Union Rolls Into Quarterfinals With 34-14 Win Over Timberline

Written by Bryan Levesque on November 15, 2008

Jr. RB Blake Russell scored three TD in Union's 34-14 win over Timberline.

The Union Titans advance to the state Quarterfinals with a dominating 34-14 home win over the Timberline Blazers.

Union improves to 11-0 on the season and will host #2 Ferndale (11-0) next weekend at McKenzie Stadium.

A very fast first quarter ended with no scoring but was not uneventful. The Titans had to scoring opportunities only to have both end in kicking miscues. The Titans had first and goal and missed a field goal on forth down, then following a partially  blocked punt set up a short field Union set up for another try for 3. Timberline Jr. #17 John Ferreira blocked the kick to keep the score at 0-0.

The clock continued to melt away in the second quarter as both teams keep it on the ground. Timberline appeared to pin the Titans deep when the Blazers had a 4th and 24 from their own 38. Union Sr. #9 Tyler Code bobbled the punt and recovered the ball at the Titans 7. However a block in the back penalty on Timberline during the kick forced the Blazers to kick again. And Union took advantage. This time Code fielded the punt cleanly at his 45 and ran the kick back to the Timberline 17 yard line. With the net 76 yards on the play, Union was ready to strike. Two plays later, Jr. running back #38 Blake Russell ran in from 11 yards out to give the Titans the 7-0 lead with 4:11 remaining in the half.

Union’s defense held the Blazers to 1 first down on  the next possession and forced a punt. Taking over at their 35 yard line with 2:09 left in the half Union marched 75 yards in 6 plays capped off by 2 yard pass from Junior quarterback #7 Brandon Weller to Junior wide reciever #18 Mitch Saylor. Weller connected with Code on a 39 yard pass and Weller converted on a third and 3 with a 13 yard scramble down to the 7 yard line on the drive. The Titans failed to convert the extra point leaving the score 13-0 Union going into the half.

In the third quarter, Code intercepted Timberline sophomore quarterback #14 Kevin Russell giving the Titans the ball at the Blazer 18. Two plays later and Russell ran in from 15 yards out to extend the Titans lead to 20-0.

Union next stopped a Blazers fourth down attempt to take over on their own 43. On the next play Weller hooked up with a wide open Code for a 51 yard pass setting up first and goal at the 6. Two plays later it was Russell yet again, this time from 3 yards out and the Titans had quickly built a 27-0 lead.

Timberline sophomore #19 Josh Brenneman picked off Weller on the first play of the fourth quarter setting up the Blazers first score. Russell connected with junior wide reciever #12 Delas Raiford from 19 yards out to cut the lead to 27-7 with 5:38 remaining in the game. Timberline’s Brandon Meyer recovered the onside kick following the Blazers score. However the Blazers again failed to convert a fourth down and turned the ball back over the Union.

Union junior running back Nathaniel Penaranda capped off a 5 play 69 yard drive with a 32 yard run extending the Titan lead to 34-7.

Russell found sophomore #88 Dale Garcia in the corner of the end zone for a 21 yard Blazer touchdown pass to close the scoring.
