. victory on October 23rd, 2010 7:52 pm

yeahboy…”will continue to be denied until further notice”. Next school year will be decided this Spring.
little e…. wrong on all accounts. Oh! By the way, what does “just prove people numbers” mean?

  26. Egreens42 on October 23rd, 2010 8:32 pm

hydro! this isnt a spelling bee site or for u to talk about taxes!

  27. twolfan2 on October 23rd, 2010 9:01 pm

Egreen42/Alex- I think I know why your grades are not good. Its called spelling, this group of words I am puting in a line is called a sentence. You puts lots of sentences together to make paragraphes. If you learn this it will help your grades- as for you selling out your teamates- no wonder Egreen is struggling- trust me they are much better off without you.

  28. wsumj on October 23rd, 2010 10:52 pm

    Anyway… About football.
I thought that Evergreen had that touchdown on that opening drive. Did that ball really hit the turf in the end zone?

  29. lacentermom on October 23rd, 2010 11:17 pm

Big storm coming from the west on Friday. Storms at home all November. Friday 38-34 Skyview. First time on astroturf all season… where are those old shoes?????

  30. e on October 24th, 2010 10:32 am

wsumj it looked like it was going to hit the ground, and the wr did a good job to make us all think he got his arms underneath it. Besides i know the wr, and he is very good, and knows how to fool you. If he truly did catch it, the ref was right there litterally like 5 ft away and seen it was not a catch, so the ref made the best call that he seen. As for the backwards pass, it was really close, and i looked at it many many times, and to me it was very close, but was a forwards pass…. so they made a good call for high school ball, and not getting to review it.

  31. EHS Pride on October 24th, 2010 6:41 pm

To all the people bashing Evergreen-

Everyone has a down year, even Union will have one in the future. Don’t say the kids don’t have heart, all of us want to win but maybe some other teams are just more talented.
And to everyone hateing because we played frisbee at practice-We were having some fun, and trying to lighten up the mood. This season has been difficult for all of the players, but we’re still playing as hard as we can. The chips just aren’t falling our way. We’ll be back next year.

  32. EHS Pride on October 24th, 2010 6:44 pm

    Oh yeah, one more thing-

Don’t bash on the coaches either, they prepare us as good as possible.

  33. someone on October 24th, 2010 8:08 pm

im pretty sure anyone can transfer to union they just have to have a good excuse like a student at evergreen last year switched to union this and now currently starts at union (im not going to pull names out).

  34. titan fan on October 24th, 2010 8:19 pm

EHS you’re right..we will have a down year and who knows when that will happen, but it will happen. When it does I think everyone and their Grandma’s will be happy. As far as the transfers go, everyone needs to give that a rest. Every school gets them and it has to be approved by the district…in other words its a legal boundry exception or they have moved into whatever school it is address. To attend Union and Heritage right now, you must have an address because the boundries are closed and have been closed since the end of the last school year.

  35. victory on October 24th, 2010 8:43 pm

Union does not have one player playing football that ever attended Evergreen High school. “someone” you are very confused!

  36. someone on October 24th, 2010 8:45 pm

yea there is his name is dj anderson #53

  37. K-nute on October 24th, 2010 9:48 pm

Evergreen played bravely and they have my complete respect. Anyone attending the game would have no idea that there is all this turmoil over there. The players played hard & with heart. Looks like a program that is looking to improve & has a plan. Coach is getting a bad rap on here, but I suspect the reality is more likely that he has a message and to expect results in year 2 is not realistic. In my opinion, the underclassmen at Evergreen should see this through, it may be the best thing they ever did.

  38. twolfan2 on October 25th, 2010 5:56 am

    titan fan-
“Every school gets them and it has to be approved by the DISTRICT…in other words its a legal boundry exception or they have moved into whatever school it is address”.

What if the district want’s Union to get all the kids? Look at how the boundaries are cut. Kids who live 1/2 mile from HHS and Egreen getting bused all the way out to Union. The line is like the divider between the haves and have nots in east Vancouver. They knew exactly what they were doing. The transfer flood has slowed a little, but you can’t change the boundary. It will be a long time before the Union does not have a good class.

  39. Football00 on October 25th, 2010 6:33 am

Union’s QB uses a bogus address – HIS GRANDPARENTS! And yes he doesnt live there! Should I go on?

  40. Union Dad on October 25th, 2010 6:43 am

I agree, I was expecting (from the post here) that egreen was done for the year, those boy’s came out played well and until their quarterback was hurt, stayed away from that “pile them up and hope something good happens” offense.
Good job Evergreen, keep working hard and things will turn around.
Should be a good game Friday, looking forward to playing Skyview.

  41. DCGardner on October 25th, 2010 7:00 am

Want some tinfoil for a new hat twolfan?

  42. Interestrante on October 25th, 2010 7:47 am

Listen folks, kids are gone out of Evergreen by December. Once our season wraps up friday the transfers will start. The last booster meeting things became very obvious that no change is in sight.

  43. titan fan on October 25th, 2010 12:27 pm

Yeah football00 go on please..would love to hear more of your bs.
Twolfan thats pretty stupid thing to say…oh wait..im sure in the meetings before union was built they said lets make this a powerhouse and draw up the boundries so its unfair to all the other schools…why would they screw over 3 schools to make one the best…didnt happen. Plus if you think Union is better because we cut into heritage kids..you can have those 20 students back..some are ok, but the trouble makers aren’t worth the effort.

  44. Your Mom on October 25th, 2010 1:34 pm

twolfan- I’m having a hard time thinking of all those Mt. View kids that live in neighborhoods along the Columbia as “have nots”.
What benefit would it be for the district to WANT one school to be better than all the others? None. The boundaries were set up to stabilize population between the schools, and to maintain a similar level of average family incomes at each. If all those kids that live a mile from Heritage went there instead of Union, you’d be complaining about how your school is overcrowded and Union isn’t.
Oh and that Heritage QB…. pretty sure he lives in another school’s boundary. Union’s, isn’t it?

  45. Evergreenfan/Unionfan on October 25th, 2010 1:50 pm

Union fans, including myself, need to be awful careful in their bragging/boasting before the Skyview game.

Union’s offense has often looked awfully sloppy in its execution. The option game is a disaster and needs to be thrown out or fixed fast. There are way too many turnovers and mistakes happening on that side of the ball.

Union’s defense has been great, but if Union is turning the ball over on offense, they could have a [heck] of a time playing catchup with a run-first offense. Now, if Union keeps it simple and is able to just pound away with Browning, that may be all the need. But that is a huge “IF.” SKyview seems to really toughen up on the defense, even if they start out slow. Union hasn’t faced an offense as dynamic and explosive as SKyview’s. They gave up 20 to bellevue, although that was the first game of the season.

  46. Evergreenfan/Unionfan on October 25th, 2010 1:56 pm

Funny I say giving up 20 to Belleveue, as if that is a lot of points. And that was the first game of the season, and again, against Bellevue. Union does have an awfully good defense. But Skyview can hurt you in more ways than Bellevue can. Skyview has better receivers (obviously) and I think a better all around QB.

  47. Action on October 25th, 2010 3:13 pm

Your Mom. Pretty sure you are wrong… regarding QB’s residence. Don’t spread crap unless you would like to prove it… Don’t look to close to U actual addresses and residences. Don’t through stones in your glass house. Even if he was,you have 2 desent qb’s, do you need 3.

  48. Storm from EWU on October 25th, 2010 4:24 pm

His point was not that he thought union needed another QB. he was simply pointing out that Union was not the only school with boundary exception players.

  49. DCGardner on October 25th, 2010 4:36 pm

I am confident in the Union secondary to get the job done. And besides from what I hear its going to be rainy that night. That might cause some trouble for Skyview.

  50. the E dude on October 25th, 2010 5:22 pm

Actually the wide receiver did catch that pass in the end zone I saw it , the other reff
saw it and he was about to rule it a td but you know how things go in high school football … too bad but nice job number 10!

  51. Storm Swarm on October 25th, 2010 6:58 pm

Why does the self professed “U” think they can come to skyview’s league and just take it. friday two teams will battle it out on the gridiron. And Union good luck trying to cover skyviews wide recievers and stop parker henry. It will be a great game and cant wait to watch it.

    The E,
Really? It was a nice sell, but the ball skipped a good yard in front of him, I

E, don’t need to fabricate things your boy’s played well, they are finally playing well, just build on that.
Storm swarm, YOUR LEAGUE, the GSHL has belonged to The U for the last two years, it is their time, hope your boy’s are at their best Friday and we start some new tradition a Union, Skyview fight, last night of the season to determine the championship. Can’t wait should be a good one, if both teams show up!

    Storm from EWU-

Pretty sure everyone picked up on the fact that TWolf fan was merely stating that kids who live less than 2 miles from HHS are required to go to Union because of the current boundary which is obviously strange. Oh and that Union WR…. pretty sure he lives in another school’s boundary. Evergreen’s, isn’t it? Always looking for an excuse to cover up your own issues I see… Send those “20″ students you seem not to care for back, you don’t deserve them.

  59. Storm Swarm on October 25th, 2010 8:25 pm

  60. Goddess 2 The Game on October 25th, 2010 8:39 pm

@ “Someone” I just like to point out that NO! he doesn’t live in Evergreens district. He did at one time and stayed with Evergreen on a boundary exception but lived in Union District. Ask me how I know? I sit on the 50 yard every friday and watch this kid play hard No matter what team he plays for his heart and mind are in the game not on who cares what you think..I know it upsets you to loose a good player but Evergreen Wll have a strong young team next year too. SKYWHO?

  61. DCGardner on October 25th, 2010 9:14 pm

Big boy titles? The last two years the big boys have been beat down by Union. You were just lucky enough not to be in their classification.

I don’t post much but when I read this reply I cracked up. What the heck makes a “rich kid” more athletic than a “non rich” kid? I’m sure all those great players from the inner cities will agree with THAT statement. It’s all about hard work and dedication no matter what your income level is. Get a grip on reality!

  68. Dahthunder on October 25th, 2010 11:31 pm

Union’s QB uses a bogus address – HIS GRANDPARENTS! And yes he doesnt live there! Should I go on?
Football00 just stay off the site if you’re going to post lies. Your double zero evidently is your IQ score. Should I go on? I live in the Mt. View neighborhood where the Union QB resides with his parents. Should I go on? Of course he doesn’t use his grandparent’s address because both sets live in Oregon. Should I go on? We are sad he did not go to Mt. View but understand he got a transfer approved and processed by the Superindentent himself. Should I go on? We love Thunder and always will, but at the same time we are happy to support the efforts of the Union QB because he’s a quality guy. You see, we can support our Thunder kids and others, because to hate and be bitter to any individual because of the school they go to is frankly just stupid.
You ask if “You should go on?” Please don’t !!

Union v Skyview 2008 was a beat down. Union v Skyview 2009 was not, 14-9 with no score until late in the 3rd if I remember correctly. Fun game to watch.

Stormswarm you should be more careful. Evergreen has beat Skyview 7 of the last 9 times they played. Some of the Evergreen wins over Skyview (41 to 17, 54 to 19, 38 to 7, 35 to 15). Funny how you think the storm won league in 2007. Evergreen won it that year. It took the storm 9 years as a school to even reach the playoffs. Not what I would call a football school.

Parents ,fans ,coaches ,and kids listen guys there are always gonna be cheaters and there is nothing that can be done about it . the kids that play sports are taught by there pathetic parents to run where the grass is green and play there , coaches recruit, and teams that are built that way are never gonna be champions . my kid is on a boudary exception from mt view to evergreen . not because of coaches ,teams ,records but because he grew up with those kids and went to cascade next door …. a true kid who fights for the team he is on and trusts in his head coach. not the chumps who just wanna b on premade teams . I would rather have the true kids anyday than your season record and no title .. stay true evergreen kids that head coach knows what to do to win right and dedicate the weight room this offseason you will be fine … love all the haters by the way #7 is fine he will be leading the team this week to . and he will graduste in two more years with the same head coach in wrestling and football . nice win union kids and good luck this week should be a fight with skyview also heritage and evergreen good one ……………
