Union Rolls Kelso At Home 36-0

Written by Bryan Levesque on September 25, 2010

Union had little trouble with the previously undefeated Kelso Hilanders, as the Titans won 36-0 at home Friday night.

Zak Browning scored 4 rushing touch downs for the second game in a row. Browning had 170 yards rushing as well on the night. Brandon Brody-Heim also had a rushing TD in the win.

The Titans held Kelso to 24 yards of total offense in the game, -3 in the second half.

With the win Union improves to 3-1 on the season and will play Mountain View (3-1 1-0) at McKenzie Stadium (as the road team) next Friday at 8:00 p.m. Kelso falls to 3-1 on the season with the loss and will host Fort Vancouver (2-2 1-1) Friday at Schroeder Field in a league game.

Nice to see the best team in the GSHL take care of the undefeated hilanders the way they did.

  2. Union Supporter on September 25th, 2010 7:36 am

Admit it 55+, you are just trying to bait those Camas folks into an argument aren’t you? Though it makes you wonder why they aren’t playing this year. Great rivalry. I would have to guess it was Camas who didn’t want to play. Still hurting from last year I guess.

  3. Union Supporter on September 25th, 2010 7:39 am

Looks like Browning earned another Player of the Week award this week. 455 yards in two weeks. It will be interesting to see how they justify giving it to Grindy.

  4. MVHS Athlete on September 25th, 2010 8:22 am

Grindy played in a bigger game

  5. CHSbleachercreature on September 25th, 2010 8:30 am

Hahahaha the irony in your comment union supporter…. Because saying camas didnt want to play was bait at its finest… We all know both coaches wanted to go to seattle to get exposure. And these offers dont happen every year… Nice try though. The union skyview game will be great.

  6. MeanMachineBleacherCreature on September 25th, 2010 8:41 am

I dont know how many times i have to say it, but Unions Athletic Director wrote the schedule. Plus the Seattle game. I agree, nice try though. As far as the Skyview/Union game goes, Go Skyview!

  7. Union Supporter on September 25th, 2010 8:42 am

It was baiting. I have no idea why they didn’t play. If Union could play Enemclaw, Bellevue and then go play in Beaverton, I would have thought a Camas game would have been possible. I wouldn’t discount school officials not wanting it to happen though. When the two schools get together, tensions run pretty high. Like a bomb waiting to go off.

And I would still give the nod to Browning. 170 on the ground is harder than 170 in the air. They won’t give it to him though and it is hard to fault Grindy if he does get it. He did have a good game against a better opponent.

  8. Union Supporter on September 25th, 2010 8:44 am

MeanMachine, I don’t understand, Union’s AD wrote Camas’s schedule? How does that work.

  9. titan fan on September 25th, 2010 8:46 am

Can both teams stop the stupid comments…no team avoided each other, both schools felt it was a rivalry that was getting too heated..no i dont agree with that , but its the truth…both schools have excellent football teams and we will never know for sure who would win had they played…never. give it a rest, support all the kids at all the schools..Go Titans!!

  10. Union Supporter on September 25th, 2010 8:50 am

titan fan, just having some fun. In fact, I speculated as to the same reason that you stated for the two teams not playing. Last year was kind of scary. Some punk kids who had graduated from Camas were roaming the Union side when Camas was up big just trying to stir up trouble. And if the rolls had been reversed, I am sure Union grads would have done the same. Better off to let it rest a while.

  11. Union dad on September 25th, 2010 9:11 am

So what I am hearing is because of a couple of kids, one of the best rivalries (although new) was cancelled, I don’t buy it.
The game could happen, didn’t mt view have a fund raiser after the season?
Admit it, big egos got in the way, to bad for the football community had to suffer.

  12. titan fan on September 25th, 2010 9:30 am

You dont have to buy it Union Dad…you’re talking about big egos..have you talked with some of the camas/union parents? Huge, huge egos. Not all, but a lot.

The rivalry will be renewed soon enough.

  13. DCGardner on September 25th, 2010 9:30 am

Apparently from an article I read in the Columbian awhile back, both Piland and Eagle were both more for going to Qwest Stadium than they were for playing each other.

I mean when you think about it it IS a once in a lifetime thing for the kids.

  14. Union dad on September 25th, 2010 9:36 am

Enough said on this, they are both good teams and hope the kids stay healthy and Clark county has deep runs into the play-offs, that makes football better for all teams.
    Go TITANS

  15. E.will 23 on September 25th, 2010 9:56 am

Union played camas at oregon state over the summer and union ran laps on camas

  16. Main on September 25th, 2010 11:03 am

    Camas was without Grindy.

  17. Evergreenfan on September 25th, 2010 11:26 am

Dude it’s obvious, Camas 69, Union 7 if they played this year.

  18. Tiannam on September 25th, 2010 11:38 am

    Great job on beating Kelso.

  19. WSUMJ on September 25th, 2010 12:21 pm

Looking at the stats..Did Kelso really have only 60 yards total offense? That Union D is filthy.

  20. Hydro on September 25th, 2010 1:02 pm

    WSUMJ,

No, 24 yards total offense, minus 3 in the second half. Makes you wonder doesn’t it? The schedule between now and Skyview isn’t looking good for the opponents.

  21. K-nute on September 25th, 2010 1:15 pm

Nearly mistake free play on both sides of the ball. Great coverage on special teams. Defense gets game ball for imposing their will all night long. Still stuff to work on – punt return, for one and maybe more of an effort to get some other weapons more involved.

DC Gardner is correct, it has nothing to do with the rivalry becoming ‘too heated’ thats really very silly if you believe that. That game brings in a ton of revenue, compared to other friday night football games. The game will not be played because it couldn’t get scheduled due to the games @ Qwest. Piland has addressed this, and that is that.

Just gonna have to benchmark common opponents. & play the stat game. 24 yds. total offense is Camas’s number to beat when they play Kelso, good luck with that.

  22. Hydro on September 25th, 2010 1:57 pm

24 yards equals 2 and a half first downs—awe, that’s just nuts! MV?

  23. Camtown on September 25th, 2010 2:48 pm

Well then K-nute, Union has to hold Skyview to under 1 touchdown. Good luck with that.

  24. DCGardner on September 25th, 2010 3:08 pm

Ok, but none of those TD’s can be scored by E.Henderson.

  25. Hydro on September 25th, 2010 3:25 pm

DC, Knute, K-nute, Union mom, Union dad, Union Cousin, 55+, Titan fan—blablabla:

Just show up every Friday night at Mckenzie 8:00 and watch the “show” from now on. There is only one team that ends up in the dome lately and you all know who it is. QUIT playing with these people! DAMMM both Camas and Skyview are good but it is what it is!

  26. wsumj on September 25th, 2010 3:35 pm

Ok… maybe the box score is incorrect… But I see this:

    Rushing — Kelso — Jared O’Neil 11-34, Riley Miller 4-23;
    Passing — Kelso — Makaio Mobbs 3-10-2-(-3)

Doing the math (yeah, i know… i was told there’d be no math either),
Kelso had 57 yards rushing and negatvie 3 yards passing.

That equals 54 yards total offense.

  27. Bryan Levesque on September 25th, 2010 3:37 pm

those are just the leaders, not all

  28. wsumj on September 25th, 2010 3:56 pm

Thanks for the clarification, Bryan. At any rate… Union dominated both sides of the ball.

  29. Hydro on September 25th, 2010 4:04 pm

    WSUMJ,

If Jimmie rushes a nice play for 10 yards and then Johnie gets sacked for minus 13 yards on the next play, it is a total for the night of minus 3 yards for the offense.

Go COUGS! I mean Dogs! I am so sick of LOCKER not showing up, it’s making me sick!

  30. Bryan Levesque on September 25th, 2010 4:56 pm

    Mobbs was sacked… a lot

  31. Evergreenfan on September 25th, 2010 5:01 pm

I was there and Kelso was good. They just did not show up….

  32. Evergreenfan on September 25th, 2010 5:06 pm

Okay in all seriousness, #90 for Kelso was all over the place. he made all their big plays on defense. If kelso had 5 of him on defense, they would be like Union. But they don’t. If you wanna be big time, ah, you don’t live in Kelso. Maybe Kalama, but not Kelso. BIG TIME.

  33. wsumj on September 25th, 2010 6:33 pm

    Thanks Hydro!

I didnt notice that the box score said LEADERS.

    The Columbian reports this:

“The Titans defense held Kelso to 22 yards of offense and four first downs, intercepted two passes, and recorded a safety when a snap on a punt attempt sailed through the end zone.”

When I add those numbers up? I get TOTAL DEFENSIVE DOMINATION.

    And Mobbs is decent QB.

  34. 55+ on September 25th, 2010 6:34 pm

    Hey Hydro,

I do show up and watch Union. I did not go Union, my kids do not go there, my wife does not teach there, and I do not live near there but I know who the best team in SW Washington is and that is why I would not waste my time to go out of the county to some place called Camas to watch a football game. Why would I not want to watch the best in the area? Real football fans know who is the best in the GSHL. Camas and Skyview are only wannabees.

  35. Kelso on September 25th, 2010 6:35 pm

Evergreenfan, curious about your last sentence. You must not be very old for you make a comment like that. If you knew any history of Kelso football, that comment would have been said.

Kelso didn’t play well, but Union is the superior team this year. I was hoping it would have been close, but I knew this outcome may have been a possibility. We’ll have to improve a great deal in order to be GSHL 3A champs.

For those trying to convince everyone that either Camas or Union is better, lets just hope that both represent well at the State level. They are in difference classifications. Both can bring positive publicity to SW WA.

  36. CHSbleachercreature on September 25th, 2010 6:41 pm

55+ you can say what you want but dont worry your presence wont be missed. The other 3000 fans can take your place :)

  37. WSUMJ on September 25th, 2010 7:32 pm

I agree, Kelso. The Hilanders have great football tradition. Ed Laulainen is one of the most successful football coaches in Washington history.

  38. Scotty Pride on September 25th, 2010 8:05 pm

Wow. Thought this was a decent site away from all the bs. Union is a legit state contender. Have no idea why they aren’t rated. I go on record saying they will make the semi finals. Camas is good and will make it to the final eight, however, they couldn’t carry Union’s gear this year.

  39. Evergreenfan on September 25th, 2010 9:38 pm

I was kidding about Kelso. Sort of. It was more a joke towards my friend. Kelso was awesome back when I went to Evergreen in the mid to late 90′s. But times have changed for both Kelso and Evergreen.

  40. MeanMachineBleacherCreature on September 26th, 2010 9:43 am

55+, you obviously dont get out very often. Go out of the county to see Camas? Camas is in Clark County. And the high school is about 5 minutes away from Union High. Dont try and make it seem like were all hillbillies that live out in the sticks. Were much closer to your beloved adopted Titans than youd think.

  41. greater saint on September 27th, 2010 12:08 am

55+ sounds like ur a ban wagon fan ur the only wannabee

  42. jt on September 27th, 2010 10:27 am

WOW alot of talk for alot of choking playoff teams camas no , union no , skyview no,kelso no who was state champs in 04 oh yeah evergreen …… talk all you want and get all the booster money you want you still dont have the big trophy fellas but you can stop by and see one at evergreen …….. lol stop talkin til you can back it all teams ……. Its simple your teams are good but they have yet to bring home to clark county the big one , proved it again this year already just ask union when they went to seattle oops or did we forget that one … on any friday the biggest dog can get bit watch and see………

  43. jt on September 27th, 2010 10:28 am

oh yeah camas would smoke union

  44. green fever on September 27th, 2010 9:45 pm

stop arguing over who would win because you dont play this year. it will never be settled. also union has only been open a few years this is not some huge long standing rivalry that is getting too heated. they just didn’t schedule eachother because it isn’t an important game. union should focus on their league game instead of the what if camas game. in my opinion union is lucky they dont play camas this year because they would get smacked. camas is top notch this year

  45. Camtown on September 27th, 2010 11:19 pm

jt did you forget that the man who built Evergreen’s football dynasty is now continuing Camas’? And by the way Kelso won the state championship 21 years before Evergreen did.

But yes, Camas would smoke Union.

  46. CHSbleachercreature on September 27th, 2010 11:32 pm

Jt. Why do you use the arguement of winning state to make them seem like they are a top competitor…. Every player from that team has graduated. Its like saying washington state is a good program because of their early 2000s success… I will use your own words to prove you wrong…”stop talkin til you can back it up”…

  47. greater saint on September 27th, 2010 11:34 pm

did kelso win the state title??? i thought evergreen was the only team ti win the title from the GsHL…. bryan??? do u know???

  48. Touchet on September 27th, 2010 11:58 pm

I beleive Evergreen was the first from Clark County, Kelso won 3A Title in 1983 info is on the http://www.wiaa.com site

  49. greater saint on September 28th, 2010 12:13 am

so gshl has kelso and evergreen would be awesome to add two more this season camas and union/skyview… could u imagine if camas won 3A and union won 4A if that happened camas and union should play a little scrimmage game??? eh??

  50. Bryan Levesque on September 28th, 2010 1:19 am

Kelso did win the AAA state title in 1983, Also Ridgefield won the A title in 1995. Evergreen won the 4A in 2004. We don’t hear about the Kelso one and Ridgefield ones much, because the paper in town could care less about Kelso (not in coverage area) and Ridgefield is not a “big school” Evergreen was the first “big school” i guess AA/AAA or 3A/4A team from Clark County to win a football state title. Kelso was the first GSHL school, Ridgefield was the first Clark County school, Evergreen was the first GSHL school from Clark County to win a title.
